Camp William Penn in La Mott, Pennsylvania was the first official federal training camp for African American soldiers in the Civil War. Over 11,000 men, 40% of them former slaves, walked through the gates of Camp William Penn. Frederick Douglass was the main recruiter of the camp. The camp was on the land of the infamous abolitionist and women's rights suffragist, Lucretia Mott.
Eight year old Renate tried to escape Nazi Germany when she boarded the S.S. St. Louis with her mother on May 13, 1939. The St. Louis had 938 Jewish passengers including 200 children, many of them under the age of 10. Every passenger on the ship had a legal landing certificate to Cuba but were turned away when they arrived. The captain of the ship pleaded with the United States to take in the Jewish passengers but were told to return to Nazi Germany. The voyage of the St. Louis is one of the most tragic events in human history. Renate: A Jewish child who escaped Nazi Germany is the story of one of the few survivors of the St. Louis.
Harry Somers brought beauty into the world by painting peaceful, colorful scenes of a brighter tomorrow. As a young boy, Harry was forced to leave his family and everything he loved behind in Nazi Germany. Even though Harry lost everything in the Holocaust, he didn't live his life with hate. According to Harry, "the more you hate, the more you die." Read about the life of American artist Harry Somers in Bringing Beauty into the World and be inspired by his paintings and words of peace. Film director Erik Angra interviewed Harry during his final days of life and shared his story with Elkins Park School teacher Lise Marlowe. Mrs. Marlowe's 6th grade students were moved by Harry's story and wrote poetry to capture the beauty and struggles in his life.
David Tuck was 10 years old when he and his family were rounded up in Poland and sent to concentration camps because he was Jewish. He survived over 5 1/2 years in multiple camps and Lodz Ghetto.

Lise Meitner (1878-1968) was a pioneer of nuclear physics and co-discoverer, with Otto Hahn and Fritz Strassmann, of nuclear fission. Braving the sexism of the scientific world, she joined the prestigious Kaiser Wilhelm Institute for Chemistry and became a prominent member of the international physics community. Of Jewish origin, Meitner fled Nazi Germany for Stockholm in 1938 and later moved to Cambridge, England. Her career was shattered when she fled Germany, and her scientific reputation was damaged when Hahn took full credit - and the 1944 Nobel Prize - for the work they had done together on nuclear fission. Ruth Sime's absorbing book is the definitive biography of Lise Meitner, the story of a brilliant woman whose extraordinary life illustrates not only the dramatic scientific progress but also the injustice and destruction that have marked the twentieth century.

In this captivating biography, Patricia Rife interprets both the life and times of Lise Meitner (1878-1968), the female physicist at the heart of the discovery of nuclear fission. She was a colleague and friend of many of the giants of 20th century physics: M. Planck, her Berlin mentor, A. Einstein, M. von Laue, Madame M. Curie, J. Chadwick, W. Pauli, and N. Bohr. Meitner was the first woman to earn a Ph.D. in physics at the University of Vienna, a pioneer in the research of radioactive processes and, together with her nephew Otto Robert Frisch, an interpreter of the process of nuclear fission in 1938. Yet at the end of World War II, her colleague of thirty years, radiochemist Otto Hahn alone was awarded the 1944 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for the "discovery" of nuclear fission -- a discovery based on years of research in which Meitner was directly involved before her secret escape from Nazi Germany.

"A family album preserves only carefully selected photographs. Out of an entire life, it stores only handpicked moments, privileging special occasions, displaying only happy moments. It tends to underline a group’s social links, to highlight a shared life. None of this figures in She: instead of a chronology, time is stopped. There is no group photo or desire to stage a collective destiny, only isolated models and individuals who do not seem to communicate amongst themselves; no happy moments or picturesque places, only indifferent moments in ordinary places. The models pose, but reservedly, often without looking into the camera. And even when we do see their faces, we don’t really seem to see them. When we close the book and think a bit about it, we cannot but see She as the anti-family album par excellence." —Quentin Bajac, Chief Curator of Photography at the Museum of Modern Art
