Coercive Power in Social Exchange

Coercive Power in Social Exchange

Linda D. Molm

Cambridge University Press
1997
pokkari
This book describes the progression and results of a decade-long program of experimental research on power in social exchange relations. Exchange theorists have traditionally excluded punishment and coercion from the scope of their analyses; but Molm examines whether exchange theory can be expanded to include reward and coercive power. Working within the framework of Emerson's power-dependence theory, but also drawing on the decision theory concepts of strategic action and loss aversion, Molm develops and tests a theory that emphasizes the interdependence of reward and coercive power. Her work shows that they are fundamentally different, not only in their effects on behavior, but also in the structural incentive to use power and the risks of power use. When exchanges are negotiated and secured by the 'shadow of the future,' rather than by binding agreements, dependence both encourages and constrains the use of coercion.

The Library Book Cart Precision Drill Team Manual

Public stunts and all-for-fun, utterly nonpoliticized publicity bashes can be a great way to promote a library to a community, get people to see the library in a different light and become interested and involved, and finally reach those who think that libraries are boring or stuffy places. This light-hearted but precise manual provides step-by-step instructions on how to plan, equip and train a successful book cart drill team. It includes tips for recruiting members and making the experience gratifying, finding festive opportunities to perform, costuming, decorating the carts--and especially, clear choreographic drawings for imaginative, attention-getting routines. And by the way: grocery stores, retailers, rental outfits and others could easily adapt the ideas in this book. It doesn't have to be library book carts, it can be grocery carts, baby strollers, and lawn mowers--anything you can push down the street.

Otavalan Women, Ethnicity, and Globalization

Otavalan Women, Ethnicity, and Globalization

Linda D'Amico

University of New Mexico Press
2011
sidottu
While doing fieldwork in Peguche, Ecuador, Linda D'Amico found herself working with and befriending Rosa Lema, a woman who had previously worked with anthropologist Elsie Clews Parsons. One of the founding mothers of anthropology, Parsons's 1940 fieldwork in Peguche laid foundations for the development of feminist anthropology and ethnic studies. Lema, while unknown to most Americans, is an indigenous woman whose efforts to bring changes to her village and her country--most notably as ambassador for Galo Plaza's government's Cultural Mission to promote economic integration--afford a unique view of the rise of interculturalism as an indigenous ideology.Gender is at the center of D'Amico's analysis as she looks beyond the overlapping lives of these two women, both innovators and adept at crossing cultural boundaries, to explore the interrelationship between gender, ethnicity, and globalization.
Standing Against The Rage: Based on the true story of Mildred Flatau's miraculous escape from domestic violence
The innocence of small town life in Sandy, Oregon was shattered in the spring of 1933. The entire neighborhood of Sandy Ridge on the outer edge of the town was terrified as the sounds of gun shots and a thunderous explosion of fire rocked the morning hours of March, 17. Neighbors knew Edward Flatau to be a cantankerous, envious and mean-spirited man, but no one imagined he was capable of such horrors. That Mildred, his teen age daughter, was able to stand up to him and live was the talk of the small town for decades. Based on newspaper accounts and historical records, including court documents, family stories and letters, Standing Against the Rage is Mildred's story. Author Linda D'Ae-Smith uses Mildred's own diary written during the car trip from Sandy, Oregon to a new life with relatives in Detroit, Michigan to not only tell the tragic events of March 17, but reveals how Mildred's faith was pivotal in her surviving unspeakable carnage and loss. Her strength in the midst of horrific tragedy is, on the surface, inexplicable. What causes a young teen to stand up against the rage of a man seeking vengeance upon perceived injustice? Driven to find the answer, D'Ae-Smith set out on a remarkable journey to uncover Mildred's story.
