Every recorded performance of Mahler shymphonies--and Das Lied--from 1924 until press time! What a labor and how sorely needed! Music Journal In the past 25 years a revival of interest in the music of Gustav Mahler has resulted in nearly 300 new recordings of his symphonies. The breadth and complexity of these works, together with the plethora of recent releases, signals the need for a guide that will be useful both to novice and the experienced collector. Lewis M. Smoley's book fills this need, providing critical analysis and specific recording information for all known recordings of Mahler's symphonies as well as indexes by conductor, orchestra, and label. The result of extensive research, this volume includes many recordings that have not appeared in previous listings. Recording made around the world from 1924 through 1986 are treated in chapters devoted to each of the 11 symphonies--including Das Lied von der Erde and the unfinished 10th. Listings are arranged alphabetically under the name of the conductor and analyzed in terms of quality of performance, specific interpretation and interpretive styles, and sonics. Recordings of special merit are noted. Entries supply information about reissues as well as original pressings, type of recording, and alternative versions of some of the scores. Cross-referenced indexes list conductor, orchestra, vocal soloists, chorus, and record label for the recordings discussed. The foreword and preface place Mahler's recorded symphonies in perspective and discuss some of the interpretive and textual issues that continue to be debated. This single-volume guide is appropriate for both the average listener and the serious enthusiast, and will also be a valuable addition to the collections of music schools and conservatories.

The popularity of Mahler's symphonic works is unremitting. More recordings have been made during the past ten years than in the previous six decades. This work is a companion to the first volume, published in 1986; together, the two review virtually every recording commercially released (as well as some private issues). The intention of both works is to provide a comprehensive analysis of all recordings. A general overview is combined with details of particular importance. Recordings of special merit are noted. The objective critical discussions will appeal to the newcomer as well as the knowledgeable devotee and the work will serve as a valuable addition to university, music school, and public libraries, as well as any music lover's library. This guide provides a symphony-by-symphony commentary, including the unfinished Tenth Symphony, Das Lied von der Erde, and piano and chamber music reductions of the works. It includes all new recordings issued worldwide as well as compact disc reissues of previously released recordings and all performances on videocassette. Listings are arranged alphabetically by conductor, and headings for each recording contain specific information about the performers, record label, catalog number, and timing. Helpful indexes by conductor, orchestra, vocal and instrumental soloists, chorus, and record label are included.

In A Lay Preacher's Guide: How to Craft a Faithful Sermon, Karoline M. Lewis provides lay preachers with an essential and accessible guide to the basics of Sunday morning preaching.Laypeople are increasingly called to serve congregations and are preaching regularly. But often they do not have immediate, reliable, or trusted access to homiletical instruction or support for their preaching. As a result, these church leaders--feeling called to ministry and to preach, and affirmed by denominational leaders to do so--are left on their own to figure out how to preach. In A Lay Preacher's Guide, Lewis gives this unique subset of preachers the foundations of biblical preaching, so they can preach faithfully in their unique contexts. She lays out in a concise and clear format the steps to preaching a faithful sermon, a process that can be immediately applied to weekly sermon preparation. This book is a go-to resource for lay preachers, providing a basic course for faithful preaching.

Lewis Branscomb and Philip Auerswald address early-stage, high-tech innovation in the context of business decision making and innovation policy. How do technology innovators, business executives, and venture capitalists manage the technical elements of business risk when developing and launching new products? Overcoming technical risks requires crossing the so-called valley of death-the gap between demonstrating the soundness of a technical concept in a controlled setting and readying the product technology for the market. Crossing the valley of death may mean bringing university-based research to the point where it appears viable to venture capitalists, or bridging the cultural gap between technical innovators and the managers who are being asked to risk their institutional resources. In every context, purely technical risks are coupled with the market risks inherent in innovation. In this book Lewis Branscomb and Philip Auerswald address early-stage, high-tech innovation in the context of business decision making and innovation policy. The topics addressed include the extent to which purely technical risk is separable from market risk; how industrial managers make decisions on funding early-stage, high-risk technology projects; and under what circumstances government can and should act to reduce the technical risks of innovative projects so that firms will invest in them. The book includes contributions by Mary Good, George Hartmann, James McGroddy, Mike Myers, Michael Roberts, and F. M. Scherer.

Can Korea realize its dream of matching the economic performance of the G-7 nations in the next 15 years? The marshalling of capital, and dedicated, low-cost labor by authoritarian governments in the past created double-digit economic growth based on imported technology. How can Korea's young democracy, fledgling science, and liberalizing policies compete against a new level of global competition? Korea must build its research capability, accelerate the development of smaller, high-tech firms, and reduce bureaucratic conflict in support of an innovation-based strategy. This book puts Korea's technological challenge in its historical context, documents the reasons past strategies are no longer viable, and presents a blueprint for the next stage in Korean development. Korean economy is one of the most exciting and dynamic ones in the world. Korea finds itself in the position of being regarded as respected competition by nations and firms which earlier regarded it only as a source of low-cost, high-quality production. As the economy has slowed, the Korean government and private sector have faced the challenge of making a change in strategy in regard to its approach to technology, and how the economy is to be managed. This analysis of where Korea has been and how it will deal with technology and economic management is conducted by prominent Korean and American scholars.

The study of terrorism has now "arrived" internationally, as evidenced by the birth of a new international multidisciplinary journal, Terrorism; the proliferation of scientific conferences and papers; and the growth of university research and teaching on the subject. Historians, social scientists, lawyers, criminologists, administrators, and political leaders are showing an increasing awareness of the need for more informed scholarly analysis of the growing international incidence of acts of terrorism perpetrated by extremist groups of almost every ideological hue and in every continent.

A major update of solar cell technology and the solar marketplace Since the first publication of this important volume over a decade ago, dramatic changes have taken place with the solar market growing almost 100-fold and the U.S. moving from first to fourth place in the world market as analyzed in this Second Edition. Three bold new opportunities are identified for any countries wanting to improve market position. The first is combining pin solar cells with 3X concentration to achieve economic competitiveness near term. The second is charging battery-powered cars with solar cell?generated electricity from arrays in surrounding areas?including the car owners' homes?while simultaneously reducing their home electricity bills by over ninety percent. The third is formation of economic "unions" of sufficient combined economic size to be major competitors. In this updated edition, feed-in tariffs are identified as the most effective approach for public policy. Reasons are provided to explain why pin solar cells outperform more traditional pn solar cells. Field test data are reported for nineteen percent pin solar cells and for ~500X concentrating systems with bare cell efficiencies approaching forty percent. Paths to bare cell efficiencies over fifty percent are described, and key missing program elements are identified. Since government support is needed for new technology prototype integration and qualification testing before manufacturing scale up, the key economic measure is identified in this volume as the electricity cost in cents per kilowatt-hour at the complete installed system level, rather than just the up-front solar cell modules' costs in dollars per watt. This Second Edition will benefit technologists in the fields of solar cells and systems; solar cell researchers; power systems designers; academics studying microelectronics, semiconductors, and solar cells; business students and investors with a technical focus; and government and political officials developing public policy.
The Mystery of Music: An Exploration Centered on the Lives of Thirty Ancient Musicians
This book demonstrates that music serves the same societal functions at present as it has throughout human history. It is the first time that such a conclusion has been based on firm historical evidence. The text is built around brief biographies, or 'profiles, ' of thirty musicians from the distant past. These men and women lived between approximately 2500 BCE and 1500 CE at locations that span half the globe. They came from a variety of social classes and carried out social, political, religious, entertainment, and other functions in society. Musical activities in the past are shown to resemble those of the present: The Mesopotamian princess Enheduanna composed hymns to her gods. The Greek composer Pindar sold songs about athletes. The Roman emperor Nero got an ego boost by singing on stage. The Arabian songstress Jamila performed erotic music for her ecstatic fans. The European troubadour Marcabru used music to criticize upper-class immorality. The blind Japanese lutenist Akashi no Kakuichi composed a massive and influential musical war epic. On the basis of musicological studies from the 19th and 20th centuries, the respected social scientist Alan Merriam formulated a list of ten functions of music. All these ten functions have now also been identified in the present study of ancient musicians. This indicates that musicians' functions in society have remained much the same through a wide range of historical changes. This evidence of constancy through different historical stages adds support to the view that human musicality is a genetically determined trait, rather than a characteristic that is acquired from the individual's cultural context. The text also reviews and comments on evolutionary theories concerning the acquisition of musicality. 'Musical entrainment, ' which has recently received a great deal of attention from evolutionary scientists, is singled out for special attention. Examples taken from the profiles and elsewhere help to clarify this rather obscure concept. The book is introduced by an historical overview of the ideas expressed by philosophers, scientists, and others about music. Appendices to the text establish the relation of this study to traditional ethnomusicology and describe the anthropological framework that has been employed. More than 400 bibliographic references and a detailed index complete the presentation.

Richard Lambert ... the former FBI lead investigator on the anthrax investigation, says the bureau has tried "to railroad the prosecution of Ivins" and that "a staggering amount of exculpatory evidence" regarding Dr. Ivins remains secret. Congressman Rush Holt ... There were no fingerprints, no witness accounts, no physical evidence linking Ivins to the incident. We need a blue-ribbon commission to review the anthrax attack and the FBI's flawed investigation. Senator Patrick Leahy (one of the two Senate targets of the attack) ... does not believe the FBI's case against Ivins. Senator Chuck Grassley ... "There are no more excuses for avoiding an independent review and assessment of how the FBI handled its investigation in the anthrax case. Senator Arlen Specter ... the FBI they could never have obtained a conviction against Ivins in court based on the case they have made public. Does fiction sometimes foretell reality? It certainly seems that way in Lewis M. Weinstein's fictionalized story of an anthrax scare ... a thriller that seems to track closely with real-life events, even as they unfold today. This updated edition of Case Closed follows Weinstein's passion for seeing the truth come out in the FBI's handling of the Amerithrax Case.
Defense Relations Between the United States and Vietnam
Although the hostilities of the Vietnam War ended in 1975, the diplomatic repercussions lasted for several more decades. Eventually, however, the dedicated perseverance of diplomats on both sides paid off. In November 2003, Major General Pham Van Tra, defense minister of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam, met with U.S. defense secretary Donald Rumsfeld in the halls of the Pentagon, signaling a new era in U.S.-Vietnamese defense relations. This book traces the development of that relationship in the years since the Vietnam War. It focuses especially on the 1990s, a decade in which the author served as country director for Indochina, Thailand and Burma in the Office of the Assistant U.S. Secretary of Defense for International Security Affairs. His experience adds a personal perspective to the historical and political record. Multiple facets of the relationship between the two countries are addressed, including trade, immigration of Amerasian children, and POW-MIA concerns. Through this honest depiction of the sometimes fractious and confusing policy-making process, Stern shows how both parties came to agree, in the words of Major General Tra, that we "should not allow the future to repeat the past."

Despite their insistence that the complete withdrawal of U.S. troops was the condition for the release of prisoners of war, the Democratic Republic of Vietnam took little action to account for American POWs at the end of the Vietnam War. Almost two decades would pass following the end of the war before significant internal political changes, shifting regional alignments, changing Western interests, Sino-Soviet rapprochement, a nonmilitary settlement of the Cambodian conflict, and the collapse of the Soviet Union would bring Hanoi to the point of recognizing the importance of mending its relationship with the West. From the Paris peace talks to the U.S. government's decision in 1994 to lift the trade embargo against Vietnam, Hanoi's policy on American MIAs and POWs is examined, with particular focus on the influence of individual decision-makers on the process and the ways the Vietnamese leadership arrived at their negotiating strategies.
