This book by Deputy Surveyor General of the State of Georgia is a result of the many requests that the department has had throughout the years for information on the location of Georgia's long-ago dead towns. Such requests come from people finding the name of a town on a post mark, old letter, tax records, censuses and other official documents, seeking to know the location of that community. Mr. Hemperley found that, without a master list of the old as well as new towns in Georgia, these questions could not readily be answered. Georgia has one of the richest and most interesting, legacy of town names of any state in the Union. This book covers over 8,500 places and the county in which they were or are located in.

Examining political advertisements, news coverage, ad watches and talk shows in Los Angeles, Boston, Winston-Salem, and Fargo/Moorhead, the authors chart the impact of different information environments on citizens and show how people developed images of candidates over the course of the campaign. The text also presents evidence that campaigns do matter, that citizens are active participants in the campaign process, and that their perceptions of a candidate's character is the central factor in the voting process. Although the focus is on the 1992 presidential race, the study is intended to contribute to understanding of campaigns in general, and show how election campaigns can play an important role in the long-term vitality of democracy.

The nonprofit sector is a vital component of our society and is allowed the greatest freedom to operate. The public understandably assumes that since nonprofit organizations are established to do good, the people who run nonprofits are altruistic, and the laws governing nonprofits have reflected this assumption. But as Marion Fremont-Smith argues, the rules that govern how nonprofits operate are inadequate, and the regulatory mechanisms designed to enforce the rules need improvement. Despite repeated instances of negligent management, self-interest at the expense of the charity, and outright fraud, nonprofits continue to receive minimal government regulation. Indeed, the transformation of the Irish image is a fascinating blend of political, cultural, racial, commercial, and social influences. The Green Space examines the variety of factors that contributed to remaking the Irish image from downtrodden and despised to universally acclaimed. To understand the forces that molded how people understand "Irish" is to see the matrix—the green space—that facilitated their interaction between the 1890s and 1960s. Marion R. Casey argues that, as "Irish" evolved between the mid-nineteenth and mid-twentieth centuries, a visual and rhetorical expanse for representing ethnicity was opened up in the process. The result, according to the experts, is an ignorant public, helpless targets of a one-way flow of carefully filtered and orchestrated communication. Common Knowledge shatters this pervasive myth. Reporting on a ground-breaking study, the authors reveal that our shared knowledge and evolving political beliefs are determined largely by how we actively reinterpret the images, fragments, and signals we find in the mass media. For their study, the authors analyzed coverage of 150 television and newspaper stories on five prominent issues--drugs, AIDS, South African apartheid, the Strategic Defense Initiative, and the stock market crash of October 1987. They tested audience responses of more than 1,600 people, and conducted in-depth interviews with a select sample. What emerges is a surprisingly complex picture of people actively and critically interpreting the news, making sense of even the most abstract issues in terms of their own lives, and finding political meaning in a sophisticated interplay of message, medium, and firsthand experience. At every turn, Common Knowledge refutes conventional wisdom.
