A New York Times bestseller A 2015 William C. Morris YA Debut Award Finalist Magical realism, lyrical prose, and the pain and passion of human love haunt this hypnotic generational saga. Foolish love appears to be the Roux family birthright, an ominous forecast for its most recent progeny, Ava Lavender. Ava -- in all other ways a normal girl -- is born with the wings of a bird. In a quest to understand her peculiar disposition and a growing desire to fit in with her peers, sixteen-year old Ava ventures into the wider world, ill-prepared for what she might discover and naive to the twisted motives of others. Others like the pious Nathaniel Sorrows, who mistakes Ava for an angel and whose obsession with her grows until the night of the summer solstice celebration. That night, the skies open up, rain and feathers fill the air, and Ava's quest and her family's saga build to a devastating crescendo. First-time author Leslye Walton has constructed a layered and unforgettable mythology of what it means to be born with hearts that are tragically, exquisitely human.

"An atmospheric, blood-drenched dark fantasy for a cold and stormy night." Kirkus ReviewsFrom the author of The Strange and Beautiful Sorrows of Ava Lavender comes a haunting tale of magic and murder. When Rona Blackburn landed on Anathema Island more than a century ago, her otherworldly skills might have benefited friendlier neighbors. Instead, guilt and fear led the island’s original eight settlers to burn “the witch” out of her home. So Rona invoked the privileges of a witch; she cursed them. But such a spell always comes with a terrible price, and in punishing the island's residents, Rona also bound her family ever tighter to them. Fast-forward to the present day and all Nor Blackburn wants is to live an unremarkable teenage life. And she has reason to hope that she may have escaped the thorny side-effects of the family matriach's curse. But then a mysterious book comes out, promising to cast any spell for the right price. The author – Nor’s own mother – seems capable of performing magic that should be far beyond her capabilities. And such magic always requires a sacrifice.A storm is coming. It's coming for Nor.

This book seeks to navigate between the optimism that has arisen from the promise of the potential of machine learning (ML) in healthcare, and the lack of clarity about what realistic risks and benefits we can foresee. Its main aim is to develop a relational, rights-based normative approach to evaluating the distribution of burdens and benefits of implementing ML in medical diagnosis. This framework, called the "Ecosystem of Moral Constellations", assumes that every person has an equal claim to the fundamental rights necessary to lead one’s life, but recognizes that there may be conflicting interests that risk violating or infringing the rights of an individual or individuals, and that therefore an assessment of these tensions requires a situational prioritization of certain rights over others. This framework proposes to consider the normative relevance of relationships at different points of moral engagement to assess the potential tensions between these burdens and benefits of these technologies. The author argues that decisions about the implementation of AI systems require more than an assessment of technical feasibility. Instead, it is imperative to consider the different normative goals and interests of the actors involved, the material capabilities of the tools, and the role they should play in the clinical workflow.
This is a chronicle of a three-and-a-half year journey with cancer. It is joy and gratitude filled and describes one person's dance with trust and love and doubt and resistance. It is a journey toward acceptance, letting go and a realization of impermanence. Inspiring, joy-filled and bitttersweet, this book offers much to the reader.
"You are Black; you are female," Leslie Jones' father once said. "But if you work harder and you're better than everybody else, they can't f*cking deny you." Leslie Jones is a warrior. Raised by a tough dad and a loving but often sick mom, her father's military career meant she bounced around as a kid–fighting off bullies because she was tall and loud, sticking up for her troubled kid brother, and generally causing mayhem wherever she went. In the end the family settled in Lynwood, Los Angeles, where in high school she was a star basketball player, heavily recruited for what everyone thought would be a stellar college career. Then, one day in college, she discovered comedy instead, and everything changed. Eventually hitting the road as a working comedian, and holding down regular jobs to fund her dreams, she found herself fighting prejudice, tough crowds, stupid bosses, and people who thought a Black woman could never be funny enough. But she proved herself time and again to be undeniably funnier than most, and in Leslie F*cking Jones, we finally get to meet the woman behind the laughs: tough but full of love, uncompromising but wise, honest, revealing, challenging, and always completely hilarious. From clubs across the country, through hit TV specials, to six years at SNL; through the hell that was the Ghostbusters remake, and on into Twitter and Olympic-commentary stardom, guest hosting Ellen and The Daily Show, and beyond, Leslie F*cking Jones reveals what it took to become one of America's most beloved and plain-speaking superstars. In this audacious memoir, Leslie Jones opens up for the first time about how she faltered and triumphed on the road to success and, in doing so, encourages others to let go of the fear and self-doubt that has holds them back. Leslie F*cking Jones is a love letter to regular people just trying to make it day to day.
