Vuosi 1923. Yhdeksänvuotias Iita auttaa piikana työskentelevää äitiään maatalon askareissa. Iitan isä on menehtynyt sisällissodan myrskyissä ja Iita miettii, mitä se tarkoittaa, kun koulussa häntä kutsutaan punikin pennuksi.
