Discover the lessons of a life lived in service with this memoir, Medicine and Me. Written by Richard C. Reynolds, MD, this fascinating collection chronicles the life of an extraordinary eighty-four-year-old doctor, beginning with his humble upbringing by parents who never completed high school. Nevertheless, Reynolds went on to launch a long and storied career that has seen triumphs and troubles, successes and failures, and some of the most breathtaking advances in medicine over the past half century. Through it all, Reynolds weaves in the heartwarming love story between himself and a nurse-who became his wife. Richard C. Reynolds, MD, graduated from John Hopkins School of Medicine and completed a residency in internal medicine at Johns Hopkins Hospital. He has held academic appointments at the University of Florida, the former University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey, and served as executive vice president of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. After decades of working as a doctor, Reynolds still believes that medicine is the "best game in town."

We as primates have struggled mightily during the past 85 million years to find and eat enough food for survival. Fortunately, every one of your ancestors was successful so that you might succeed in that same endeavor. However, today that survival is in jeopardy. Recently and suddenly, from an evolutionary standpoint, the problem of subsistence in "civilized" countries has inverted: we have plenty of food but are not making selections that lead to long-term survival. Our plant-based ancestral diets for which we have become genetically adapted have become animal-based. For thousands of millennia, primate nutrition happened while seeking a wide variety fruits and vegetables sufficiently energy-dense to supply our needed daily calories. Today we still seek energy-dense foods, but in the form of high fat animal products or sweet processed foods. Nutrient-dense foods, formerly our staples, are tolerated as side-dishes. Taste, the most primitive of our senses, over the eons existed for our survival (as all the other senses), that is, to deselect plants sufficiently bitter as likely toxic or non-digestible. With the expansion of our brain capacity, taste was joined by higher brain regions' appreciation of flavor. The result is a demand for flavorful energy-dense foods. Every meal experience must "taste good". Dietary patterns based on such flavorful energy-dense foods has lead to chronic inflammatory states with high morbidly and mortality in the Western world. This book suggests a return to our true ancestral dietary patterns, supplemented by what is known from the latest scientific research concerning nutritional health. It is clear that we have evolved to be quite versatile eaters and while we can eat a variety of foods, a whole-food varied plant-based diet is best for our long-term survival as healthy and happy primates. Following the high nutrient density to energy density ratio, we recommend a dietary emphasis on green vegetables, particularly leaves, followed by all colors of vegetables, beans/legumes, then underground storage organs followed by a modicum of grains, nuts, and seeds. Personal opinions have been kept to a minimum. Most of the information presented herein is from recent peer reviewed scientific sources. For improved readability, these have been collected at the end of the book for each chapter section and subsection.

In 1789, Horace Walpole defined serendipity as "making discoveries by accident"; it was through acceptance of this inherent chaos that some of history's most influential advances were made, such as Alfred Nobel and dynamite, Marie Curie and radium, and Alexander Fleming and penicillin. Usually chaotic-serendipitous observations are either not recognized by hypothesis-driven researchers or, if observed, rejected by them. Fortunately, the Naval Blood Research Laboratory (NBRL) has been able to embrace important chaotic and serendipitous observations that were critical to the productivity of the laboratory. As former director of the NBRL, C. Robert Valeri, MD, spent forty-five years exploring hematocrit, bleeding time, and nonsurgical blood loss, as well as other blood-related advances used to treat military and civilian personnel. In this volume, he reviews those advances and recalls his time at the NBRL.

The Second Creation: Genetic Engineering of Man

It has been said that no new technology has ever gone unused. Clearly, the new technology of genetic engineering will be no exception. Already it is being utilized to change the genetic blueprint of bacteria, plants and some animals, and every advance is scrutinized for possible application in man. This new science is changing forever the way we think of life, not just at the molecular level, but at all levels of organization. The intent of this book is to explore, in the format of a novel, the choices, as well as the lack of choice, that are presented by this exceptional biotechnology. As genetic engineering matures over the next years and decades, it will become feasible to engineer the genes of future generations of mankind with ever-increasing precision. While previous seminal advances in technology such as written language, mathematics, electricity, manned flight, nuclear energy, and the computer have all given man astounding and powerful new tools, it is genetic engineering that will give man, for the first time, the tools to redesign man himself.Despite the extraordinarily high stakes, recognized in the National Institutes of Health's decision to publicly disseminate proposals for scientific research in this area, the national debate has, to this point, been limited and unfocused. It is hoped that this book will help inform members of the general public of the nature of genetic engineering and of its potential and probable uses so that the societal decisions, which eventually must be made, can be based on reason and understanding, and result in the greatest possible good.
