Michael E. Smith occasionally creates drawings as organizational notes for his exhibitions: a to-do list may be intertwined with a sketch outlining an idea for a sculpture, and at times, drawings emerge as impromptu phone scribbles. Over the past fifteen years, Michael E. Smith has accumulated a substantial collection of drawings, largely unpublished until now. To complement the exhibition dedicated to the artist, the Kunst Museum Winterthur is releasing an artist book featuring a comprehensive selection of drawings from this period.

Ever since the invention of the readymade at the start of the last century, when everyday objects were selected to be shown as art objects, the differentiation between art and everyday life is no longer straightforward and now very much dependent on context. The public presentation of readymades and their appropriation in the context of Pop Art during the 1960s, a period of great economic prosperity, has considerably increased the influence of both product and advertising design on art. Aesthetics familiar from everyday life have brought about fundamental changes in art in terms of content. Art appreciation can no longer function without considering the interdependencies between the operating system of art and its development within consumer society. The appropriation of consumer goods has turned the microsystem of art into an actual zone of conflict between material and materialism, and works of art have thus become veritable fetish objects. These interdependencies form the point of departure for the exhibition and the accompanying book Form Matters, Matter Forms with works ranging from Marcel Duchamp to the present day.

The decorated sandals worn by prehistoric southwesterners with their complex fibre structures and designs have been dissected, described and interpreted for a century. Nevertheless, these artefacts remain mysterious in many respects. Teague and Washburn examine these sandals as sources of information on the history of the people known as the Basketmakers. The unique sandals of early southwestern farmers appear in Basketmaker II and reach their greatest elaboration with the complex fabric structures and colourbanded designs of Basketmaker III. The appearance of this footwear coincides with the transition to fully sedentary maize agriculture. The authors address the origins of these sandals and what they may reveal about population movements onto and around the Colorado Plateau and about the cosmology of early farmers.

A concise introduction to the pioneering media artist, from drawings to net-based art For over 50 years, Lynn Hershman Leeson (born 1941) has created an innovative and prescient body of work that mines intersections between technology and the self. Known for her pioneering contributions to media art, Hershman Leeson has consistently worked in tandem with the latest technological developments from Artificial Intelligence to DNA programming, often anticipating many of the issues affecting society today. Twisted brings together a selection of the artist’s work in drawing, sculpture, video, photography, and interactive and net-based art, focusing on themes of transmutation, identity construction and the evolution of the cyborg. It includes some of Hershman Leeson’s most important projects, including the Breathing Machine sculptures; early drawings from the 1960s, many of which have never been shown; works from the Roberta Breitmore series (1970–79), perhaps her best-known project, in which she transformed her own identity into a fictional persona; selections from her Water Women series (1976–2010); and many more.

The constructivist and abstract works Chadwick produced between 1963 and 1966 are essential to any analysis of his oeuvre. These sculptures demonstrate that Chadwick was as in touch with the zeitgeist as many of his younger contemporaries.
