Neuro-vascular Neuro-ophthalmology

Neuro-vascular Neuro-ophthalmology

Neuro-ophthalmological symptoms frequently arise in disorders which alter the intracranial and intraorbital circulation. Because of the wide range of sensory and cognitive systems involved in vision and eye movements, visual disturbances are typically found in the common vascular disorders, such as atherosclerosis, migraine, and aneurysms, but can also result from practically any, common or rare, local or systemic vascular disorder. The dysfunction can be part of a largersyndrome or the predominant clinical abnormality. Many of the newer concepts concerning the diagnosis and treatment of neurovascular disorders have evolved in consequence of advances in techniques for neuroimaging such as MRI; methods of measuring systemic coagulation and inflammation; and superselective catheterization ofabnormal blood vessels and vascular lesions. The neuroophthalmological evaluation of clinical signs and symptoms often leads to accurate localization and diagnosis of the lesion. Many of these clinical abnormalities, such as visual field defects and ocular misalignments, can be quantified and followed to assess either the natural history of the disorder or the effects of therapies. No one medical specialty can manage these neurovascular neuro-ophthalmological disorders alone. The complexity of diagnosis and treatment planning requires a multi- disciplinary team. This approach, bringing ophthalmologists, neurosurgeons, and neurologists together to confer in the management of these cases, has been pioneered by the authors' group at the New York University Medical Center.

Vascular Biology for the Clinician

Vascular Biology for the Clinician

Atherosclerosis, the leading cause of death in Western societies, has remained at the forefront of efforts to increase longevity and reduce escalating health care costs. The vascular endothelium has been identified as the cornerstone of a new understanding of the disease's mechanisms and, perhaps, is the earliest target for the initiation of the disease process. Dr. Houston has synthesized the rapidly evolving knowledge base in the field of vascular medicine. In this text, he has created a new source of vital information for healthcare providers. He has taken subjects that until recently were research-oriented and made them clinically relevant for the practicing physician and primary care provider.

About the BookNew Findings in Vascular Surgery has Leading experts cover significant new contributions and literature that could substantially change practice patterns.Vascular health care delivery is rapidly changing and this is no more apparent than in the area of carotid artery diseases. Results of the five-year nationally randomized study, CREST (Carotid Revascularization Endarterectomy vs. Stenting Trial) are discussed. New Findings in Vascular Surgery also covers a large array of topics including new ways to treat hypertension, the use of percutaneous techniques to treat peripheral arterial disease, the role of beta blockers in perioperative mortality, and the metabolic syndrome complex biologic process.Congenital anomaly diseases such as vascular malformations, unusual varicose veins and vascular diseases in the young are also reviewed.
Understanding Venous Reflux the Cause of Varicose Veins and Venous Leg Ulcers
Almost 1 in 2 people suffer from problems with leg veins - so if you don't have them then someone close to you will. Venous reflux (the major cause of leg vein problems) can cause tired or aching legs, swollen or itchy ankles. Many people suffering from venous reflux are unaware of the problem, until they develop unsightly varicose veins, thread veins, venous eczema or venous leg ulcers. Many doctors and nurses are not aware of the new information available and still treat their patients inappropriately with creams, bandages or support stockings. "Understanding Venous Reflux - the cause of varicose veins and leg ulcers" has been written by Mark Whiteley, an internationally renowned vein expert. With clear explanations, illustrated by over 50 easy-to-follow diagrams, this book makes the understanding of venous reflux - the underlying cause of varicose veins and most venous problems (such as thread veins, venous leg ulcers, venous eczema, discoloured ankles, etc.) - accessible to most readers, helping them decide on what treatment they should seek. For medical and nursing students, as well as all doctors, nurses and other health care workers who deal with legs and leg vein problems, this is an essential text.
Ultrasound Guided Vascular Access

Ultrasound Guided Vascular Access

This casebook covers ultrasound guided vascular access with a focus on patient safety. Vascular access is the catalyst between provider and patient. Initially, patients were treated at hospitals for grave illnesses or terrible accidents; however, due to significant strides in medicine, the emerging hospitalized patient is now more commonly treated for chronic illnesses. For these patients, repeated hospital visits slowly deplete their vasculature, creating one of modern medicine’s greatest obstacles: vascular access. This book provides safe solutions to bedside clinical challenges from peripheral to tunneled central lines in the neonatal, pediatric, and adult patient populations.Chapters present unique patient cases, incorporating the latest technology and techniques for safely and methodically meeting vascular access challenges, detailed discussions on therapeutic interventions, and trouble shooting. The book is structured so that each chapter builds on the last, offering peripheral, central, and tunneled catheter solutions through a standardized approach. Finally, each part features a COVID-19 case study including vascular access performed in the prone position. This is an ideal guide for trainees, students, clinicians, and healthcare professionals performing ultrasound guided vascular access on patients.
