How children acquire competence in verb placement in languages in which verb placement in matrix clauses does not coincide with that in embedded clauses is not well understood. Verb-Second languages like German and Dutch display the verb-final pattern in embedded clauses, which can be confusing for a developing child. This book addresses this problem in the context of Swiss German, itself a Germanic dialect. Numerous examples are given of natural language produced by two children who were consistently followed between the ages of 4 and 6. Unexpectedly, since previous literature has suggested that children master verb placement very early in their linguistic development, these children move the verb in any type of embedded clause, leading to many verb-placement errors. After introducing the problem and describing the data in detail, a technical analysis is developed in terms of a minimally split-CP, which is rather successful in accounting for these data. The book should interest advanced students and researchers in both language acquisition and syntax.

In the 7th century the political and economic situation of Visigothic Spain seemed to grow ever worse, yet it was at this time that there was established a Christian culture that lasted up to the 11th century. This culture forms the subject of the present volume and was the product, the author holds, of the survival of classical learning, on the one hand, and, on the other, the needs of a sustained programme of evangelisation led by both bishops and monks. Of the articles here, one set focuses on monastic life and the influence on this of Isidore of Seville; a second group examines the liturgical texts of the period, one of the key means of propagating the Christian faith amongst an often illiterate population. The questions of language and literacy, finally, form the subject of two specific studies on the availability of books in post-Visigothic Spain, and on a set of early medieval Latin texts scratched on slate. La situation politique de l’Espagne visigothe au 7e siècle semblait aller de mal en pire. C’est cependant à cette époque que s’établissait une culture chrétienne qui allait durer jusqu’au 11e siècle. Cette culture forme le sujet du présent volume et, selon l’auteur, était le resultat du maintient du savoir antique d’une part, et d’autre, du besoin éprouvé d’un programme d’évangélisation soutenu et mené par les evêques, ainsi que par les moines. If a person wanted to start a new life, away from a busy world full of big cities and dense population centers, Tierra del Fuego seemed like the ideal place to go. According to the map, an archipelago made up of sparsely populated islands tucked away into a remote corner of the planet: it offered solitude and lots of it. That and seagulls, seals, and no end of empty gravel beaches. Looking inland, the promise of an empty land with mountains in the distance; looking out to sea, nothing but water. Segundino decides to go there. He was looking for solitude, for time to be alone, for time to contemplate life and perhaps make a new start. That, however, was not how things worked out. Actually, nothing worked out the way he intended, but he's not one bit sorry. His life there takes a different turn and he realizes that no amount of planning can overcome destiny. In the process, he learns about Tierra del Fuego, the land and its people, and what makes a strong community. To say more is to tell the story, but far from getting himself marooned in a deserted island, as was his original intention, he finds himself growing fond of the people around him, not to mention the land, and before he realizes it, he's there to stay. The derivation of formulas in solving electrical line faults is made simpler by just following the directions of the flow of currents and the voltage paths indicated in the modified circuit diagrams. Another method is by using graphically the Phasor A and J Diagram which include both the values of complex numbers in rectangular and polar forms. The equivalent single phase and sequence network diagrams are drawn indicating the three lines and the neutral line instead of a single line only. Shown alongside fault currents are the fault voltages for easier analysis and comparison between the two results.Also explained are how the symmetrical sequence network and phasor (vector) diagrams are used to determine the possible consequences of the three basic types of electrical line faults such as Short-Circuit Faults, Open-Circuit Faults, and the Simultaneous Faults.Different types of faults create different magnitudes of fault currents. Any part of the equipment must be quickly disconnected or removed from the power source in case of short-circuits. The ratings and settings of protection devices must also deal with the consequences of fault currents. Setting a circuit breaker beyond its rated interrupting time, that is to open a faulted circuit breaker at high speed (within the first half or up to one cycle on a high current fault), will create a significant hazard. Circuit breakers have to be adjusted to trip at a lower speed for them to interrupt the flow of fault current within their interrupting capacity. For higher speed requirement, the ampere rating of the circuit breaker has to be bigger than the available fault current on a circuit.
