Sequel to Vivaldi in the Dark Three years after that first meeting in a theatre storeroom, Jayden Phillips and Darren Peace are separating for the first time, trading in school for the trappings of adult life. Jayden has achieved his dream of a place at Cambridge University; Darren has achieved his own of escaping the Cold War of home and tasting true independence for the first time. A hundred miles apart and embarking on two very different paths, Jayden feels it is inevitable that time and distance will slowly pull them apart. School relationships, after all, don't last. Darren disagrees -- at first. Love is all they need, and they have weathered harder storms than chasing dreams. That is until the separation, and the encroaching influence of Jayden's new friends, begins to take its toll on Darren's mental state. Alone, he descends in a rapid downward spiral that is finally arrested by one night and a drastic course of action. In the wake of a single unanswered phone call, Jayden learns that time and distance have the power to do much more than break a relationship. The dream is over -- and the reality is far, far worse.

The tell-all tale of Clark Schroeder: fraudster, hacker, and smuggler. Clark gets the idea for his own gun store during a pheasant hunt when a fellow hunter brags about his gun being a knockoff manufactured by his brother-in-law. Dollar signs float in Clark's head as he realizes that he can make the knockoffs look real by hacking the ATF gun registry and putting in a record for the fake serial numbers. Then Clark gets an amphibious plane to fly the guns out of Mexico and unload them at the lake near Manhattan, KS where he can easily set up shop. From there, wacky things begin to happen in Clark's store. He is inspected by the KBI the first day he is open and one of the guns doesn't come up as a registered serial number. An employee steals from Clark and then tries to rob the store, twice. This attracts law enforcement to Clark's store. Even worse is that the ATF and FAA stick their nose in Clark's business. Can Clark even stay open a year before landing himself in jail?As the pressure gets to him, Clark is visited by some crazy individuals. He must keep his own sanity during some trying times. It is a good thing he has a budding romance that becomes a source of comfort and strength, but nightmares start coming. As Clark's freedom is jeopardized, his struggle within his own conscience comes to a head. What started as a quest for financial freedom turns into a quest for freedom from himself. Can Clark make it?
Joseph's Dilemma

Joseph's Dilemma

Matthew J. Marohl

'When Mary had been engaged to Joseph, but before they lived together, she was found to be with child from the Holy Spirit' (1:18). We are made to assume that Joseph discovers that Mary is pregnant, but that he does not know that she is with child from the Holy Spirit. Joseph must decide what he will do with Mary. The discussion of this verse generally focuses on two questions. First, did Joseph suspect Mary of adultery? Second, if he did suspect Mary of adultery, what were his options? If Joseph reveals that Mary is pregnant she will be killed. If Joseph conceals Mary's pregnancy, he will be opposing the law of the Lord. What is a 'righteous' man to do? Marohl's study of honor killings, be they modern or ancient, opens up new avenues of interpretation for "The Gospel of Matthew's" infancy narrative. It is a pattern that is to be replicated in the lives of the Jesus followers.
Kashmir's Right to Secede

Kashmir's Right to Secede

A separatist conflict has been ongoing in India-administered Kashmir since 1989. Focusing on this region, this book critiques the existing normative theories of secession, and offers a comprehensive examination of the right of sub-groups to secede. The book looks at the different accounts of the moral right to secede, and assesses both the theories themselves as well as the claims of those who want to separate Kashmir from India. Included within this analysis are the three main types of normative theory that ground the right of groups to secede in principles of national self: determination, consensual governance and rectificatory justice. Previous studies have discussed the causes behind the uprising in Kashmir against Indian authority and examined some of the legal and geo-political implications of the conflict for India and the wider region. This book provides a new way of looking at the Kashmir dispute, by asking what these theories tell us about Kashmir, and in turn what the example of Kashmir allows us to learn about these theories. It is of interest to students and scholars of South Asian Politics and International Relations.
Hegel's Logical Comprehension of the Modern State

Hegel's Logical Comprehension of the Modern State

Matthew J. Smetona

This book argues that the criterion of rationality Hegel employs in his argument that the modern state as he conceptualizes it is rational is the holistic inferential system of concepts he refers to as the Concept and depicts in the Science of Logic. The book then attempts to explain Hegel’s political philosophy as it is articulated in the Philosophy of Right in terms of the logical and metaphysical requirements of the Science of Logic. This unified logical interpretation of Hegel’s philosophy is opposed not only to recent “practical” interpretations which dispense entirely with his Science of Logic, but also to recent transcendental interpretations which attribute to Hegel the position that the determining activity of thought is limited to the form of the object of its cognition. The result of the interpretive argument offered in this book is a unified philosophy of logic and politics, in which the content of the objective political world is conceptual all the way down. Furthermore, it is argued that the interpretation of the relation between Hegel’s logic and political philosophy offered in this book implies a closer proximity between Hegel’s political philosophy and Marx’s critique of political economy than is generally recognized in the contemporary scholarship.
Paul's Works of the Law in the Perspective of Second-Century Reception
Jesus Creed Book of the Year 2018What did Paul mean by "works of the law"? Paul writes that we are justified by faith apart from "works of the law," a disputed term that represents a fault line between "old" and "new" perspectives on Paul. Was the apostle reacting against the Jews' good works done to earn salvation, or the Mosaic law's practices that identified the Jewish people? Matthew J. Thomas examines how Paul's second-century readers understood these points in conflict, how their readings relate to "old" and "new" perspectives, and what their collective witness suggests about the apostle's own meaning. Surprisingly, these early witnesses align closely with the "new" perspective, though their reasoning often differs from both modern viewpoints. They suggest that Paul opposes these works neither due to moralism, nor primarily for experiential or social reasons, but because the promised new law and covenant, which are transformative and universal in scope, have come in Christ.
U.S. Trade Policy

U.S. Trade Policy

Matthew J. Slaughter

After more than half a century in which the United States led international trade liberalization, the country has been in a long stalemate over trade policy. It has been losing ground as other nations enter into market-opening arrangements that disadvantage U.S.-based production. In an increasingly competitive global economy, the policies of the past no longer offer a road map for the future. U.S. Trade Policy assesses current U.S. trade policy and analyzes issues of trade policy authority, trade negotiations, investment rules, competition policy, regulatory barriers, exchange rates, and export controls. This report argues that closing the political divide on trade will require measures that respond to the American public's ambivalence and are more explicitly designed to maximize the economic benefits that come from trade openings by increasing exports and attracting job creating investment. It also offers recommendations for trade and investment policies the United States should adopt that will help to create jobs and raise incomes for more Americans while also advancing foreign policy interests.
Calvin's Political Theology and the Public Engagement of the Church

Calvin's Political Theology and the Public Engagement of the Church

Matthew J. Tuininga

Cambridge University Press
2017
sidottu
In Calvin's Political Theology and the Public Engagement of the Church, Matthew J. Tuininga explores a little appreciated dimension of John Calvin's political thought, his two kingdoms theology, as a model for constructive Christian participation in liberal society. Widely misunderstood as a proto-political culture warrior, due in part to his often misinterpreted role in controversies over predestination and the heretic Servetus, Calvin articulated a thoughtful approach to public life rooted in his understanding of the gospel and its teaching concerning the kingdom of God. He staked his ministry in Geneva on his commitment to keeping the church distinct from the state, abandoning simplistic approaches that placed one above the other, while rejecting the temptations of sectarianism or separatism. This revealing analysis of Calvin's vision offers timely guidance for Christians seeking a mode of faithful, respectful public engagement in democratic, pluralistic communities today.
