One hundred and fifteen kilometers northeast of Lisbon an assembly convened at the Convent of Christ in the city of Tomar in the Spring of 1629. This assembly of ecclesiastical dignitaries and professors of theology and canon law met at the Assembly of Tomar with the mission to formulate a solution to Portugal’s “Jewish problem,” which according to many, had escalated completely out of control. It was a problem for the authorities indeed, since Jews were not permitted to reside in Portugal since 1497, when they were forced to convert. These “New Christians” and their descendants allegedly held on to their Jewish beliefs and practices. The Inquisitors then sought to expunge the Judaizers. The New Christians opposed the introduction of the Inquisition and when they failed, they consistently sought to delimit its authority. The papacy repeatedly decided to support the New Christians, which was typically viewed as an example of Rome’s lust for money. The New Christians denied allegations of connection with Jewish practices and belief. Instead, they pointed to their Catholic loyalty—donations to Catholic causes, endowment of Catholic shrines, entry of their daughters into convents, and even their cries to Jesus and Mary on the way to the stake. An adequate reconstruction of the “Marrano phenomenon” (the life of the New Christians) requires knowledge of a variety of documents. The many inquisitional trial records comprise the most important, but are only a fraction of all the primary documents necessary for the complex picture of New Christians. Cohen contributes to this picture by examining a critical document hitherto largely unfamiliar to the scholarly world, the Report from the Assembly of Tomar.

What Does a Martian Look Like?: The Science of Extraterrestrial Life
"A fascinating and useful handbook to both the science and science fiction of extraterrestrial life. Cohen and Stewart are amusing, opinionated, and expert guides. I found it a terrific and informative piece of work-nothing else like it "-Greg Bear"I loved it."-Larry Niven "Ever wonder about what aliens could be like? The world authority is Jack Cohen, a professional biologist who has thought long and hard about the vast realm of possibilities. This is an engaging, swiftly moving study of alien biology, a subject with bounds and constraints these authors plumb with verve and intelligence."-Gregory Benford"A celebration of life off Earth. A hearteningly optimistic book, giving a much-needed antidote to the pessimism of astrobiologists who maintain that we are alone in the universe-a stance based on a very narrow view of what could constitute life. A triumph of speculative nonfiction."-Dougal Dixon, author ofAfter Man: A Zoology of the Future

Drawn both from previously unanthologized published work and from the author's personal horde of typescripts from the 1960s to the 1980s, this collection of stories centers around philosophical themes: the awareness of existence and experience, of reality and truth, and the relativity of time and place.

The 2018 Cahiers d'Art revue revisits Mir 's works and relationship between Mir and Cahiers d'Art through an anthology of the most beautiful texts published in the revue. It also introduces unpublished objects and pieces from the artist's collection. The stencil Mir made for the No. 1-4 of the 1936 revue is silkscreened as this revue's cover. The issue also includes an interview with Staffan Ahrenberg and Miquel Barcel , and works by Helen Marten, Koo Jong A and Karel Malich. Anchored in the beauty of the Catalan land and in the primitive power of objects, Mir 's works unfold their magical dimension alongside movements and theories. The art critic and founder of Cahiers d'Art, Christian Zervos never stopped following and defending the work of this unclassifiable artist, "the most lyrical painter of his time" and "the most important post cubist artist". Mir is indeed present in Cahiers d'Art from the first year of its existence, 1926, utill the last, 1960. He drew many covers and his famous stencil "Help Spain " (Aidez l'Espagne ) was published in the No. 4-5 of the 1937 issue of the Cahiers d'Art revue. This issue of the new revue, under the direction of R mi Labrusse, revisits the relationship between Mir and Cahiers d'Art through an anthology of the most beautiful texts published in the revue. It also provides insight into the great originality of Mir 's primitivism and a discovery of two collections of the artist: the objects that filled his studio, and the unpublished paintings that he added into certain books in his library. An essay by lisa Sclaunick is dedicated to Mir 's unpublished correspondence with writer Jacques Dupin. A text by Jean-Louis Cohen pays tribute to the architect Jos -Luis Sert who created the buildings of the Palma studio and the Barcelona Foundation, while Rosa Maria Mallet returns to the history of the Mir Foundation. Lastly, four artists complete the revue with a contemporary counterpoint: the Spanish Miquel Barcel , the English Helen Marten, the South Korean Koo Jong A and the Czech Karel Malich.
