Interviews with people in Lawrence and Lowell, Massachusetts (the Merrimack River Valley) who experienced the sickness and pandemic living restrictions of Covid-19 in 2020 and 2021, plus diary excerpts from residents who reported on their daily fears, hopes, and challenges. Produced by the Lawrence History Center, Phillips Academy Andover, and University of Massachusetts, Lowell (UML). This is the first published documentary about the impact of the pandemic. Interviews were conducted by Sociology students at UML, students at Phillips Academy, and community activists in Lawrence. The two working-class, highly diverse cities in eastern Massachusetts had sustained high level rates of infection with the related disruption of employment, education, and normal community life. The interviews offer a useful case study of the effects of Covid in one region.
The Biography of Percival Lowell is a comprehensive account of the life and work of Percival Lowell, an American astronomer who is best known for his studies of the solar system and his controversial theories about the existence of intelligent life on Mars. Written by Abbott Lawrence Lowell, Percival's brother and a prominent lawyer and educator, this book draws on a wealth of primary sources, including letters, diaries, and personal papers, to provide a detailed and nuanced portrait of Percival's personality, interests, and achievements. The book begins by tracing Percival's early life and education, including his studies at Harvard University and his travels to Europe and Asia. It then explores his career as an astronomer, which began in earnest in the late 1880s when he established the Lowell Observatory in Flagstaff, Arizona. Percival's work at the observatory focused primarily on the study of Mars, and he became convinced that the planet was home to a network of canals that were evidence of an intelligent civilization. The book delves into the controversy that surrounded Percival's theories about Mars, which were met with skepticism by many of his peers in the scientific community. It also explores his other astronomical work, including his studies of the planet Pluto, which he predicted would exist long before it was discovered.Beyond his scientific pursuits, the book also examines Percival's personal life, including his marriage to Constance Savage and his relationships with his siblings and other family members. It also touches on his broader interests, such as his fascination with Japanese culture and his advocacy for the construction of a transcontinental railroad.Overall, The Biography of Percival Lowell offers a fascinating and in-depth look at the life of one of America's most influential astronomers, shedding light on his achievements, his controversies, and his enduring legacy. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
