This book introduces a set of pedagogical practices designed to assist adolescent English learners in developing their English skills in a way that honors and leverages their native language(s) and cultures. Responding to the linguistic and educational diversity of adolescents, the R.E.A.L. (Relevant, Engaging, and Affirming Literacy) method offers teachers a range of scalable activities, reading lists, and other resources, along with numerous suggestions on how to adapt them for students’ particular needs. By sharing experiences from actual secondary English classes, the author presents diverse learners making meaningful connections to texts and responding through writing, speaking, and other artistic means. These students are developing high levels of literacy, English language skills, and even biliteracy through R.E.A.L. instruction that all English teachers can use with their students.

Old Mr Barker was a curmudgeon who underfed his dogs to make them vicious and kept his low-paid staff loyal with promises of legacies that never materialised. Following his death, his home is sold at auction for an absurdly cheap price to Peggy and Percy Dacre. But when the young couple move into their new home with their four children, Peggy soon discovers that The Beeches-commonly referred to as 'Hell Corner' by the locals-is already occupied. This new edition of The Uncanny House, the first since its original publication in 1927, includes a twenty-page biographical essay by Gina R. Collia: 'Mary L. Pendered: Author, Suffragist, Pacifist, and Thoroughly Good Woman'.

Celia Grey, a fifty-year-old, unmarried writer who has longed for a home of her own for decades, thinks all her prayers have been answered when she inherits her uncle's house. But Clew Lodge is a property with an uncanny reputation. It is a grim and daunting place, desolate and derelict, having been left to the forces of corruption since Uncle Jerrold abandoned it a decade prior to his death-because he 'could not stand the whispering'. This new edition of The Forsaken House at Misty Vale, the first since its original publication in 1932, includes a twenty-page biographical essay by Gina R. Collia: 'Mary L. Pendered: Author, Suffragist, Pacifist, and Thoroughly Good Woman'.
Greetings from Gettysburg

Visit Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, showcased by 160 beautiful historic postcards, memorializing important and noteworthy scenes as though browsing a family picture album. The Battle of Gettysburg, fought from July 1 to July 3, 1863, with over 51,000 American casualties make this battle the single-most costly conflict fought within the United States. This book, however, is as much about the visitors to Gettysburg as it is about the soldiers and the battle struggles. See battlefields, monuments, statues, soldiers, town citizens, and beautiful landscape scenes and relive history via quotes from the writing that grace some of the greetings. Those who have been to the battlefield will recognize familiar places. For others, who have never spent time in this busy, yet tranquil, place, it will be like receiving postcards from a friend saying "wish you were here" or “Greetings from Gettysburg.”

Leaders of the American Catholic community want to and need to reach out to young adults. But effective ministry to young adults means that church leaders have to understand the attitudes and the needs of the current generation of Catholics in their 20s and 30s. This is why Dean Hoge, William Dinges, Mary Johnson, and Juan Gonzales began their study of young adult Catholics. How do both European-American and Latino Catholics actually live their Catholicism? Are they alienated from the Church? Are they cynical about the Church's moral teachings? Do they take the Pope's statements seriously? Do they attend Mass? Have significant numbers left for other churches? Do they want Catholic education for their children? Seeking answers to these and other questions, Dean Hoge and his colleagues conducted a national survey in 1997, supplemented by a telephone survey and then by personal interviews with over 800 men and women across the country. The interviews put a human face on the information provided, and they form a compelling part of this timely narrative. The authors underscore observations that include the strength and tenacity of Catholic identity in spite of many challenges, the high level of personal decision-making among those interviewed and surveyed, and the readiness of young Catholics for institutional reforms.
