A History of the 'New Mathematics' Movement and its Relationship with Current Mathematical Reform
A History of the 'New Mathematics' Movement and its Relationship with Current Mathematical Reform provides a history of the 'new mathematics' movement of the 1950s, 1960s, and early 1970s in the United States and relates it to current mathematics curricular reform. The history of the 'new math' education movement is explained in terms of the general curriculum in schools, the mathematics curriculum, the teaching standards, and the pedagogical techniques used. A complete analysis of the history of the 'new math' movement was accomplished by separately investigating major and minor 'new math' projects. In conjunction, the aftermath of the 'new math' movement is explained providing suggestions as to why this movement is often seen as having failed. A short history of reform from the 1970s to the present is provided. Finally, the book compares the 'new mathematics' movement with the current mathematics reform movement led by the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics.

A History of Mathematics Education during the Twentieth Century describes the history of mathematics education in the United States with conceptual themes concerning philosophy, mathematics content, teacher education, pedagogy, and assessment. Each decade of the twentieth century is analyzed using historical documents, within the context of the aforementioned themes, to create a concise history of mathematical reform as it relates to history within the United States. Finally, conclusions are drawn as to which reform movements are similar and different throughout the century—depicting which aspects of reform can be seen again. Mathematics education tends to swing on a pendulum from "traditional education" including teacher-directed instruction with an emphasis on computation skills to "reform education," including student-directed instruction with an emphasis on problem solving. All decades are analyzed to see where they were on the pendulum and what aspects may have contributed to the current reform movements led by the Standards movement.

Occupy Education is motivated by the sustainability crisis and energized by the drive for social justice that inspired the Occupy movement. Situated within the struggle for sustainability taking place amid looming resource shortages, climate change, economic instability, and ecological breakdown, the book is a timely contribution to community education and action. It opens a whole realm of integrated theory to educators and sustainability activists – and demonstrates how that theory can be moved into practice. Occupy Education is an excellent text for courses in sustainability studies, social philosophy, globalization, social justice, food system praxis, sustainability education, political economy, and environmental studies.

In the long, complex history of coal exploitation in Appalachia, mountaintop-removal (MTR) mining is the most destructive practice yet visited upon the land and its people: Ancient forested mountainsides are blown up to extract the underlying coal, and the resulting debris is dumped into nearby valleys and streams. The politics and economics of mining in the region have long allowed coal companies virtually free rein, but in recent years, opposition to MTR has gained national momentum. This illustrated volume, like the powerful documentary film on which it is based, gives voice to the growing chorus of protest against MTR mining in Appalachia through a collection of essays, oral history, commentary, and images. It features many of the personalities from the film in their own words, as well as thoughtful essays by such eloquent voices as writers Wendell Berry and Silas House, activist Judy Bonds, journalists Michael Shnayerson and Denise Giardina, and entertainers Kathy Mattea and Ashley Judd.Illustrations include contemporary photography of this still-beautiful region -- and of mining devastation and the affected landscapes, communities, and people -- by noted photojournalists such as Mark Schmerling, Builder Levy, and Vivian Stockman. Sidebars feature excerpts from contemporary and historical literature, poetry, song lyrics, drawings, cartoons, and ephemera.

How could a place seeded in slavery and drenched in the cruelest forms of racism survive to become the community's educational, social, and political heart? What combination of circumstances and human will enable people to overcome every manner of roadblocks placed in their way? How could one place produce such a broad range of outstanding community, state, national, and international leaders in nearly every imaginable field of endeavor? These are a few of the questions answered in the book about James B. Dudley High School then and now. This 2021 edition of A Place Where Success Was Expected includes a more extensive study of the school's founding on Bennett College's campus in 1879, including the years before the existing campus was built. The book also includes more than 40 additional excerpts about Dudley alumni and topics related to African American high school students' education in Greensboro and Guilford County. It is a comprehensive history of African Americans' education in Greensboro, North Carolina, and parts of Guilford County as told through the insights and experiences of some of the people who lived and worked for over five generations in the South. The story is told as only those who lived through slavery, through Jim Crow, through integration, and back again could tell it. A Place Where Success Was Expected uses a unique form of historical content that blends first-person narration with analytical writing that presents the reader with rare insight into African American life in the South from the 16th Century through the early 21st Century.
