In his wry yet raucous sequel to "Hadley," Nick Macfie reaches into the darkest recesses of the displaced Englishman's mind to weave a plot consisting of preposterous circumstances and humorous dialogue executed with laser-like precision. An English girl with a Chinese father gets caught up in an illegal floating casino. A benevolent gangster kills a dodgy dealer with a bow and arrow. It's Christmas in Hong Kong and journalist Hadley Arnold, king of the cynical hacks, is in trouble again. To read of Hadley's seedy adventures is to experience the bawdiest corners of Hong Kong with both derision and delight.

This concise account of the life and career of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk (1881--1938), the formidable "founder of modern Turkey", offers a substantial revaluation of a key figure in modern history, and also an introduction to the Turkish republic itself. It is a timely study with Turkey again at the centre of international attention, as Islamic fundamentalists challenge many of Atatürk's westernising and secularizing reforms, and as the regional aftershocks of the Soviet collapse reopen profound questions about Turkey's nature, role and relationships Atatürk had sought to settle for good.

The collapse of the Ottoman Empire is a key event in the shaping of our own times. From its ruins rose a whole map of new countries including Turkey, Iraq, Syria, Lebanon, Jordan, Saudi Arabia and the perennially troubled area of Palestine as well as the Balkan lands - states which were to remain flashpoints of international tension. This thoughtful and lucid volume considers the reasons for the end of the Ottoman Empire; explains the course of it; and examines the aftermath.

At a crucial moment in the history of relations of East and West, Orient and Occident, Christianity and Islam, Orientalism provides a timely account of the subject and the debate. In the 1960s and 1970s a powerful assault was launched on 'orientalism', led by Edward Said. The debate ranged far beyond the traditional limits of 'dry-as-dust' orientalism, involving questions concerning the nature of identity, the nature of imperialism, Islamophobia, myth, Arabism, racialism, intercultural relations and feminism.Charting the history of the vigorous debate about the nature of orientalism, this timely account revisits the arguments and surveys the case studies inspired by that debate.

A child's eye account of life on The Glebe, Hobart, post-World War Two. My parents were just getting re-acquainted after war-time separation, and my mother had just lost her own mother. She had moved away from her close-knit relatives while her own family kept growing. For a small boy, running free on The Domain was a relief from his, at times, difficult and violent father who was suffering trauma from his Army service in New Guinea. It was a refuge and an education.

Angelita has always lived a protected life in a small mountain village in Andalucia. On reaching adolescence, angered by hostile gossip about her father and restrictions on visiting him in Madrid, she commits a crime against the community she has grown up within. She is imprisoned, but escapes by killing a guard and flees the village. She then must undertake a dangerous journey, dressed as a boy, to find her way to Madrid and join her father. In Madrid, she joins a group of young people, including members of the International Brigade against Franco, to protest the killings and incarcerations of anyone opposed to the government. The denial of rights and justice for women are central to her cause. Using her gifts of poetry and song, she holds illicit performances throughout Madrid to bring to her cause those in power who are disillusioned by government. The risks are many. Survival depends on the trust of her friends, luck, and ultimately, love.
