Nothing is more reasonable and relevant than to try to understand the cross and live in the spirit of what the cross stands for. The cross is certainly personally relevant for each of us. Jesus said, "If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me." (Luke 9:24) Don't miss the miracle of God's truth and love revealed in Christ.

Jesus taught great truths about life and faith and morality - but not in abstractions. Instead, he told interesting stories about everyday people like us, in ordinary settings, such as we know -parents and their children, people at work, pray¬ing, attending weddings, going down the highway, or at a dinner party. In his incomparable stories Jesus helps us understand how to live wisely and well. It is those immortal stories, and their meaning for our lives, which I ask you to consider in the next chapters, beginning today.

This series of messages "Ourselves And Our God ", presented by Dr. Burke, deals with the mystery of God; the power and greatness of God; life in the Spirit of God; God's plan and will for our lives; and how we can more effectively open our lives to the full life God intends. The series is based on the prayer, "...and grow in the knowledge of God. (Colossians 1:10). Dr. Burke writes: "I want to share with you some thoughts about 'Ourselves And God " The need of our lives, our church and our world are summed up in Colossians 1:10. 'We pray that you bear fruit in active goodness of every kind and grow in the knowledge of God.' How shall we picture God in our minds? How shall we frame a true conception of God? What is God like? After what image are we created? Those are the questions we shall deal with."

Enjoying life is important because it helps us live at our best. Enjoying life creates good in the world - for ourselves and for others. Enjoying life is part of God's intention for us. One of the most important, personal and practical questions is this: How can I enjoy life more? This is the essence of the deep human quest. We are all engaged in a search for a more satisfying and enjoyable life. To enjoy life is really nothing else than conformity of our human nature with its intended purpose. "Good Things To Be Thankfully Enjoyed " is the first message in a series of sermons entitled, " Having An Enjoyable Life ", presented by Dr. Burke. The scripture is based on l Timothy 4:3: "...good things which God created to be thankfully enjoyed," and Matthew 11:16-19: "The Son of Man came enjoying life...." The second message in the series entitled, " Three Ways To Enjoy Life More " is based on the scripture in ll Corinthians 1:12-24, "Your faith is firm enough-but we can work with you to increase your joy. The third message entitled, "Enjoying Life Creates Good " is based on the scripture in l Thessalonians 1:1-8. "A cheerful heart does good...." (Proverbs 17:22)

What do we know about God? And love? About the laws of God for abundant living? Being happy? Living a satisfying life? What do we know about death: Jesus said to his Disciples before he faced death, "Do not be afraid...." What have we discovered about the church? Is it really, as scripture says, "the pillar and bulwark of the truth"? What have we discovered about the worship of God and prayer? Are there "more things wrought by prayer than this world dreams or, as the poet says? What have we discovered about faith? The Bible says, "This is the victory that overcomes the world - our faith." Is that true? What have you discovered about God? What is God like? Where is God? Is God really the maker of all things? Jesus Christ came to reveal God to us What do you know about love? "Love makes the world go 'round" we used to say. And it is a powerful need of every human being. Jesus taught us about love What do you know about finding inner peace? What have you discovered about how to live? My point is that the religious resources are even greater than the physical resources of the universe. The kingdom of God is the greatest dream ever to enter the human mind. It is a vision worthy of our utmost allegiance. It is the goal of history. "To be a Christian means to be possessed and dominated by a hope of the kingdom of God," said Albert Schweitzer. It is the central theme of Jesus' teachings. He set before us this noblest ideal of individual life and human society - God's rule in the human heart and in the human community.
