With their widespread use in the Global South, mobile phones are attracting growing interest from international aid actors and local authorities alike, who are positioning mobile technology as a growth driver and a solution to many social problems. Initiated by giants of the digital industry, these policies are reviving old questions about technological development, the relationship between the market sector and States, and the role of technology in the inequalities between the Global North and Global South. Through a multi-sited ethnography on maternal care in Ghana and India, this Element provides a first-hand look at initiatives that promise to improve poor women's health in the Global South through the use of mobile phones; a field known as Mobile Health or mHealth. Attentive to the way in which these technical objects modify power relations at both international and local levels, this Element also discusses how mHealth transforms care practices and healthcare.

Most people know General Al Gray as the 29th Commandant of the Marine Corps. His achievements as a transformational Commandant are legendary within the Marine Corps and the military services. Volume 1 of the "Al Gray, Marine" series covered his time as an enlisted Marine and junior officer up through his 1967 promotion to Lieutenant Colonel. In Volume 2, Scott Laidig tells us the story of a unique, charismatic Marine during his time as a senior field grade officer. From establishing innovative intelligence operations in Vietnam, to command of infantry units in the challenging times of the 1970s, through his leadership during the evacuation of Saigon in 1975, Al Gray's story is exceptional. In many ways, the accomplishments of Al Gray rival those that he carried out as a General Officer or even as Commandant. In this book, the author tells the remarkable story of Al Gray, Marine. Volume 1 of "Al Gray, Marine" won the Marine Corps Heritage Foundation's esteemed Colonel Joseph Alexander Prize for Best Biography of the Year for 2014 Following in that tradition, Volume 2 offers significant insights into General Gray's activities and many accomplishments as a senior field grade officer.

Una Finestra Sul Mare... Marine...

Danny joined the Marines in 1967 and saw some of the worst fighting of the Vietnam War. He was continually bombarded by the enemy, never knowing if he would live or die. When his best friend was brutally murdered, he became angry, depressed, and numb. The only thing that could make him feel alive again was killing. He came home from the war with a bad case of PTSD and couldn't adapt to normal life. To feed his need for killing, he became a hitman for a biker gang. To justify the murders, he developed his own "Samurai Code." He admired the Warrior's Code of the Samurai. By following his personal code, he was fine. Then one day he broke his code...and it broke him. Based on a real events, this is Danny's story. The book also contains psychological insight by Dr. Carlisle. Book three in the Development of the Violent Mind series. Warning: the accuracy of the depictions in this book may trigger some people with PTSD.

The Lebanese photographer Marie al-Khazen seized every opportunity to use her camera during the years that she was active between 1920 and 1940. She not only documented her travels around tourist sites in Lebanon but also sought creative experimentation with her camera by staging scenes, manipulating shadows, and superimposing negatives to produce different effects in her prints. Within her photographs, bedouins and European friends, peasants and landlords, men and women comfortably share the same space. Her photographs include an intriguing collection portraying her family and friends living their everyday lives in 1920s and ‘30s Zgharta, a village in the north of Lebanon.Yasmine Nachabe Taan explores these photographs, emphasizing the ways in which notions of gender and class are inscribed within them and revealing how they are charged with symbols of women’s emancipation to today's viewers, through women’s presence as individuals, separate from family restrictions of that time. Images in which women are depicted smoking cigarettes, driving cars, riding horses, and accompanying men on hunting trips counteract the common ways in which women were portrayed in contemporary Lebanon.
