Documentation in early childhood education is typically seen as a means to enhance the quality of care and education, and as a way to take account of the child’s view. Assessment and Documentation in Early Childhood Education considers the increasing trend towards systematic child documentation especially in early childhood institutions. The authors present ways in which assessment and evaluation is done sometimes explicitly but more often implicitly in these practices, and explore its means, aims, forms, and functions. They also examine the rationalities of child documentation from the perspective of professional practice and professionalism and suggest that documentation and assessment practices can weaken and constrain but also empower and strengthen teachers, children and parents. Topics explored include: Different forms of documentation and assessment Documentation and listening to the children Dilemmas of assessment and documentation Participation by children Involvement of parentsThis timely book will be appealing for those studying in the field of early childhood education, teacher education, special education, general education, social work, counselling, psychology, sociology, childhood studies, and family studies.

A major new guide to mastering textile design that interweaves technical knowledge, artistic expression and storytelling. Interwoven: Exploring Materials and Structures is a joyous exploration of woven textile design. It dissects woven structures along with the fibres and yarns used to make them, giving exceptional insight into the world of fabrics. Interwoven outlines how the diverse history of textiles has been intertwined with human innovation from prehistoric twining to the invention of the binary code, through to today’s new material discoveries and urgent quest for sustainability. By investigating the past and present of textiles, and narrating their cross-cultural roles, meanings and influences, Interwoven illustrates how textiles have been used to tell human stories throughout the ages. The book introduces a new pedagogical method for woven textile design studies, inviting the reader to take a seat at the looms to weave their own stories. Detailed instructions for creating textiles, ranging from fibres and yarns to basic weaves, multi-layered constructions and digital jacquard design, are interspersed by emotionally rich, tactile textile stories by Aalto ARTS design students. The way this book interweaves technical knowledge, artistic expression and storytelling makes it a unique guide on the path to mastering textile design.

Pedagogical Opportunities of the Review Genre unleashes the pedagogical potential of the review genre, reframing the act of reviewing of cultural products as a communicative practice from a pedagogical perspective.Negotiating between traditions of journalism and media studies and pedagogy, the author presents a novel approach that will increase the readers’ understanding of an activity that is on the increase in an era where 'everyone can be a critic'. She identifies, describes, and develops genre-based pedagogies in formal, non-formal, and informal contexts of learning and teaching, in order to recontextualize the review as a form of learning and rethink of its potential as an inclusive, engaging, and a transformative critical cultural practice. This innovative and truly interdisciplinary study will interest students and researchers in the areas of media literacy, digital media, media and communication studies, cultural studies, sociology of arts, and pedagogical studies – in particular, cultural journalism and criticism, audience studies, cultural production, and cultural mediation, as well as critical media pedagogy and literacy studies.

Journalists as Media Educators: Pedagogies of Journalism Literacy Education
In this book, Maarit Jaakkola offers a theoretically-rich and ambitious approach to journalistic media education, contributing to ongoing academic discussions on the pedagogical opportunities of journalistic production by defining the concept, placing it in the context of established best practices of newswork and industry stakeholder collaborations in media organizations, and envisioning it as a future paradigm for audience engagement and development. Building on existing traditions and research on newsroom-school collaborations, media and news literacy movements, and strategic communication for media and cultural organizations, Jaakkola expands upon the concept of journalistic media education in order to develop the public pedagogies carried out by news organizations and stakeholders. Jaakkola discusses the potentials and challenges of pedagogical activities as part of news media organizations' strategic endeavors, conceptualized as inclusive boundary work.

This book examines how ordinary users review cultural products online, ranging from books to films and other art objects to consumer products. The book maps different communities—in institutional and non-institutional settings—which intersect with the genre of review, especially in the social web where reviewing is conducted on platforms such as Instagram, YouTube and Vimeo. The book, drawing on the key concepts of cultural intermediation, platformized cultural production and post-professionalism, looks at user-generated content in lifestyle communities beyond the binary of professional and amateur production.

Marttinansaari on Maarit Turtiaisen kolmas romaani. Punainen paasto (WSOY) ilmestyi 2012, Eilisen seitit 2015 (Compania Comder).
