Poor People's Social Movement Organizations

Poor People's Social Movement Organizations

Melvin F. Hall

Praeger Publishers Inc
1995
sidottu
The goal of this book is to join social movement analysis with collective action theory. To that end, the author introduces the organizational empowerment model of collective action. All social movement theories lack a discussion of the influence of movement organization on the tactics of an organization. A national survey of social movement organizations is employed to develop a model of how the organizational features of the local group, competition among social movement organizations, the political settings of the organization, and organizational empowerment influence collective action style. This model will allow for testing some long held assumptions about organizational change as well as assumptions about the efficacy of poor people organized to achieve change.

Most modern textbooks on cluster analysis are written from the standpoint of computer science, which give the background, description and implementation of computer algorithms. This book proclaims several firsts — the first to present a broad mathematical treatment of the subject, the first that illustrates dissimilarities taking values in a poset, and the first to notice the connection with formal concept analysis which is a powerful tool for investigating hidden structures in large data sets. This book presents the subject from a mathematical viewpoint with careful definitions. All clearly stated axioms are illustrated with concrete examples. New ideas are introduced informally first, and then in a careful, systematic manner. Much of the material has not previously appeared in the literature. It is to be hoped that the book holds promising directive to launch a new research area that is based on graph theory, as well as partially ordered sets. It also suggests the cluster algorithms that can be used for practical applications. The emphasis will be largely on ordinal data and ordinal cluster methods.

A.F.I.R.E. Achieving Financial Independence Retiring Early
Melvin Greene understood at an early age that serving a company for over thirty years would not allow him to retire at his desired age of fifty-five. He knew retirement was attainable but wondered if he would be able to afford a lifestyle of ease, comfort and freedom. The aim, at some point in life, was to experience and enjoy the residual of his hard work. The reality for most hard-working Americans is that after they retire, they will need a part-time job to support themselves financially. He knew concepts such as investment strategies, planning for retirement and estate planning were not freely shared. The people who could profit from these approaches were usually not privy to this information and the people who knew did not often share. Melvin was on a mission to discover what most people would not share. He worked the nine-to-five job and invested the money he would have spent on lunch. Instead of purchasing extravagant items, he invested. While others were buying fancy clothes, he was buying stocks and bonds. Melvin taught hundreds of others to do the same. It was a paradigm shift in thinking. A.F.I.R.E. will show you how to do the same He is not knocking fancy items; in fact, he now owns them. But they came only after his nest egg was secured. Throughout this book, Melvin invites you to understand how to invest, so you can be in the driver's seat He emphasizes that investing is a learned behavior. It should give you hope that you can do the same with the right coach.About the AuthorMelvin is an established tax professional who taught both taxation and accounting at the collegiate level. He worked as a corporate tax professional for Fortune 50 companies, including Pfizer, Mobil Oil, United Airlines and International Paper Company. He retired at Cushman & Wakefield, Inc. as global tax director and currently serves as founder and owner of TAX-R-US, a tax planning, preparation and audit resolution certified public accounting firm. He also volunteers his services as investment director for the Cedarmore Corporation's Young Entrepreneurs Training Program in New York. Melvin received a Bachelor's Degree from Benedict College, an MBA in Taxation from Governor's State University and an MST in Taxation and Accounting from Fordham University Graduate School of Business. He is passionate about seeing people move their finances in a direction they never thought possible. Remember, you cannot open new possibilities with the same old door. You need a new one.

""She was dirty and dusty. Her curly hair had seen neither a comb nor water for months. In one hand she carried a package of cigarettes and in the other a solvent rag."" Young Namusisi had no home, no family, no money for school fees, and no one to love her or care for her. She survived in the culture of the buyaye on the streets, parking lots, and porches of the city of Kampala, Uganda. But one day she met Daddy Kefa and her life was changed. He took her to his children's home where she was provided for and was shown the love of Christ. Namusisi was just one of more than six thousand Ugandan street children who were rescued from a meaningless and hopeless life by the efforts of a compassionate, selfless, and godly man. From the Dust contains the poignant stories of many of those destitute children--stories of how they came to live on the streets and of how their lives were changed. Here are stories of a people ravaged by a demonic dictator, a people who had lost all sense of humanity and were struggling under emotional, physical, and spiritual poverty. From the Dust tells how the efforts of one man made a difference to so many who were groping in a dark world of sin and hopelessness. It is the story of the love of God to the lost and dying, and of how that love made a difference to so many Africans and can still make a difference to those who will trust in him. ""He raiseth up the poor out of the dust, and lifteth up the beggar from the dunghill, to set them among princes, and to make them inherit the throne of glory"" (1 Sam 2:8). Kefa Sempangi is a former minister and parliamentarian in the Ugandan government; the founder of Africa Foundation, a charity for displaced children; former chairman of the National Council for Children in Uganda; and pioneer and founder of the Presbyterian Church in Uganda. He is the author of A Distant Grief (1979). Jennifer Melvin has taught for thirty years in Christian schools and is presently teaching middle and high school English at Covenant Christian School in Panama City, Florida.

Christians generally recognize the need to live a holy, or sanctified, life. But they differ on what sanctification is and how it is achieved. How does one achieve sanctification in this life? How much success in sanctification is possible? Is a crisis experience following one's conversion normal--or necessary? If so, what kind of experience, and how is it verified?Five Views on Sanctification--part of the Counterpoints series--brings together in one easy-to-understand volume five major Protestant views on sanctification: Wesleyan View – represented by Melvin E. DieterReformed View – represented by Anthony A. HoekemaPentecostal View – represented by Stanley M. HortonKeswick View – represented by J. Robertson McQuilkinAugustinian-Dispensationalism View – represented by John F. WalvoordWriting from a solid evangelical stance, each author describes and defends his own understanding of the doctrine sanctification and then responds to the views of the other authors. The Counterpoints series presents a comparison and critique of scholarly views on topics important to Christians that are both fair-minded and respectful of the biblical text. Each volume is a one-stop reference that allows readers to evaluate the different positions on a specific issue and form their own, educated opinion.
