This book is about igniting the changemaker in each of us, to help change the world for the better. You do not need to be superhuman to be a changemaker. You do, however, need to find your cause and then find creative ways, visions and solutions to shape that and make a difference. And if your creative vision is strong enough, it will attract others to join your cause, thus creating what the author describes as a “creative change cycle” that others resonate with and want to be a part of. Presented as six key concepts framed by parables, which is further divided into 80 threads consisting of short stories and evidence-based and personal reflections, the book seeks to demystify the concept and practice of changemaking. It also features lessons from over 28 changemakers across diverse fields such as the arts, business, politics, religion and technology, as well as historical lessons learned through movements from East to West spanning five millennia.
Creative Change Leadership

Creative Change Leadership

We are living in a uniquely disruptive age, one that demands a fundamental reassessment of leadership. The rapid advancement of artificial intelligence (AI) and robotics is redefining the very essence of human purpose. Simultaneously, the established global order is dissolving, with the world increasingly divided into competing spheres of influence. In this era of dismantled norms and emerging structures, shaped by both human and artificial intelligence, a complex present foreshadows an even more challenging future. To navigate the complexities of AI, global conflict, and economic disparity, a holistic leadership model is required, one that must prioritize not only organizational efficiency but also the well-being of humanity and the planet. This book outlines the characteristics and new competencies for leaders to be able to navigate in today’s world, and lead creative and lasting change. Most leadership models are about doing things (crafting a vision, communicating, directing and achieving outcomes). But those models were developed for more stable times. The world is different now, and a new, holistic leadership model is needed to set creative leaders apart, which is not just about doing, but also about being. It’s about who the leader is as a person and how he/she shows up; how and why people are motivated to follow this leader, to be engaged in the vision, and to trust that what they are being led to is good.

In Translation Changes Everything leading theorist Lawrence Venuti gathers fourteen of his incisive essays since 2000. The selection sketches the trajectory of his thinking about translation while engaging with the main trends in research and commentary. The issues covered include basic concepts like equivalence, retranslation, and reader reception; sociological topics like the impact of translations in the academy and the global cultural economy; and philosophical problems such as the translator’s unconscious and translation ethics.Every essay presents case studies that include Venuti’s own translation projects, illuminating the connections between theoretical concepts and verbal choices. The texts, drawn from a broad variety of languages, are both humanistic and pragmatic, encompassing such forms as poems and novels, religious and philosophical works, travel guidebooks and advertisements. The discussions all explore practical applications, whether writing, publishing, reviewing, teaching or studying translations.Venuti’s aim is to conceive of translation as an interpretive act with far-reaching social effects, at once enabled and constrained by specific cultural situations. This latest chapter in his developing work is essential reading for translators and students of translation alike.

"The design and use of federal grants-in-aid to state and local governments have posed policy choices for every presidential administration since that of Lyndon B. Johnson. The papers in this volume describe the decisions these administrations have made, analyze why only some of these choices prevailed politically, and explain how large amounts of federal aid have affected local governments. These studies mark the final chapter in a major research effort carried out by the Brookings Governmental Studies program to evaluate the effects of general revenue sharing and other broad-based forms of aid that were introduced in the early 1970s.Kenneth T. Palmer traces the major steps in the evolution of grants-in-aid since the Johnson administration. Lawrence D. Brown's essay on the politics of devolution examines the successes and failures of innovative grant policies such as revenue sharing and block grants. James W. Fossett, writing on the politics of dependence, analyzes the effect of the massive expansion of federal grants to the large cities in the 1970s."

The Jewish community in America is currently undergoing profound changes, and American Jews are experiencing personal and communal realities that differ markedly from those of their parents and grandparents. To meet the needs of this population, a complex human service delivery system has evolved, with a vast array of agencies and organizations providing health care, housing, nutrition programs, counseling, child care, Jewish education, and many other services. In this work, the editors have brought together a collection of essays that explore the nature of these services, the profound implication they are having for the Jewish community, and the planning issues that confront today's American Jews. The editors have divided the essays into three subject groups, all of which explore the numerous issues crucial to understanding the nature of planning in contemporary Jewish communities. The first section examines transformations in the behavior of American Jews and Jewish identity, covering such topics as education and careers, ethnic clustering, and Jewish fundraising. Section two explores issues involved in providing services to specific populations, including social, educational, and recreational services for singles, families, and children. The final section addresses the planning strategies necessary to meet the changing needs of the community. The four essays here focus on understanding the planning paradigms and realities in the Jewish community, and the roles professionals play in implementing change. This work will be an important resource for students of sociology and Jewish studies, and a valuable addition to most library collections.

Praise for Lawrence Joseph:"Poetry of great dignity, grace, and unrelenting persuasiveness… Joseph gives us new hope for the resourcefulness of humanity, and of poetry." ---John Ashbery"Like Henry Adams, Joseph seems to be writing ahead of actual events, and that makes him one of the scariest writers I know." ---David Kirby, The New York Times Book Review"The most important lawyer-poet of our era." ---David Skeel, Legal Affairs A volume in the Poets on Poetry series, which collects critical works by contemporary poets, gathering together the articles, interviews, and book reviews by which they have articulated the poetics of a new generation.Essays on poetry by the most important poet-lawyer of our eraThe Game Changed: Essays and Other Prose presents works by prominent poet and lawyer Lawrence Joseph that focus on poetry and poetics, and on what it is to be a poet. Joseph takes the reader through the aesthetics of modernism and postmodernism, a lineage that includes Wallace Stevens, William Carlos Williams, and Gertrude Stein, switching critical tracks to major European poets like Eugenio Montale and Hans Magnus Enzensberger, and back to American masters like James Schuyler and Adrienne Rich. Always discerning, especially on issues of identity, form, and the pressures of history and politics, Joseph places his own poetry within its critical contexts, presenting narratives of his life in Detroit, where he grew up, and in Manhattan, where he has lived for 30 years. These pieces also portray Joseph’s Lebanese, Syrian, and Catholic heritages, and his life as a lawyer, distinguished law professor, and legal scholar.

This thoughtful book examines the continuing controversy surrounding climate change and the political implications of the Green New Deal recently introduced in Congress. The author feels the legislation will destroy the American economy and lead the United States down the road to socialism. In addition to presenting many facts attacking the "man-made" global warming assumptions of some climatologists, the author has gathered relevant quotes from many sources supporting his stand that any global warming occurring is due to changes in the sun's radiation, which should be adapted to, and not be fought by expensive programs that will prove unsuccessful.
Changing the Narrative

Changing the Narrative

Narratives provide the storylines of conflict and in doing so become an arena of conflict themselves. When states mount information campaigns against each other, they are trying to change the narrative. The digital platforms of the new information environment have been identified by various analysts as a significant factor in contemporary strategy and crisis management. But while social media is noisier and more chaotic than traditional media, and unprecedented in its immediacy and accessibility, has it thus far been a game changer in strategic affairs? In this Adelphi book, Sir Lawrence Freedman and Heather Williams examine the impact of state-led digital information – or disinformation – campaigns in four contexts: the India–Pakistan crisis over Kashmir in 2019; the heightened tensions between the United States and Iran following the assassination of Qasem Soleimani in 2020; China’s messaging in response to the COVID-19 pandemic from 2020–22; and the Russia–Ukraine crisis from 2013–23. While noting the meaningful consequences of digital information campaigns, in each case the authors call for a sense of perspective. Such campaigns are only one aspect of wider political struggles. They are also difficult for their initiators to control, and less likely to influence foreign audiences than domestic ones. Overall, the authors argue, there is little evidence so far to suggest such campaigns will have as much influence over contemporary crises as the classical instruments of military and economic power.
