The author, a clinical social worker, tells the story of how her personal and professional life was disrupted when she was struck by a car and sustained a traumatic brain injury. She describes how the injury impacted her physically, emotionally, and spiritually, and recounts her struggles to resume a meaningful life in the face of medical, financial, insurance, and legal problems."Days of Daze is a book of hope. When hit by a car during a noontime walk, the author, in a split second, loses her health, her job, and her image of herself as an intelligent and capable human being. As she struggles with the myriad complexities of her medical situation, she discovers a place within her that touches the divine, sustains her in hours of darkness, and illuminates the pathways of vibrant living. I highly recommend this gentle, gracious, and very readable book for anyone facing the uncertainties and complexities of life. Actually, I recommend it for everyone."--Reverend James McConnell, South Bend, Indiana"Days of Daze provides us with a source of encouragement in the journey through the great difficulty and frustration of traumatic brain injury. The author reveals to us her coping skills and her growing inner courage as she shares her struggle with the perceived setbacks in the process of therapeutic acceptance."--Matthew Davis, M.D., psychiatrist, South Bend, Indiana"Days of Daze shows how encountering a serious physical injury can be a profoundly enriching growth experience. It demonstrates that a well-lived life fully accepts each painful circumstance."--Judy Cassidy, Poet, Stevensville, Michigan
Although she struggles with ups and downs in the life of her Mennonite family, pretty and talented Victoria Unruh considers herself to be fortunate. Little does she know there is a story, carried along in the memories of her parents and older siblings, an underground river of silent shame that becomes a raging torrent when it converges with the stream of her own life. But in the end, the thorny stem that cuts and wounds bears a beautiful flower.

In 2014, Lois Jean Thomas published her memoir entitled Days of Daze: My Journey Through the World of Traumatic Brain Injury, recounting the story of how she sustained a brain injury when struck by a car while crossing the street. In this follow up book, she describes her efforts to cope with her lingering brain injury challenges, exploring the long-term physical, cognitive, emotional, and spiritual impact on her life. Says Ms. Thomas, "This book is not meant to be an authoritative resource on the topic of traumatic brain injury. It is only my story. While people who sustain brain injuries may share many similar symptoms, no two injuries are exactly alike. Each traumatic brain injury impacts a distinctive personality and disrupts a particular lifestyle. And each TBI survivor develops his or her unique ways of coping with impairment."
In this new book, the editors from the best-selling volume Rallying the Whole Village (1996), move beyond theory to present powerful, day-to-day experiences of change in school communities. Community members, business leaders, school board members, superintendents, principals, teachers, and parents across the country share their experiences as they have tried to create school communities in which all adults help young people develop and learn. Their indefatigable efforts are guided by their participation in the Yale School Development Program (SDP). A comprehensive program for systemic reform, the SDP provides the framework for organizing and operating schools effectively in order to promote students' academic achievement and life success. This framework places students' developmental needs at the center of all school decisions and establishes shared responsibility. In SDP school communities far more is expected of the students than just cognitive development. The professional development activities described in this book will help prepare preservice and in-service teachers, administrators, and parents to do the kind of collaborative diagnostic and problem-solving work that has been so successful in transforming schools across the country.
Actually, there are more than 200 apps for autism. This book will guide you through them, so you can confidently utilize today's technology to maximize your child or student's success! Speech Language Pathologist Lois Jean Brady wrote this book to educate parents, teachers, and other professionals about the breakthrough method she calls "iTherapy"—the use of Apple products (iPhone, iPad, iPod Touch) and various apps to meet students' individual educational goals.Lois believes that all persons on the spectrum can learn how to use technology in a way that is relevant to them. She shares important tips on how to use apps responsibly and effectively by maintaining a child centered, team approach to teaching and learning. Her approach takes into account the individual's interests, strengths/challenges, vision, motor planning, attention, sensory processing, memory, cognitive ability, environment, and access to tools. Lois also coaches adults on how they can use prompting and reinforcement techniques to help establish and generalize skills learned, until students are able to consistently demonstrate the skills in various environments (home, school, etc.).For those who are new to the wonderful world of apps, worry not! Lois provides helpful sections on how to get started, including:Choosing an iDevice Basic iDevice Operations Opening an Account How to Download an App from iTunes and more! But what about apps that were released since this book was published? Again—Lois has you covered! Children, particularly those on the autism spectrum, are able to acquire communication skills much more easily when their learning incorporates movement. Even very simple actions such as tapping and hand clapping can have a noticeable impact on their speech and language development. Speech in Action is an innovative approach to learning that combines simple techniques from speech and language pathology with physical exercises that have been carefully designed to meet the individual child's particular needs and abilities. This practical workbook describes the approach, and how it works, and contains 90 fully-photocopiable lesson plans packed with fun and creative ideas for getting both mouth and body moving. Suitable for use either at school or at home, the activities can be dipped into in any order, and are organised by level of ability, with something for everyone. The final chapter contains the success stories of children the authors have used the activities with, demonstrating how the approach can be used in practice. This will be a useful resource for teachers, occupational therapists, and other professionals who work with children with delayed communication skills, as well as parents and carers who would like to support their child's speech and language development at home.
