In 1807, a small rural New York press published the first edition of P. D. Manvill's ""Lucinda""; or, ""The Mountain Mourner"". Over the next five decades no fewer than ten printings of the novel appeared in three different states. In the book, the eponymous heroine is one of seven children left to the ailing and poverty-stricken widower Adrian Manvill. Although it is a memoir, ""Lucinda"" reads like a sentimental epistolary novel, where the heroine is seduced, abandoned, and then dies in isolation shortly after her illegitimate child is born. Mischelle B. Anthony's critical edition rescues this once-popular cautionary tale from obscurity and positions it among such classic early American narratives as ""Charlotte Temple"" and ""The Coquette"". In addition to providing insight into the Republican and nineteenth-century reading culture, ""Lucinda"", as a historical document, provides a glimpse into one family and one community dealing with radical social and economic issues in early America. In her introduction, Anthony sheds light on the text's multiple functions among its nineteenth-century readership and draws attention to its unique status as a narrative written by a participant in the events.

Bakersfield, California June 20, 2016 Lucinda is the story of a woman who trained herself to seek money by any means necessary. She had some of the coldest methods for capturing that elusive dollar. So many people in the world thought important enough to chase. With Lucinda, every move she made meant money and more money. She was a firm believer that nothing in this world was free and she made that very clear with every transaction she executed. If she could sell water to a shark, she would. And if anyone could sell a dream to another go-getter, she could and she did. With a connect that the average hustler would die for, she made the moves in the streets that many hustlers could only imagine making.

The fate of the world depends on a young woman's decision... Lucinda is an obscure but formidable psychic working in a London backstreet. She is plucked out of her obscurity to undertake a fantasy adventure quest for the Lords of the Path of Purest Light. Lucinda is taken to the south-west of Ireland by her mentor, Jacinta. Here, she meets with Lord Innanah. Innanah sets her on an action adventure to locate two nails that are relics from the Crucifixion Cross. These nails are thought to be hidden either in Egypt or on Skellig Michael, a monastic island off the coast of Ireland. These nails possess immense power for good or evil. However, the evil Fallen Lords of the Paths of Darkness wish to prevent her finding these nails. Her adversary in this fantasy adventure quest is Ethan Thomas, the Ninth Master - a powerful psychic working for the Fallen Lords of the Paths of Darkness. He warns her not to continue with her quest. Lucinda ignores his advice. Lucinda has the ability to time travel. She goes back to 6th Century Egypt to meet with a monk called Lazarus the Lazy who is about to embark on a secret mission to take the two nails - which have lain hidden in Egypt for several centuries - to Skellig Michael for safe keeping. The Ninth Master - also a time traveller - pursues her to Egypt and is instrumental in having her imprisoned by the Byzantine Romans. However, he becomes enthralled by her psychic powers and physical attractiveness. He urges her to join him. He reveals that he has actually been protecting her from the Paths of Darkness who want to kill her. He admits he is now a renegade from that organisation. Lucinda refuses to join him as she does not trust him. But she realises she is deeply and dangerously attracted to him. He is probably the only man who can satisfy all her needs. In spite of being rejected, the Ninth Master allows her to escape. On Lucinda's return to the present time, she discovers that the secret location of the Crucifixion nails on Skellig Michael was lost when Abbot Eitgal was killed by Vikings in the late 9th Century when they were attempting to discover these nails for themselves. Lucinda time travels to the period of the Vikings' raid on the island. Before he dies, Abbot Eitgal hints where the nails are concealed to Lucinda. She returns to the present and travels to Skellig Michael, the island monastery, to find the nails. Meanwhile, the Paths of Darkness have sent a team of 'archaeologists' to Skellig Michael to kill her and recover the nails for themselves; but, just as she is about to fall off a high cliff and plunge to her death, Lucinda is rescued. She learns why the Path of Purest Light wants the nails - it orders her to kill the Ninth Master with them because, sometime in the future, an act of his will help bring about the destruction of the world. The only way to prevent this happening is to eliminate him now - and only these Crucifixion nails have the power to utterly destroy him. Realising that she really does love him, she refuses to do this. She now becomes a defector from the Path of Purest Light. She wants to throw away the nails so that they can't be used to destroy the Ninth Master but he persuades her not to do that. Lucinda hides them in another secret location so that they are available to her should she need them at some future time. She agrees to join up with the Ninth Master and together they plan to save the world from its impending doom.
