The lives of missionaries rarely follow a straight and leisurely line. Those who want to acquaint people with the contents of the Bible and lead them to a knowledge of the truth of the gospel of Jesus Christ, have to be prepared for anything. Hardly anyone can imagine what it means for such a person to leave the familiar European-Western cultural environment and learn to live in an alien social system, learn its language and its totally different thought patterns, and identify with it all. Missionaries see these experiences as life-fulfilling. Sometimes, though, they get caught between the front lines of world politics. That is when the most incredible things may happen, as shown by the life story of Wilhelm Friedrich and Elisabeth K rcher, the Liebenzell missionary couple. In the 1930s, they travel to Chuuk in Micronesia, a group of the Caroline Islands in the former German South Seas. With the outbreak of the Second WorldWar, the family is interned by the Japanese; they survive in the midst of bombing raids in an absolutely miraculous way; and afterwards, amidst great personal sacrifices, they rebuild a totally destroyed church structure which then became an independent body in the seventies, known as the "Evangelical Church of Chuuk" (EEC). The author, professor of ethnology, knew Wilhelm F. K rcher and his wife personally and, in response to their invitation, worked on Chuuk for several years as teacher and Bible translator.

German artist Lother Götz (b. 1963 in Gunzburg, Germany) completed an MA at the Royal College of Art in 1998, after studying in Germany at Aachen, Düsseldorf and Wuppertal. He has exhibited widely in the UK and abroad, with solo shows at galleries such as Gasworks (London), the Chisenhale (London), Mappin Art Gallery (Sheffield), Museum Goch (Germany), David Risley Gallery (Copenhagen) and the Petra Rinck Gallery (Dusseldorf), and has been included in group exhibitions in Amsterdam, Dublin, Hamburg, Hanover, Salamanca, Wilhelmshaven and Wuppertal. Perhaps best known for his large-scale wall paintings and installations, Götz’s drawings lie at the centre of his practice. Brought together in dense compositions on painted card and board, Götz’s thin pencil lines explore the impact of using varying colours and intensities on the work’s surface. Referencing and expanding upon the abstract language of Suprematism and the Bauhaus, the colours appear to oscillate in front of the viewer to immerse them in the surrounding space. Alongside over 40 colour illustrations, an essay by Charles Darwent explores the range of influences on Götz's recent body of work. To commemorate the publication, Götz created a limited-edition lithograph, Correction (2015), in collaboration with Hole Editions. Each edition is hand-finished by the artist and contained within a custom-made slipcase.
This book provides an English translation of the early fundamental contributions of Lothar Meyer (1830-1895) regarding his independent discovery, coincident with that of Dmitrii Mendeleev, of the periodic system of the elements. Although an English translation of the 5th edition of Meyer´s book Modern Theories of Chemistry and their Significance for Chemical Statics was published in 1888, this will be the first time that these crucial early texts will be available in English. These writings reveal details regarding Meyer´s research pathway to the idea of periodicity and to an arrangement of the chemical elements in tables and graphs. An introductory commentary and interpolated editorial footnotes to the texts clarify the (physico)-chemical background regarding the various shifts in thought during the crucial period from 1860 to the early 1870s. A short biography of Lothar Meyer completes the book. The volume includes a complete translation of the first edition of Modern Theories of Chemistry and their Significance for Chemical Statics (1864), the ground-breaking paper “The Nature of the Chemical Elements as a Function of their Atomic Weights” in Annalen der Chemie und Pharmacie, suppl. vol. 7 (1870), 354-64, and portions of the revised second edition of Modern Theories of Chemistry and their Significance for Chemical Statics (1872).
