One evening in his early teens as his family sat around the dining table, Mark O'Neill's father suddenly dropped his English accent and spoke for the first time in his original and long hidden Irish voice. It was the start of an Irish journey for Mark that has lasted a lifetime, taking him through Scotland, to Belfast as a reporter during the Troubles in the 1970s, and from 1978, to the Far East where he continued his search for the meaning of Irishness. In Hong Kong, China and Japan, Mark discovered deep Irish footprints - missionaries, doctors, judges, lawyers, authors and jockeys. Two Irish nuns cured Hong Kong of tuberculosis, an Irish bandmaster wrote the music for Japan's national anthem and a nun taught English and Gaelic to the future Empress Michiko of Japan. Mark followed the footsteps of his grandfather, a Presbyterian missionary who lived in a small town in northeast China for 45 years. He was delighted to find still standing the church his grandfather had built, with a minister and her congregation happy to welcome him.Since 1800, no country in Europe has lost as many of its citizens to emigration as Ireland. From the 19th century, the Irish started to come to Asia, and now the Chinese are going to Ireland - including Hazel Chu, elected Lord Mayor of Dublin in 2020, as well as one of Ireland's most famous celebrity chefs and any number of IT wizards. This is a remarkable account of the Irish diaspora, touchingly personal, full of humour, anecdotes and insights.

Hong Kong is the most European city in Asia. It was not only built by British rule and the energy and entrepreneurship of Chinese but also by people from continental Europe, The citizens of Germany, France, Italy, Spain and Portugal and have made an enormous contribution to the city. They built churches, schools, hospitals, companies and institutions that still thrive today. Catholic orders from France and Italy saved the lives of tens of thousands of young Chinese girls who would otherwise have been allowed to die. A French bacteriologist found the cure to the bubonic plague that ravaged the city in 1894. A Hungarian Jesuit in Hong Kong was the world's top China watcher for three decades. Germans built trading companies that helped to make the city the top commercial port in East Asia.Mark O'Neill recounts the extraordinary story of these Europeans. He mixes history with personal accounts by priests, business people, an art specialist, an expert in fine food and wine, a trilingual singer and a legendary disc jockey. He profiles the institutes that enable Hong Kong people to learn French, German, Spanish and Italian and the international schools that use these languages. Today the city continues to provide Europeans with opportunities and an excitement they cannot find at home. Their love affair with Hong Kong is unabated.

Memphis, Tennessee is a city with a dark past -- a dwelling place for ghosts and a center for the cotton industry and slavery. Known for police corruption and racism, Memphis is where Martin Luther King, Jr. was murdered, where Elvis overdosed, and where the Dixie mafia centered their drug-smuggling operations in the '70s.Set in the present day, Burlesque Blues tells the story of an Army veteran and chef from New Orleans, Franco Chevalier, who travels to Memphis to solve the mysterious death of his father in a Beale Street club during a burlesque performance. Was his father looking into the ghosts that seem to haunt the old family estate in Memphis? Or was he on the trail to find the crown jewels of France, which his family supposedly helped to hide before the revolution? The burlesque dancers, lawyers, and professors that Franco comes in contact with seem to have their own agendas, covered with lies, and hidden by smoke. To find the answers, he must find the strength to steer away from temptation and overcome his own anxieties from the war. But will that be enough?

Robert is unravelling. Following a devastating break up he finds himself distraught, desperate, and increasingly confused. When his literary hero, Mark Twain begins to communicate with him, Robert initially takes solace in Twain's innate wisdom. Quite quickly though warning bells start to sound, and it becomes clear that Mark's whispered, often cryptic advice, could prove dangerous. As Robert's mental health continues to deteriorate, he embarks on a quest around London using Twain's words as his guide and inspiration. Will listening to his hero lead to solace and recovery, or is it an undertaking that can only end in tragedy?

`Education policy is now a global matter and all the more complex for that. Mark Olssen, John Codd and Ann-Marie O'Neill do us an invaluable service in producing a carefully theorised guide to current issues and key concerns - this is an important, erudite and very practical book' - Stephen J Ball, Education Policy Research Unit, University of London `Given the global reach of neoliberal policies, we need cogent books that enable us to better understand the major effects such tendencies have. Education Policy is such a book. It is insightful and well written--and should be read by all of us who care deeply about what is happening in education in international contexts' - Michael W Apple, Author of 'Educating the "Right" Way and John Bascom Professor of Education University of Wisconsin, Madison `I really am taken with the book, the range and depth of analysis are truly impressive. This book is a magnum opus and everyone in the area should read it'- Hugh Lauder, University of Bath `In their insightful and comprehensive book on education policy Mark Olssen, John Codd and Anne-Marie O'Neill wrestle with the big questions of citizenship and democracy in an age of globalization. They argue that ducation policy in the 21st century is the key to security, sustainability and survival. The book, anchored in the poststructuralist perspective of Michel Foucault, traverses the whole territory of education policy not only methods and approaches of policy analysis and the dominant political perspectives that influence policy-classical liberalism, social democracy and neo-liberalism--but also those policy areas that require the closest scrutiny: markets, trust, professionalism, choice, diversity, and finally, community, citizenship and democracy. This is the new policy bible for educationalists - it is at once systematic, provocative and instructive' - Michael A Peters, Research Professor, University of Glasgow 'It is rare indeed for books with such ambitious scope as this one to appear within educational scholarship... This is an important book for any graduate student who is undertaking work on any aspect of education policy' - Education Review This book provides an international perspective on education policy, and of the role and function of education in the global economy. The authors present a Foucauldian perspective on the politics of liberal education, within a theoretical framework necessary for the critical analysis of education policy. The authors set out the analyses necessary for understanding the restructuring in education and social policy that has occurred in many countries affected by the resurgence of neo-liberal political theory. They examine education policy in relation to globalization, citizenship and democracy. The authors argue that globalization is an extension of neoliberalism and is destructive of the nation state, community and democracy. They show the importance of education in building strong democratic nation states and global communities based on cultural identity and inter-cultural awareness. This book is essential reading for students of education policy studies and social policy analysis.

This book describes recent breakthroughs that promise major cost reductions in solar energy production in a clear and highly accessible manner. The authors address the three key areas that have commonly resulted in criticism of solar energy in the past: cost, availability, and variability. Coverage includes cutting-edge information on recently developed 40? efficient solar cells, which can produce double the power of currently available commercial cells. The discussion also highlights the potentially transformative emergence of opportunities for integration of solar energy storage and natural gas combined heat and power systems. Solar energy production in the evening hours is also given fresh consideration via the convergence of low cost access to space and the growing number of large terrestrial solar electric power fields around the world.Dr. Fraas has been active in the development of Solar Cells and Solar Electric Power Systems for space and terrestrial applications since1975. His research team at Boeing demonstrated the first GaAs/GaSb tandem concentrator solar cell in 1989 with a world record energy conversion efficiency of 35?, garnering awards from Boeing and NASA. He has over 30 years of experience at Hughes Research Labs, Chevron Research Co, and the Boeing High Technology Center working with advanced semiconductor devices. In a pioneering paper, he proposed the InGaP/GaInAs/Ge triple junction solar cell predicting a cell terrestrial conversion efficiency of 40? at 300 suns concentration. Having become today’s predominant cell for space satellites, that cell is now entering high volume production for terrestrial Concentrated Photovoltaic (CPV) systems. Since joining JX Crystals, Dr. Fraas has pioneered the development of various thermophotovoltaic (TPV) systems based on the new GaSb infrared sensitive PV cell. Dr. Fraas holds degrees from Caltech (B.Sc. Physics), Harvard (M. A. Applied Physics), and USC (Ph.D. EE).
