The Culture of Women in Tech

The Culture of Women in Tech

Mariann Hardey

nidottu
This book offers a critical analysis of the contemporary and global tech culture and exposes the gender bias of masculine tech ideology and stereotypes. Is the place of ‘women in tech’ immovable from masculine leadership practices? And what are the cultural, social, personal and economic consequences of gender as a point of difference in the context of work in the tech sector? Mariann Hardey examines the rise of entrepreneurial work and leadership, the contemporary urban setting of global tech work, and specifically women’s place in tech clusters. The book engages with attempts by women to establish and then sustain their professional status and long-term careers, despite predatory social media trolling and inappropriate sexualized behaviour. Based on a series of commentaries from research undertaken by the author about workers located within ‘tech cities’ in the UK, USA and East Asia regions, the work exposes the serious problem of women’s position in the industry. While this study continues to be critical of the conceits of masculine tech ideology, prejudices and stereotypes, the work contributes to recent calls to help find solutions and ways forward.

Self-tracking is a rapidly growing area of study and will play an important role in the future of how we understand health change and responsibility. Understanding the personal and social dimensions of tracking within households improves our understanding of health consumption and knowledge, particularly during significant global crises. Ignoring the household context of health or focusing solely on individual tracking behaviour is no longer an option. Household Self-Tracking During a Global Health Crisis provides a comprehensive and straightforward account of deeper health narratives managed through data tracking within households formed during a global health crisis. The book examines the contextual, personal, and social factors surrounding health tracking, including the commercialization of Covid19 health tracking, public data tracking, and health-surveillance issues, from a social science perspective. Inequalities in health, as well as expanded concepts of fitness and illness management, are highlighted as part of a significant shift in how we understand and integrate home health regimes, and how this is made possible by the incorporation of household biometric data tracking. Household Self-Tracking During a Global Health Crisis will assist researchers interested in self-tracking and health technologies, as well as postgraduate students studying psychology, medicine, social science, and business. Hardey explores several personal insights as well as research which may be unfamiliar to some social scientists, helping situate new perspectives and understanding.

A network analysis that ignores social harm is merely a technical exercise. A social critique that ignores the network is incomplete. Navigating the Web of Disinformation closes this critical gap. Mariann Hardey and Wasim Ahmed offer a vital socio-technical examination of digital falsehoods, using Social Network Analysis (SNA) to connect the mechanics of digital diffusion to their real-world consequences. The result is a powerful visual and analytical account of how digital manipulation directly fuels social instability. As a critical contribution to the field, this book equips researchers and policymakers with a practical method to not only identify false information but to understand its social impact, proposing grounded solutions to defend the integrity of public discourse. A vital contribution to the field, this publication equips policymakers, researchers, and practitioners with the insights needed to mitigate the spread of false information.

Radiography is an integral part of paediatric health care. It is frequently requested to assist in the diagnosis, management and treatment of childhood disease and illness. Accurate interpretation of paediatric radiographs can depend entirely on the quality of images produced by the radiographer, yet there are few books available on this crucial aspect of radiographic practice. Paediatric Radiography fills a gap. It explores radiographic practice within the context of the modern health service and focuses on how our knowledge and understanding of paediatric growth, development and illness can inform and influence radiographic procedures. It includes detailed coverage of specific paediatric techniques and good practice models, including the role of multi-modality imaging, and looks specifically at radiation protection, the chest and upper airways, the abdomen, neonatal radiography, trauma, orthopaedics, and non-accidental injury.

This foundational overview of simulation for nurse educators addresses the pressing demand for a comprehensive and up-to-date resource for nurse educators teaching with simulation in the ever-evolving landscape of nursing education. The competencies outlined by the Canadian Association of Schools of Nursing/Canadian Nurse Educators Institute (CASN/CNEI) for Simulation Nurse Educators serve as a guiding framework in this text for the exploration of the essential elements of simulation-based nursing education. These competencies encompass a wide spectrum of skills and knowledge areas that are necessary for nurse educators engaged in simulation-based pedagogy. This text was created as an adjunct to the four modules of the Canadian Certified Simulation Nurse Educator (CCSNE) program and to provide nurse educators across Canada with updated information and resources to support them in incorporating innovative teaching methodologies into their teaching skill sets. The CCSNE program was developed to foster excellence in nursing education by providing faculty development in simulation-based pedagogy, practices, and technologies that follow the Healthcare Simulation Standards of Best Practice TM (HSSOBP). Recognizing the diversity of expertise among nurse educators in simulation-based pedagogy, this text offers a robust starting point for those seeking to enhance their teaching skills in simulation. There is a broad complement of practice learning needs for moving nursing education forward in the area of simulation-based pedagogy, and this text provides a foundation and starting point for learning.

Afstemningsprocesser i psykoterapi 4.

Why do we teach information literacy? This book argues that the main purpose of information literacy teaching in higher education is to enhance student learning. With the impact of new technologies, a proliferation of information sources and a change in the student demography, information literacy has become increasingly important in academia. Also, students that know how to learn have a better chance of adapting their learning strategies to the demands of higher education, and thus completing their degree. The authors discuss the various aspects of how academic integrity and information literacy are linked to learning, and provide examples on how our theories can be put into practice. The book also provides insight on the normative side of higher education, namely academic formation and the personal development process of students. The cognitive aspects of the transition to higher education, including learning strategies and critical thinking, are explored; and finally the book asks how information literacy teaching in higher education might be improved to help students meet contemporary challenges.

The building of human towers (castells) is a centuries-old traditional sport where hundreds of men, women, and children gather in Catalan squares to create breathtaking edifices through a feat of collective athleticism. The result is a great spectacle of effort and overcoming, tension and release. Catalonia's Human Towers is an ethnographic look at the thriving castells practice—a symbol of Catalan cultural heritage and identity amid debates around national autonomy and secession from Spain. While the main function of building castells is to grow community through a low-cost, intergenerational, and inclusive leisure activity, Mariann Vaczi reveals how this unique sport also provides a social base, image, and vocabulary for the independence movement. Highlighting the intersection of folklore, performance, and sport, Catalonia's Human Towers captures the subtle processes by which the body becomes politicized and ideology becomes embodied, with all the desires, risks and precarities of collective constructions.
