Andr P zard (1893-1984) est reconnu pour tre l'un des plus grands italianistes du vingti me si cle: il a traduit, lui seul, les OEuvres compl tes de Dante et a activement contribu au d veloppement et la r ception de l'italianisme en France. En marge de ses activit s professionnelles et universitaires, du lyc e d'Avignon au Coll ge de France, les archives mettent en vidence qu'il tait aussi un crivain et ce, dans sa pratique personnelle quotidienne tout au long de sa vie. Rescap de la Grande Guerre, le jeune homme va tenir, de 1919 1921, en arrivant Avignon o il va occuper son premier poste d'enseignant, un journal personnel dans lequel il manifeste sa progressive r adaptation la vie civile. Quelle trace Andr P zard a-t-il voulu laisser en r digeant le Journal d'Avignon ? Quelle fonction lui assignait-il au quotidien ? Si le jeune diariste ne fait jamais clairement tat d'un projet de publication de son contenu, certaines lignes de force tendent nous convaincre que ce journal, au m me titre que l'ensemble de ses archives, assume une fonction de laboratoire dans lequel il va puiser les mat riaux et l'inspiration en vue d'un ou de plusieurs projets ditoriaux envisag s. Apr s avoir publi un premier t moignage de l'exp rience directe de la guerre, Nous autres Vauquois en 1919, Andr P zard comptait-il, terme, crire une deuxi me autobiographie ? Envisageait-il une production litt raire qui visait transmettre une exp rience personnelle ou un patrimoine culturel donn ? Le Journal d'Avignon qui atteste d'une criture aux multiples facettes n'a pas livr tous ses secrets. Nos recherches et nos analyses d montrent qu'Andr P zard n'a finalement pas pris la voie de l' criture officielle et n'a pas publi son journal avec les productions narratives qu'il contenait. Les activit s universitaires (et sa passion pour Dante) ont probablement rendu secondaire l'envie en P zard de devenir crivain.
