In this book, the contributions flow like a river across the Eurasian continent, branching out into all directions. The contributors engage in an exploration of experimental epistemic alliances, which operate as a way to learn and make new dialogic relations. The conflicts generated by ecological disaster, war, the global economy, identity politics, and the power structures of knowledge production and science here intertwine with shamanisms, rituals, magic, speculation, politics, and poetics. The trade conflicts that the EU has faced within the EU or WTO context demonstrate that the question of how to balance trade and other societal values in situations of uncertainty has not been solved by the regulatory model evolved by the EU in the aftermath of the BSE crisis – one which privileges processes of depoliticisation and scientification. This book addresses the current key dilemmas around science, law and the regulation of trade, both on a regime level and in the context of particular industrial sectors, e.g pharmaceuticals, climate change and nanotechnology. It will present possible future research avenues by looking at both theory and practice and learning from various disciplines (law and social sciences), legal realities (WTO, USA and EU) and actors (regulators, stakeholders, courts).

The Visions Project brought together a range of decision makers, scientists and thinkers to collectively envision a Europe of the future in terms of sustainable development, and this book is the result of their efforts. Addressing a range of contentious questions from employment to the environment, and approaching the issues from a wide variety of standpoints, these experts also give the reader an analysis of the status quo and ask pertinent and provoking questions about the Europe we are building for the future.
This volume is intended to stimulate a change in the practice of decision support, advocating an interdisciplinary approach centred on both social and natural sciences, both theory and practice. It addresses the issue of analysis and management of uncertainty and risk in decision support corresponding to the aims of Integrated Assessment. A pluralistic method is necessary to account for legitimate plural interpretations of uncertainty and multiple risk perceptions. A wide range of methods and tools is presented to contribute to adequate and effective pluralistic uncertainty management and risk analysis in decision support endeavours. Special attention is given to the development of one such approach, the Pluralistic fRamework for Integrated uncertainty Management and risk Analysis (PRIMA), of which the practical value is explored in the context of the Environmental Outlooks produced by the Dutch Institute for Public Health and Environment (RIVM). Audience: This book will be of interest to researchers and practitioners whose work involves decision support, uncertainty management, risk analysis, environmental planning, and Integrated Assessment.

The business world of today looks considerably different than twenty years ago; companies used to compete domestically, but the number of organizations that continues to do so becomes very scarce. Globalization forces organizations to expand their boundaries and look for new markets. Because of this relatively new phenomenon, more and more companies are sending their employees on international assignments. Traditionally, these expatriates have been men. Despite the need and rise of deployment of expatriates, the number of women in such positions remains low (2-15%). However, if companies want to keep on sending their best and most qualified staff, they cannot rely primarily on men anymore. The increasing demand for expatriates can be met by deploying more women. However, statistical figures show that this is not so easy in practice. This thesis clarifies possible explanations for the scarcity of females on international assignments and researches the ambition of both males and females to pursue an international career. Therefore, this research would be of particular interest for both individuals with international ambitions as well as companies that are sending individuals abroad.
