Contributors to Women and Judaism describe the many ways in which women are claiming a place in and changing the face of this ancient religion.“Women and Judaism,” the editor writes, “carries an intention to do more than bring the reader new ideas to ponder. For Jewish women, it’s a charge to claim and re-claim their rightful place in their tradition … For non-Jewish sisters, we hope that it encourages you to bring change in your traditions as you learn of our effort to be counted as full members of an ancient spiritual community.”In this all-encompassing exploration of Judaism for the modern woman, readers attend the first the Bat Mitzvah 70 years ago, hear an imagined response of biblical mothers asked to give up their children, and learn how each holiday contains an ecological message. Readers explore the power of women within a patriarchal tradition, including the story of the first woman rabbi. Readers see demonstrations of how women keep body, mind, and spirit alive, read a new view of biblical women as heroic role models, and enter the memory of women Holocaust survivors. Some contributors write about sexuality, power, and vulnerability, while others present the newest women’s rituals, including Rosh Hodesh and mikveh. An introduction by Rabbi Malka DruckerSuggestions for further reading

They struggled to clear a new path for women; these are the stories of modern spiritual pioneers. "I imagine this book as a dinner party where women have eagerly gathered for a conversation about being a woman, a person of faith, and a leader. While some know each other, many do not, but it doesn’t matter. Listening to them in ensemble reveals that all their differences are less important than how much they share as women of faith. Since community and interconnection tend to be feminine traits, sisterhood is important, and I hope that upon finishing the book, the reader may feel that she or he has found a teacher that offers a new way to see women and the Divine." —from the Introduction There is an ancient mystical legend that the Bible was written with black fire on white fire. Now, we can only read the black fire (the letters), but someday we might be able to see the white fire. Today, with their voices and their presence growing ever stronger, women spiritual leaders in America are like white fire, and we can see the previously untapped power of female leadership. This remarkable book gives voice and image to the too often invisible, ignored, or overlooked narrative of women’s spiritual leadership in America today. Revealed through insightful interviews and compelling photographic portraits, the women represent both diversity and sisterhood. They offer us new ways of relating to each other, and the Divine.

A cutting-edge blend of contemporary design and art informs the work of architecture s enfant terrible. This first book on his firm presents an array of immersive spaces for living and working that walk the edge of practicality and imagination. Best known for UNESCO s Cop22 in Marrakech and the French Embassy extension in Vienna, as well as his daring 'guerrilla architecture,' such as Bow-House made from scaffolding and repurposed doors and windows in Holland, architect, urbanist, author, and former graffiti artist Stephane Malka is at the forefront of the architectural avant-garde. Malka s work blends art and architecture from a humanist perspective informed by the designer s intention to create work that is positive and sustainable. His practice, based in Paris and in Los Angeles, realizes homes, offices, art installations, and stage designs with the idea that we ought always to rethink our typical notions and challenge established conventions. This results in surprising places where there is an intermingling of dreams and pragmatism, the baroque and minimalism, ecology and sophistication. The book, an expression of Malka s daring aesthetic and conscientious ethos, features his groundbreaking exploration of contemporary housing. Included are his cliffside Mugu House, in Malibu, California, a dramatic expression of dwelling meets mountain in a delicate tracery of slatted wood and glass. Beyond freestanding structures, showcased as well are Studio Malka s interventions and transformations of existing architecture and the exploration and development of green building and design, embracing the adaptation and reuse of existing structures and materials a dazzling expression of artistry and innovation that opens its doors and windows on the future.

She Is Hope. She Is the Leader. She Is the Messiah. She Is History. She Is Fake. The video artist Yael Bartana (b. Kfar Yehezkel, Israel, 1970; lives and works in Amsterdam and Berlin) makes work that explores the visual language of identity and the politics of commemoration. The critical scrutiny of collective expectations of political or religious salvation is a central concern in her art. In the video installation Malka Germania--Hebrew for "Queen Germany"--Bartana creates alternative realities from the German-Jewish past and present that bring scenes of the collective unconscious to light. The publication follows the epiphany of Malka Germania, a female redeemer figure, in five chapters whose layout is modeled on that of the Talmud, the central text in Rabbinical Judaism. This organization reflects the polyphonic complexity, rich nuance, and ambivalence that the work casts into visuals and underscores that there is no simple answer. The book includes an interview with the artist and contributions by Sami Berdugo, Christina von Braun, Michael Brenner, Max Czollek, and others. It is published on occasion of the exhibition Yael Bartana--Redemption Now at the Jewish Museum Berlin.
