Allen's List was published in 2011 and tells the story of an internet entrepreneur who scored big in the era following the burst of the DOT.COM bubble. It is about a man who wanted to ride the crest of a profound change in American society and ingenuity. In some ways the DOT.COM bubble happened because the culture that was to be had not yet reached maturity. Those who were the creators of the internet world that would emerge did not yet have the clientele in place because the personal computer was still making its presence felt in the popular culture. Having only come to market in 1981, the PC as it came to be called, was still a business machine that aspired to be a popular icon. When music and photography became digitalized, there was no stopping the development of the computer movement in American society. Thirty years later, the computer had become almost as commonplace in the home as the television. Unlike the television, it was highly interactive and marketers were now jumping on the bandwagon. What could not be foreseen in 1981 was the social media phenomenon. People had been using their personal computers for online shopping, gambling and even bidding on auction sites. But what came about in 2004 out of Harvard University's IT innovation labs was going to change the whole world of the PC. Facebook, MySpace and other social sites like Twitter and YouTube would bring another dimension, the audio-visual realism to computing. Where earlier computers could not manage the memory demands of digital images, the new, easily accessible home computer, was now linked to the internet. Because it had more efficient transmission speeds, this faster and more powerful machine would again move the computer culture forward to rival the television's visuals. The story of Allen Dowling, internet entrepreneur, is part of this socio-economic growth online. Somewhere around 2009, a critical mass of home computer ownership was reached and there would be no turning back. But even more essential to this social evolution in America, was the fact that twenty year olds like Mark Zuckerberg were coming of age in the computer culture. It was in their DNA; their lifeblood was programmed to think not "what can we do with the computer," but "how far can we go with the computer." Coupon Explosion is the story of this expansion.

Laurence Leonard Dowling, born in 1915 in Albany Western Australia was a man of few words but with a history of life experience that is testimony to the troubled times in which he lived: the Great Depression, the Second World War and the unaddressed problems of a wartime survivor. A childhood of poverty, schooled in a life of hard knocks, he remained a stoical survivor despite life's many adversities. He fought in El Alamein as well as Tobruk and received an oak leaf for his courage. Descended from a long line of miners, he found solace for his soul prospecting for gold in the outback of Western Australia which was the only medicine he knew for his soul that had been ravaged by war. As my father, he inspired my love for the Australian bush, gifted me his love of Australian poets, the stars, the fl owers and the natural world. He was a man of action, an incisive thinker, courageous and generous and one who was well acquainted with this land, its pastoral stations, fi shing and mining industries, and heavy manufacture. He had turned his hand to it all including building sections of the remote Trans-Australian railway line across the Nullabor plain. He was a poet and a dreamer even in his darkest hours. Laurie was a true Australian patriot and pioneer of extraordinary talents which he applied in both the good and bad times. He was indeed a "man for all seasons."

A major new biography of Eugene O'Neill, the Nobel Prize–winning dramatist who revolutionized American theater“Restores balance to the slightly skewed twenty-first century reputation of America’s greatest playwright. . . . [An] important story, perceptively recounted.”—Wendy Smith, Washington PostFinalist for the Los Angeles Times Book Prize This extraordinary new biography fully captures the intimacies of Eugene O’Neill’s tumultuous life and the profound impact of his work on American drama. Robert M. Dowling innovatively recounts O’Neill’s life in four acts, thus highlighting how the stories he told for the stage interweave with his actual life stories. Each episode also uncovers how O’Neill’s work was utterly intertwined with, and galvanized by, the culture and history of his time. Much is new in this extensively researched book: connections between O’Neill’s plays and his political and philosophical worldview; insights into his Irish upbringing and lifelong torment over losing faith in God; his vital role in African American cultural history; unpublished photographs, including a unique offstage picture of him with his lover Louise Bryant; new evidence of O’Neill’s desire to become a novelist and what this reveals about his unique dramatic voice; and a startling revelation about the release of Long Day’s Journey Into Night in defiance of his explicit instructions. This biography is also the first to discuss O’Neill’s lost play Exorcism (a single copy of which was only recently recovered), a dramatization of his own suicide attempt. Written with lively informality yet a scholar’s strict accuracy, Eugene O’Neill: A Life in Four Acts is a biography that America’s foremost playwright richly deserves.

Recent federal court activity has dramatically changed the regulatory environment of campaign finance in the United States. Since 2010, the judiciary has decided that corporations and labor unions may freely spend in American elections, and that so-called "Super PACs" can accept unlimited contributions from private citizens for the purpose of buying election advertising. Despite the potential for such unregulated contributions to dramatically alter the conduct of campaigns, little is known about where Super PACs get their money, where they spend it, or how their message compares with other political groups. Moreover, we know almost nothing about whether individual citizens even notice Super PACs, or whether they distinguish between Super PAC activity and political activity by other political groups. This book addresses those questions. Using campaign finance data, election returns, advertising archives, a public opinion survey, and survey experiments, Super PAC! provides unprecedented insight into the behavior of these organizations, and how they affect public opinion and voting behavior. The first in-depth exploration of the topic, this book will make significant contributions in both political science and applied policy.

Through a careful and lively analysis of censorship in the Areopagitica, Paul M. Dowling challenges prevailing views of Milton as a Puritan and grapples with a perennial political issue: censorship. In addition to refuting traditional interpretations of Milton, Dowling's reading of the Areopagitica questions the currently fashionable assumption that thinkers unconsciously reflect the tenor of their times. Polite Wisdom will be of interest of political philosophers as well as scholars and students of English literature.

A revelatory, magisterial biography of Sam Shepard--the dark, rugged genius of modern American theater and film, "the poet laureate of America's emotional badlands" (Jack Kroll). Sam Shepard was a true American original. A theater and film icon who lived life on a mythic scale, Shepard became an embodiment of the fierce independence and wild freedom of the American West. Taking us from the creative explosion of downtown New York City in the 1960s to Bob Dylan's legendary Rolling Thunder Revue tour, from Hollywood backlots and film shoots in the Mojave Desert to the horse ranches where Shepard went to escape it all, Robert M. Dowling's biography reveals this playwright, actor, and filmmaker as we've never known him before. In this authoritative and gripping biography, acclaimed biographer Robert M. Dowling dives into Shepard's psyche, his imagination and his soul, to craft the most comprehensive and revelatory account yet of Shepard's enduring work and tumultuous life. Ranging from Shepard's romances with icons like Patti Smith, Joni Mitchell, and Jessica Lange, to his groundbreaking artistic contributions to theater and film like True West, Buried Child, The Right Stuff, Days of Heaven, and Paris, Texas, Dowling draws on previously untapped archival resources and the help of members of Shepard's family, close friends, lovers, and collaborators to place this artistic legacy in the context of the historic upheavals that compelled this extraordinary writer to so vividly record the American zeitgeist. In this biography, we see Shepard's life, and his era, in all its splendor and chaos, from the 1960s counterculture to the rise of Trumpism. Situating the facts of Shepard's spirited and darkly complex personality alongside keen analyses of Shepard's ingenious writing, this new biography couples rich storytelling with scholarly rigor to present the definitive biography of one of America's most innovative and troubled creative geniuses.

Practical advice for taking the sting out of feedback and making it what it should be: a positive and healthy experience--for both the giver and receiver--and a powerful way to improve yourself and your team. Feedback Ugh. Say the word to a colleague, your spouse, or a friend, and watch both their blood pressure rise and their defenses go up. For most of us, it's a word loaded with experiences that may include bias, politics, pain, regret, and anger. However, if we take a step back and think about its true intent, we realize that feedback needn't be a bad thing. We humans want to improve, grow, and advance, and we need insights that can help us move in the right direction. If we close ourselves off from understanding how others experience us, then we close ourselves off to a life of learning and growth. The authors address how feedback got such a bad rap and how we can fix it. They provide three key "F's" (focused, fair, and frequent) for positive feedback. They also include a slew of practical exercises and strategies to change how we view and experience feedback.
