The Art of Midlife

The Art of Midlife

Linda N. Edelstein

The subject of midlife has been dominated by the woes of aging—menopause, divorce, hormone replacement therapies, aging parents, and fleeing children. Now a broad-ranging new work by clinical psychologist Linda N. Edelstein, Ph.D., The Art of Midlife, describes the freedom and authenticity that can be made a cornerstone of the middle years. She describes three healthy and predictable phases. First, women relinquish old ways, untying themselves from the past and mourning the losses of youth and its illusions. By placing less emphasis on the needs of others, women can live more creatively and enjoy the present. The women Dr. Edelstein studied have been able to move to the next step, in which they reconnect to themselves. They regain their authentic voices, simplify life, and allow long buried aspects of themselves to emerge. Finally, women refocus their futures. With courage, they embrace new people, ideas, activities, and work—and pursue adult dreams regardless of external rewards.

The must-have guide to honestly and sensitively answering your clients' questions Written to help therapists view their clients' questions as collaborative elements of clinical work, What Do I Say? explores the questions?some direct, others unspoken?that all therapists, at one time or another, will encounter from clients. Authors and practicing therapists Linda Edelstein and Charles Waehler take a thought-provoking look at how answers to clients' questions shape a therapeutic climate of expression that encourages personal discovery and growth. Strategically arranged in a question-and-answer format for ease of use, this hands-on guide is conversational in tone and filled with personal examples from experienced therapists on twenty-three hot-button topics, including religion, sex, money, and boundaries. What Do I Say? tackles actual client questions, such as: Can you help me? (Chapter 1, The Early Sessions) Sorry I am late. Can we have extra time? (Chapter 9, Boundaries) I don't believe in all this therapy crap. What do you think about that? (Chapter 3, Therapeutic Process) Why is change so hard? (Chapter 4, Expectations About Change) Will you attend my graduation/wedding/musical performance/speech/business grand opening? (Chapter 20, Out of the Office) Where are you going on vacation? (Chapter 10, Personal Questions) I gave your name to a friend . . . Will you see her? (Chapter 9, Boundaries) Should I pray about my problems? (Chapter 12, Religion and Spirituality) Are you like all those other liberals who believe gay people have equal rights? (Chapter 13, Prejudice) The power of therapy lies in the freedom it offers clients to discuss anything and everything. It's not surprising then, that clients will surprise therapists with their experiences and sometimes with the questions they ask. What Do I Say? reveals how these questions?no matter how difficult or uncomfortable?can be used to support the therapeutic process rather than derail the therapist?client relationship.

"A club no one wants to belong to..." is the way parents describe their new, unwanted lives after their child's death. Parents must struggle through the long days, overwhelmed and brokenhearted. In Shattered, psychologist and author Linda N. Edelstein, Ph.D., asks the question,"How do parents cope with the devastating loss of their beloved child?" Dr. E. blends intimate conversations with grieving parents, decades of clinical expertise, and results of research studies to offer parents a helping hand as they navigate their personal world of grief. Non-judgmental and encouraging, Dr. Edelstein urges parents to respect their own ways of grieving. Without presenting "cookbook" answers, the resources and perspectives she offers provide hope that, although their world has changed forever, families can look ahead to good days and meaningful lives. This book is a valuable resource for parents and the people who love them. Topics range from the shock of first hearing the news to coping strategies that grieving parents have found effective as the years pass. Chapters include: the emotions of grief, the mourning process, the impact on marital relationships, reactions of brothers and sisters, perinatal loss, complicated grief, bereavement self-help groups, what to do with the child's belongings, rituals for healing, the value and limitations of social networks, use of the internet, and helping professionals. Shattered: How Parents Cope with the Death of their Child also addresses the unique issues faced by gay and lesbian parents, military families, parents of school shooters, and celebrity families. She completes the book with two hopeful chapters about long term coping and rethinking parental bereavement.

Open Your Heart to Nature and Beyond maintains there is one problem-separation from the Divine- and one solution-applying some form of forgiveness. It details the holding relationships that actually separate us from the Divine and how to use the Law of Forgiveness to let them go and open our hearts to God's presence. Like a computer delete key, the activity of forgiveness allows us to let go physically, emotionally, and mentally until we join Universal Being. This Divine encounter is divided into 7 distinct stages with descriptions based on experiences of the author as well as poets and individuals from other major religions. This book also suggests that a religious experience is simply having an experience of the Zero Energy Field as defined in quantum physics. The Zero Energy Field is defined as the activity of subatomic particles such as photons, electrons, and other quantum particles in space at temperatures of absolute zero. Research indicates that humans can affect this field with pray which is the mental activity of calling these energy particles to organize and outpicture as manifestations in nature. We also have the ability to apply the Law of Forgiveness that Jesus introduced and release the electrons, neutrons, and protons forming something in the world and in our minds and thereby causing them to disorganize them and return to the Zero Energy Field. The human activity of forgiving or letting things, thoughts, and emotions go shows that we have the mental ability to apply the Law of Entropy and disorganized manifested things and release them back into subatomic particles in the Zero Energy Field.

Truly Feminine translates insights from Jungian psychology into Christian terms so the average woman in American culture can understand them. It distinguishes masculinity from femininity differences denied by the traditional feminist movement and points out that a woman must become aware of and deal with her inner masculine side or it will block the true expression of her femininity. Samson, David, Paul, and Jesus are used as images to symbolize the four aspects of a woman's masculine side. Truly Feminine discusses both the positive and negative sides of these four inner masculine aspects and how they can distort and disrupt the true expression of a woman's feminine nature. A number of negative feminine types are discussed including the clinging vine mother, the social climber, the judge, the boss, the door mat woman, the spinning top woman, the mermaid, the scholarly woman, the nagging wife, the patriarchal woman, the medium, and the witch woman. Biblical as well as contemporary women are used to illustrate the various negative feminine types.

This year is a year that will go down in history not only for the election that came up, but also for the worst disease to hit our planet and all the people residing on it in decades. We have all seen the posts and the pod-casts that have shown on commercials and news clips telling us to stay home when possible, and stay safe as often as we can. Who would have ever believed something like a virus that started in Asia back in January of 2020, would cripple us globally and continue to do so to this date and time. I thought a lot about this problem. I miss my family and friends. I know a lot of you have been feeling the same way about being inside for days on end. Feeling concerned about jobs, food, money, disasters from tornadoes, face masks and where to find them. And toilet paper and who has it. I decided to write down my experiences on these topics and see how many of you relate to them, and maybe even laugh about them now. So get ready cause we're going to talk about it all. The drama, the comedy, and the real reason: We're All In This Together.

Set in a fictional town, at a fictional school, Linda N. Masi’s debut novel, Fine Dreams, rewrites myth and history. Framed by a ghost’s first-person narrative, the book centers on four young friends, the stars of their school’s track team. While studying for exams, they are kidnapped and taken to a terrorist encampment. Two are claimed as “wives” by their captors, one is forced to wear a suicide vest, and each is subjected to appalling violence and terror. While their stories resonate with a widely publicized 2014 abduction, these four young women could have been taken in any of the many incidents that have plagued the Nigerian people for years. Even though they are abducted and abused by men in power and forced to survive in a dark place like Persephone, Masi’s protagonists offer new endings for Persephone’s story. In Masi’s telling, these resilient young women recover their dreams and hopes to live in daylight once again. No matter where they travel or where they stay, they gain self-determination and reclaim their dreams.

During the garden cemetery movement that swept the United States in the mid-19th century, the City of Worcester realized the need for a larger place to lay its dead. Worcester, which had become a city several years earlier, enjoyed a booming population caused by an influx of immigrants looking for work in its vast industrial sector. The city fathers took on the task of finding suitable grounds, and Hope Cemetery was founded in 1854 in a rural area of rolling hills and languid brooks. The space would hold the remains of a cross section of Worcester's residents, from the large mausoleums of prominent citizens to the small stones of young children. Hope Cemetery is a final resting place open to all citizens of the city--the rich, the poor, the notorious, and everyone in between. Today, Hope Cemetery is an active, "living" cemetery for the second-largest city in New England, as well as a place for loved ones and others to find solace and a place to stroll.
The Geometry of Visual Phonology

The Geometry of Visual Phonology

Linda Ann N. Uyechi

Centre for the Study of Language Information

pokkari
Uyechi presents an extremely thorough and formal empirical description of the various features of ASL signs, of interest to any theoretician in developing a theory of sign phonology or in testing claims in the theory of the phonology of spoken languages against data from a signed language. The author also presents a formalism for representing signs and makes a number of theoretical proposals based on this formalism. The volume's analysis indicates that the properties of core constructs of the spoken-language phonology, namely the segment and the syllable, differ from the properties of the core constructs in a formal framework of visual phonology. The Geometry of Visual Phonology also differs from other analyses in concluding that such differences are not immediately reconcilable. This volume provides a framework for discussing crucial differences between signs and speech.
