A Century of Asia Minor Refugees in Greece

A Century of Asia Minor Refugees in Greece

Marilena Anastasopoulou

This book is a comparative--intergenerational and interregional--history of Asia Minor memories and identities of forced displacement that examines the multilayered relationship between contemporary attitudes and refugee past. In light of the centenary of the Asia Minor population transfer and the current migration and refugee crises, this study explores refugee memories and identities of expulsion, their intergenerational transmission, and the way that people with these memories think about subsequent migrations. While focusing on the case of Greece, the questions that this book addresses are: How have memories of the 192224 forced displacement changed over time from one generation to the next? How do people with these memories and identities think about subsequent migration? Following a regional history approach and an oral history approach, this study draws upon literature from several disciplines and rests upon oral testimony. Specifically, it employs a methodology of collecting primary sources using oral testimonies (262 life history interviews) and archival evidence (5000 oral testimonies) based on three regional case studies, namely the borderland island of Lesvos, Central Macedonia in northern Greece, and Attica. This book argues that refugee identity is a capacious and dynamic platform of ongoing understanding as well as a limited space of domination and competition. Elucidating the attitudes of refugee descendants and unfolding key patterns about the complex role of refugee memory and identity, it brings together the intersection of three interlocking elements: time (refugee generations), place (refugee locations), and subsequent migration (waves of other migrations). In short, A Century of Asia Minor Refugees in Greece sheds light on the convoluted relationship between contemporary attitudes and refugee past, providing a nuanced history of the 1922-24 memories and identities of forced displacement. Cyprus Before 1974

Focusing on the period from September 1964, when Senor Galo Lasso Plaza assumed the UN mediatory role, to the coup d’etat and the Turkish invasion ten years later, Cyprus Before 1974 seeks to unpick the internal conflicts which led to the failure of the peace process in Cyprus. Marilena Varnava studies three phases: Plaza’s mediation of 1964-1965; the negotiating impasse on the island during the period 1965-1967; and finally the inter-communal talks of 1968-1974. Varnava argues persuasively that each of these successive phases, particularly the latter two, were inextricably tied to political and social developments within the two main communities on the island itself. In particular, Cyprus before 1974 focuses on the events of 1968 - when the Greek-Cypriot political leadership, and the President of the Republic of Cyprus Archbishop Makarios III, failed to grasp the nature of the changes within the island’s post-independence arena. Recurrent attempts within both communities during the talks of that year to create faits accomplis favourable to their own bargaining positions served to heighten the barriers to a stable and peaceful outcome. This study enlarges our understanding of the underlying issues which the Turkish invasion of 1974 were to throw into stark relief and is essential reading for all those who study the Cyprus problem and conflict resolution.

Industrial Explosives and their Applications for Rock Excavation focuses on applications of industrial explosives in civil and mining engineering works. Explosives and their actions are explained in terms of basics, principles, and related chemistry. Explosives and initiation devices are described, including their characteristics, geometry, and timing aspects of the blast design. Designing blasts for rock excavation works is explained, including devices for obtaining large-sized blocks, construction of yards, and excavation of big foundations. Finally, criteria for the mitigation of the associated seismic disturbances are summarized. The book:provides an updated vision of industrial explosives, including the best technical advice for rock excavation;contains harmonized preliminary modules aimed at introducing basic concepts of chemistry and physics applied to the drilling and blasting technique;defines balanced mix of theory capable of providing skills to design an efficient blasting;covers excavation problems from different points of view and in different contexts; andaddresses issues of drilling and loading blast-holes.Industrial Explosives and their Applications for Rock Excavation is aimed at graduate students, researchers, and professionals in mining engineering and explosives technology.
Assembling the Archipelago: Heritage in Energy Transitions and Climate Action
This book explores the potential of heritage to enact sustainable human-environment relationships across geographical differences. It does so by traveling to four archipelagos: the Wadden Islands in the Netherlands, the Cyclades in Greece, Shetland in Scotland, and the Aeolian Islands in Italy. In the face of planetary socioenvironmental crises, the reliance on sustainable development strategies—including the energy transition—on technocratic, top-down solutions fails to counterbalance global agendas of extraction and growth and address environmental injustices in ‘peripheral’ places. This book stresses the need to ‘think small,’ arguing that seeds for meaningful change exist in such places and the geographically and historically situated relationships between people and environments. Islands, interconnected yet autonomous places with unique histories, are good places to start. In four archipelagoes, frictions produced both by climate change and climate mitigation -the fragile consensus around a solar park in the Wadden Sea, conflicts around wind turbine towers in the Aegean, experiments with the tides in Shetland, and volcanic episodes in the Aeolian-come in dialogue with the learning potential of their environmental and cultural heritage. The counterposing of these stories renegotiates established discourses of heritage and sustainability and the associated courses of action in policy and planning. This valuable contribution will resonate with academics, students, policymakers and activists in heritage studies, environmental humanities, landscape studies, science and technology studies, and sustainability. Readers are invited to participate in the life and troubles of four island landscapes, and to think along on emergent, archipelagic claims towards sustainable and just futures.

Intangible Heritage and Participation examines participation as an intellectual and operational frame in safeguarding intangible heritage.Including case studies from the Netherlands, Belgium, Aotearoa New Zealand, Greece, Peru, Britain, Denmark, Sweden and Japan, the book provides an analysis of safeguarding as a museological framework and further investigates safeguarding practices in participatory research, memory-work and cultural transmission. Drawing on conversations about ‘the tyranny of participation’, the book looks into the complexities of participatory projects on the ground, from community research and collecting to the mapping of Indigenous values in environmental conservation and processes of active remembering of ‘difficult intangible heritage’ of forced migration, political violence and mental illness. Cautioning against the uncritical adoption of participation as a universal ethical discourse, Alivizatou argues that the ethics of cosmopolitanism should guide safeguarding practices at an international level.Intangible Heritage and Participation offers an original approach to thinking about and working with intangible heritage and, as such, should be essential reading for academics, researchers and students in, among others, the fields of cultural heritage studies, museology, anthropology and cultural development. It should also be of interest to heritage and museum professionals and anyone else interested in cultural heritage theory and practice.

Encountering Europe on British Stages

Encountering Europe on British Stages

Forty years after Britain's entry to the European Economic Community, the country's political and cultural landscapes are still marked by scepticism or resistance to 'continental' Europe. Encountering Europe on British Stages is the first book-length study of the ways in which British theatre and performance have engaged with Europe and European identities since the end of the Cold War. The book explores images and ideas of Europe and Europeanness as produced on British stages and studies the reactions to works that have negotiated Europe, its past and present, its peoples and their experiences. It also investigates the determining effects of British and European cultural policies and structures. What can we learn from the British performing arts scene of the last quarter-century about what Europe, as a cultural construct and political formation, means for Britain today? It considers the work of dramatists and theatre companies which engaged with the emerging reality of the 'New' Europe in the 1990s: including Howard Barker, Howard Brenton, Caryl Churchill, David Edgar, David Greig, Sarah Kane, Harold Pinter and companies Complicite and Suspect Culture. Against a changing context that covers the narratives of expansion and utopian feelings at the turn of the millennium; the 'failure' of multiculturalism; the transformations precipitated by the global recession in 2008 and the 'Eurozone crisis'; the migration crisis and the referendum on Britain's European Union membership, the work of playwrights including Mark Ravenhill, Simon Stephens, Zinnie Harris, Tena Stivicic, Caire Bayley and Anders Lustgarten is examined.

Peace and tranquility on the island of Aster, home to both humans and 'merfolk', has long been broken by a devastating phenomenon, recurring every five years. A storm including gusting winds and huge waves mysteriously appeared and eradicated much of the population. The misunderstandings, suspicion and hate born of this disaster have torn the two races apart, and the peace loving merfolk are now in a never-ending struggle to prove their innocence and restore peace to the island. On the human side, things are even worse; under the tyranny of cruel king Orestis, the people suffer and all their king cares for is vengeance against the "fish," as he spitefully calls them, executing merfolk after merfolk for just being near his lands. Secrets, intense emotions and strange phenomena will upset their lives forever.
