The tragic murder of Wall Street Journal reporter Daniel Pearl is well known. Why he was in Karachi; how he saw his role as an international journalist; why he was singled out for kidnapping; and where the incredible search effort led - are the subject of Mariane Pearl's book.A journalist in her own right, Mariane is, as was her husband, profoundly committed to the idea that a more informed public makes for a better world, and to the idea that risks are taken to uncover a story. A superb writer, she presents a truly illuminating tale - including her own crucial role in the investigative team, where she was responsible for negotiating unprecedented cooperation between the FBI and Pakistani intelligence and able to forge alliances with an array of people, from the Karachi chief of police to George Bush.A Mighty Heart is an extraordinary book - a fitting tribute to a dedicated reporter and a profound and heartbreaking love story.

My Pearls in Shanghai: A Memoir

My Pearls in Shanghai: A Memoir

Marianne Song

My Pearls in Shanghai tells the beautiful story of author's journey from a young adult struggling to find her path to a grown, successful woman who has learned who she is. The way she explores her experiences and memories to correlate with social issues corroborate her viewpoint that arts can be far away from reality. Her education in Switzerland and China expanded her capacity of cultural tolerance arising from different ethnics. A variety of people she met, talked to, and shared her feelings with in two countries were well-melt into her memoir. The core value of Song's essays lies in how to find one's uniqueness instead of being dissolved in the voice of others. This self- discovery journey brought the conclusion that human desire is the essence of the soul, which could give the life purpose. Her memoir covers not only the cultural and artistic experience she discovered in Shanghai but also what the meaningful life is all about. Each chapter in this memoir deals with empirical philosophy.

A Woman’s Voice in Baroque Music: Mariane von Ziegler and J.S. Bach
At the end of his second year in Leipzig, J.S. Bach composed nine sacred cantatas to texts by Leipzig poet Mariane von Ziegler (1695-1760). Despite the fact that these cantatas are Bach's only compositions to texts by a female poet, the works have been largely ignored in the Bach literature. Ziegler was Germany's first female poet laureate, and the book highlights her significance in early eighteenth-century Germany and her commitment to advancing women's rights of self-expression. Peters enriches and enlivens the account with extracts from Ziegler's four published volumes of poetry and prose, and analyses her approach to cantata text composition by arguing that her distinctive conception of the cantata as a genre encouraged Bach's creative musical realizations. In considering Bach's settings of Ziegler's texts, Peters argues that Bach was here pursuing a number of compositional procedures not common in his other sacred cantatas, including experimentation with the order of movements within a cantata, with formal considerations in arias and recitatives, and with the use of instruments, as well as innovative approaches to Vox Christi texts and to texts dealing with speech and silence. A Woman's Voice in Baroque Music is the first book to deal in depth with issues of women in music in relation to Bach, and one of the few comprehensive studies of a specific repertory of Bach's sacred cantatas. It therefore provides a significant new perspective on both Ziegler as poet and cantata librettist and Bach as cantata composer.
