Mary Randolph (1762-1828) was an American author, known for writing The Virginia House-Wife; Or, Methodical Cook (1824), one of the most influential housekeeping and cook books of the nineteenth century. Randolph's influential housekeeping book The Virginia House-Wife (1824) went through many editions until the 1860s. Randolph tried to improve women's lives by limiting the time and money they had to spend in their kitchens. The Virginia House-Wife included many inexpensive ingredients that anyone could purchase to make impressive meals. Besides popularizing the use of more than 40 vegetables, Randolph's book also introduced to the Southern public dishes from abroad, such as gazpacho, boldly calling for "poisonous" tomatoes in her Spanish-based recipes
Joggin' Your Noggin: Fun and Challenging Word Games for Seniors
The first in a series of 5 books with a variety of activities aimed at improving the lives of people struggling with Alzheimer's or dementia. Unlike many Alzheimer's activities books directed to caregivers, "Joggin' Your Noggin" is designed to be completed by a person in mild to moderate stages, independently or with some support. Written by a Speech-Language Pathologist, the games offer an opportunity not only for fun, entertainment, and a sense of accomplishment, but also for essential mental stimulation. "Complete the Song Title,", "Name the Opposite," "Picture the Description," and "Fill in the Blank" are but a few examples. When shared with caregivers, family or friends, meaningful interaction is automatic. Individual questions provide a springboard to reminisce about fond memories and create moments of shared joy. Activities Directors and Recreation Therapists will find a wealth of ready-made content to incorporate into group activities. The level of difficulty, based on vocabulary, varies from the simplest in Volume I to the most advanced in Volume IV. Answers are readily accessible on the following page or at the back of the book. Each volume contains over 70 games and is sold at a more affordable price than similar products. The "Joggin' Your Noggin" series continues to receive very positive reviews.

A book that highlights significant world events over fifty years, this "Joggin' Your Noggin" aims to bring entertainment and mental stimulation to readers. Reflecting on the past can be a source of joy, not only for those with dementia, but for many others, especially as they approach their "golden years." Milestones include historical, technological, scientific and cultural happenings related to inventions, politics, songs, famous musicians, TV/movie stars, food, fashion and more. In some instances, seniors will read the book independently. Since each description ends with a blank, the reader is given a chance to "jog" their "noggin" and identify the missing word. Straightforward answers are conveniently provided on the reverse of each page. But the more important benefit is simply to think back and arouse "warm and fuzzy" feelings. Connecting an event to a memorable personal experience may evoke positive emotions. The book offers countless opportunities to reflect, reminisce, and hopefully recreate moments of joy. Seniors may also enjoy large-group discussions of historical milestones and sharing fond memories. Activities Directors in senior centers, assisted living facilities or nursing homes may find "Joggin" a useful resource when creating entertaining games.

Originally published in 1824, this influential, classic guide by a noted Virginia hostess is widely regarded as the first truly Southern cookbook. Compiled and written by Mary Randolph (reputed to have been the best cook in Richmond), it contains a treasury of cooking instructions for everything from hearty soups to exotic cordials. Included are time-honored recipes for a wide range of beef, veal, lamb and pork dishes, along with fish, poultry, sauces, vegetables, pudding, cakes, preserves, and more. In addition to such traditional Southern fare as okra soup, curry of catfish, barbequed shoat (a fat young hog), field peas, beaten biscuits and sweet potato buns, readers will also find scores of recipes for dishes, condiments and beverages rarely seen on today's dinner table: sweetbread and oyster pie, grilled calf's head, shoulder of mutton with celery sauce, fried calf's feet, pheasant "a-la-daub," tansy pudding, gooseberry fool (cold stewed gooseberries with custard and whipped cream), pickled nasturtiums, walnut catsup, vinegar of the four thieves, ginger wine, and many other edibles from a bygone era. More than just a collection of recipes, however, this comprehensive cook's reference also provides a fascinating introduction to the food and customs of the antebellum South, as well as handy instructions for making soap, starch and cologne water, cleaning silver, drying herbs, and much other useful advice. For this edition, Jan Longone, a specialist in antiquarian wine and food books, has contributed an informative new introduction that outlines the singular qualities of Mrs. Randolph's book and its preeminent place in American culinary history. Any cook, antiquarian or lover of Americana will enjoy this rare glimpse into the kitchens of the past.
