Kayab is helping two of his younger brothers, Yari and Imonex, learn everything they need to know before they can join the ranks of men. They learn to catch large fish and turtles with remoras (sucker fish), to make stone ax heads with handles that won't fly off, and rubber belts for their game of batey (ball game)-all done by harnessing the technology of nature. Little do they know that Christopher Columbus and his men are landing on nearby Guanahan and will soon land on their island. This is Book Eight in Dr. Lynne Guitar's "Ta no Ni Rah (Children of the Water) Series." All 10 books in the series take place just as Christopher Columbus and his motley crews are about to disrupt the Ta nos' lives forever. Each book is in both English and Spanish. Guides to the books' historical backgrounds, characters, pronunciation, and extended explanations of Ta no words used are also provided for educational purposes. --- Kayab est ayudando a dos de sus hermanos menores, Yari e Imonex, a aprender todo lo que necesitan saber antes de que puedan unirse a la categor a de los hombres. Poetry. "Lynne Thompson's START WITH A SMALL GUITAR is a dazzling collection of love poems, wickedly wise and stitched with the darkest nuances of desire. These poems are rich in childhood play and the adult pleasures of consolation, yet even at their most reflective and speculative these poems are fleshed by the carnal. This new collection is either a handbook to bliss or the abyss, and she insists that the reader--each one of us--decide."--David St. John

Mary Field Belenky, Lynne A. Bond, and Jacqueline S. Weinstock, hoping to carry Belenky's theoretical work in the bestselling Women's Ways of Knowing into the realm of everyday life, created the Listening Partners project, designed to help young women isolated in rural poverty give voice to their personal and communal needs and come together to create social change . A Tradition That Has No Name explores this project and the work of other women who have created organizations to give voice to and strengthen traditions of community organizing and leadership, particularly as they have developed in communities of women marginalized by race and class. Ranging across cultures and classes, from struggling inner-city neighbourhoods to affluent middle-class suburbs, from African American communities in the South to poor rural communities in Vermont, the book teaches us how to appreciate the ways women create networks of listening and community-building, and how to bring these little-recognized traditions of women's activism to the forefront of public life. It is these public homeplaces" women create together, the authors argue, that hold the key for empowering communities and creating social change.

The Fruit, the Tree, and the Serpent

Lynne A. Isbell

From the temptation of Eve to the venomous murder of the mighty Thor, the serpent appears throughout time and cultures as a figure of mischief and misery. The worldwide prominence of snakes in religion, myth, and folklore underscores our deep connection to the serpent—but why, when so few of us have firsthand experience? The surprising answer, this book suggests, lies in the singular impact of snakes on primate evolution. Predation pressure from snakes, Lynne Isbell tells us, is ultimately responsible for the superior vision and large brains of primates—and for a critical aspect of human evolution. Drawing on extensive research, Isbell further speculates how snakes could have influenced the development of a distinctively human behavior: our ability to point for the purpose of directing attention. A social activity (no one points when alone) dependent on fast and accurate localization, pointing would have reduced deadly snake bites among our hominin ancestors. It might have also figured in later human behavior: snakes, this book eloquently argues, may well have given bipedal hominins, already equipped with a non-human primate communication system, the evolutionary nudge to point to communicate for social good, a critical step toward the evolution of language, and all that followed.

The texts reproduced in facsimile in the three volumes of 'Legal Treatises' reconstruct the legal status of the early modern Englishwoman. To facilitate a reading of the treatises by broadly defining many of the laws discussed in great detail in the treatises, a general introduction to the laws of the period provides concise overviews of the structure of the English legal system; the legal education of practitioners of the law; the kinds of legal literature produced in the period; and the legal position of early modern Englishwomen. A bibliography of important secondary scholarship devoted to the early modern Englishwoman's legal position assists the reader in obtaining more specialized knowledge. In addition to the general introduction, a separate introduction to each of the reproduced works is provided, including information about each work's publication and authorship, intended audience, content and reception. In order to provide this framework for the years 1600-1750, this first volume of 'Legal Treatises' reproduces The Lawes Resolutions of Womens Rights (1632), the first known treatise devoted to the legal rights of women. 'The Womans Lawyer,' as the treatise's running headline and spine title read, was published anonymously in 1632; the title page fails to identify the original author of the work, and its authorship remains in question today. At over 400 pages, the text represents a massive effort of consolidation, organizing the disparate and hitherto uncompiled aspects of the common law applicable to women into a logical framework. It is unusual among early modern legal treatises in its stated goal of providing a 'popular kind of instruction' to its readers.
