The texts of Luigi Pirandello, one of the literary giants of this century, have been subject to widely different readings by successive generations of critics. These essays present an up-to-date re-evaluation of Pirandello's works, which include poetry, novels, short stories, plays, essays, letters, and memoirs. Arranged in four sections - Introduction, Structures, Meanings, and Innovations - the volume presents a variety of provocative viewpoints and offers an accurate picture of the network of issues inhabiting the author's oeuvre. In the introductory section the editors provide an informative overview of the status of Pirandellian studies today. The book examines the recent upsurge of interest in Pirandello and offers outstanding material for courses in Italian studies, comparative studies, theatre, and the humanities.

First Published in 1993. Contemporary Theatre Studies is a book series of special interest to everyone involved in theatre. This collection of documents is the first attempt in English to bring together a body of material on Luigi Pirandello as multi-faceted man of the theatre. Because relatively few of his works have been easily available to English language readers, he is thought of most frequently as a playwright, the author of Six Characters in Search of an Author and Henry IV in particular, and his contribution to theatre, both in theory and in practice, has tended to be overlooked. Emphasising his role as a director, the book traces the rise and fall of his own theatre company, the Teatro d’Arte where he struggled to instil new practices and comments on Pirandello’s attempts during the years of Fascism to give Italy a national theatre in a European context.

Luigi Pirandello - Versuch Einer Neuinterpretation

In this introduction to the life and literary contributions of a Nobel Prize winner and one of Italy's most distinguished writers, Fiora A. Bassanese surveys the stories, novels, and plays of Luigi Pirandello and evaluates the significance of his influence on twentieth-century literature. Describing Pirandello as a prototypical modernist, Bassanese traces his artistic development from his early roots in Sicilian provincialism and positivist thought to his attainment of international fame as an innovative dramatis and a thought-provoking narrator. She contends that his works helped to bring an end to nineteenth-century optimism. They transformed Italian theater and fiction by catapulting both into the modern era. Bassanese's discussion begins with an overview of key episodes in Pirandello's life and with an explanation of how such events shaped his fictional universe. She reveals Pirandello's literary microcosm to be a world marked by paradox, relativity, uncertainty, madness, and existential angst. Bassanese examines individual works in the Pirandellian canon, with each chapter highlighting a representative period in the development of Pirandello's art and thought. She draws attention to the unforgettable characters created by Pirandello's fertile imagination and explains how they embody his views on epistemology, ontology, and artistic creation. In chapters dedicated to his theater trilogies and other later works, Bassanese reviews the dramatist's contributions to the stage and discusses his late fascination with the uses of myth. Illumining the connections between his nondramatic works and his plays, she argues that in his seminal play Six Characters in Search of an Author, Pirandelloemploys stagecraft to challenge the traditional notions of the theater, much in the same way that his novels challenge the postulates of naturalism in fiction.

Luigi Pirandello is best known in the English-speaking world for his radical challenge to traditional Western theatre with plays such as Six Characters in Search of an Author. But theatre is just one manifestation of his experiments with language which led to a remarkable collection of novels, short stories, and essays as well as his work for a film industry then in its infancy. This study, which is based on the view that Pirandello's writings are most fruitfully discussed in a European context, takes as its starting-point the author's belief in the primacy of the literary character in a creative process which is necessarily conflictual. The book argues that all Pirandello's characters are engaged in a continual performance which transcends the genre distinction between narrative and dramatic forms. In this performance it is the spoken word in which the characters invest most heavily as they struggle to sustain an identity of their own, tell their life-stories, and assert themselves before their most prominent antagonist, the author himself.
