Lord Elgin and Ancient Greek Architecture

Lord Elgin and Ancient Greek Architecture

Luciana Gallo

Cambridge University Press

This book analyses the rich and remarkable collection of archaeological drawings, now housed in The British Museum, drawn in Greece by a team of architects and artists in the service of Lord Elgin during his ambassadorial expedition to the Levant (1799–1803). Luciana Gallo offers a new interpretation of Elgin's interest in antiquities and reveals the aims, innovative approach, and significant achievements of this specialised tour. She also reveals his contribution to the advancement of contemporary archaeological studies carried out by British and continental scholars, in connection to the search for original sources to promote Greek Revival architecture. This is the first time that the bulk of the Elgin Drawings collection in the British Museum has been published. The volume will thus serve as an indispensable guide to scholars and students of ancient Greek architecture and sculpture, as well as of nineteenth-century architectural revivalism.

Epithelial cells exhibit an apical–basolateral axis of polarity that is generated during embryogenesis, is maintained throughout adult life in the face of constant cell regeneration, and is perturbed in several epithelial-associated diseases. We examine the structural and functional organization of epithelial tissues, as well as the events critical for generating epithelial asymmetry including vectorial trafficking of proteins and lipids, association of signaling and polarity proteins with subdomains of the plasma membrane, and 3D orientation of epithelial cells in response to cell–cell and cell–matrix interactions. As a paradigm to understand how these three processes are coordinated in time and space, we explore apical lumen formation. We also examine the final steps in epithelial morphogenesis, including brush border morphogenesis and ciliogenesis. Finally, we provide examples of disease processes that result from defects in epithelial polarity including diabetes insipidus, microvillar inclusion disease, hereditary deafness, ciliopathies, and cancer.

Noel Gallagher is as well-known for his singer-songwriter talent as he is for his controversial, outspoken statements and his tempestuous relationships. Noel found worldwide acclaim with Oasis and influence the musical style of a generation. At the forefront of the Britpop movement in the Nineties, Noel was responsible for writing some of the big anthems, including 'Wonderwall', 'Don't Look Back in Anger', 'Supersonic' and 'Champagne Supernova'. Even his b-sides were influential, with 'Half the World Away' being used as the theme for The Royle Family. At their peak Oasis were playing sold-out concerts to over 200,000 people. But what is the truth about the boy from Manchester? How did his relationship with his father affect him? what caused the public and personal rivalry with fellow Britpop band Blur? Why has he always had such a turbulent relationship with his brother and front man of Oasis, Liam? Is the band over for good this time? This book maps out Noel's story from the beginning. It takes you from his dysfunctional upbringing in Manchester to the man we know now. Throughout his teens Noel regularly truanted and it was during this time that he stared to tech himself to play the guitar. While working in construction he began to write songs and after acting as a roadie for Inspiral Carpets, he joined his younger brother Liam's and Oasis and set them on the path to glory.

More than a million patient safety incidents occur every year, and medical error is the third leading cause of death in the United States. Illuminating the experiences of those affected by medical error-patients, their loved ones, and physicians and other medical professionals- Talking with Patients and Families about Medical Error delves deeply into the challenges of communicating honestly and openly about mistakes in medical practice. Based on guidelines from the Institute for Professional and Ethical Practice and the authors' own experiences, the practice-based approaches outlined here offer concrete guidance on * initiating discussions * dealing professionally and compassionately with patients' reactions * who should be included in the conversation* what information should be documented in the medical record* how to respond to questions about financial compensation Aimed at promoting resolution and healing, this book stresses the importance of clear, empathetic communication that will improve clinical and organizational responses to medical missteps and mismanagement. It emphasizes five features of the physician-patient relationship deserving of special attention: transparency, respect, accountability, continuity, and kindness (TRACK). Narrative examples of common situations demonstrate how conversations about medical error can lead to healing.
