A Guide to the Maximus Poems of Charles Olson offers an essential companion to Olson's monumental and intricate Maximus Poems. This scholarly guide navigates the complexities of Olson’s allusive and expansive verse, which spans themes from local Gloucester history to universal mythologies. With nearly 4,000 annotations, the guide meticulously decodes references to historical figures, literary works, geographical landmarks, and philosophical concepts. It moves line by line, offering insight into Olson’s sources and intellectual framework, including his borrowings from Algonquin legends, Arabic angelology, and Whitehead’s cosmology. Rich with unpublished material from Olson’s papers, as well as letters, interviews, and classroom notes, the guide aims to equip readers with the tools to actively engage with Olson's text, uncovering its layered meanings through his principle of ‘istorin—"to find out for oneself." Structured chronologically rather than alphabetically, the guide mirrors the progression of Olson’s three-volume epic, weaving historical scholarship with interpretive clarity. Each annotation situates Olson’s references in context, revealing the intricate interplay between history, myth, and the poet's life in Gloucester. The guide further illuminates Olson’s creative process, tracing the evolution of his ideas through drafts, personal correspondences, and published works. Designed as both a reference and an entry point into Olson’s ambitious poetic project, it not only deepens appreciation for The Maximus Poems but also serves as a model for literary scholarship, inviting readers to engage with Olson’s world on their own intellectual journey. This title is part of UC Press's Voices Revived program, which commemorates University of California Press’s mission to seek out and cultivate the brightest minds and give them voice, reach, and impact. Drawing on a backlist dating to 1893, Voices Revived makes high-quality, peer-reviewed scholarship accessible once again using print-on-demand technology. This title was originally published in 1980.

Napoleon Means Business is based on themaxims of Napoleon as a project undertakenby the author to present one of the mostillustrious generals in history as a proponent ofsuccess in any area of endeavor. Restructuringthe words of Napoleon empowers the readerto take advantage of strong military idealsand transform them into business models thathave been utilized by other great leaders throughout history. The commonality of the precepts have generally been ascribed to Asianinfluence, but in this book the Western mentality for venture and success is adroitly used and eliminates the Eastern mindset used asthe standard in works of this type. Taking each of the historically accurate maxims accredited to Napoleon, the author explains how to apply the principles of inordinate accomplishment from acommercial perspective in terms easy to understand that anyone can apply to any aspect of their life.
This could also be deemed a writing journal. For many years, I've been an avid romance reader, writer, and an editor. More recently, I've also been working as a writing coach and an independent editor, expanding my experience beyond content, copy, and romance editing to other genres. I maintain an eclectic taste in reading, which is what keeps me from focusing on one genre when I write. After being invited to do a presentation about "writing short" for a conference, several notions came to mind. Before I retired from the corporate world to write fiction and edit, I used to write ads, newsletters, catalogs, educational material, and presentations for a marketing company. I clearly understand the reason why writing short needs to provide maximum impact whether writing ad campaigns or taglines or book blurbs. Every word counts. A few ideas, some painful analysis, and a great deal of research later, I hope to help other authors understand the idea of condensing a concept without losing the essence of the writing. Keep the flavor and the spice even when you choose to reduce the size of the recipe. The one exceptional thing I identified while preparing the presentation was how to take theme and compress the ideas to efficiently write something short yet interesting. The following are suggestions, so as writers, we can... Condense the essence and leave the reader satisfied. The magic word is...suggestion.
