Michael Donovan was a young man of 19 when he experienced a sudden and dramatic calling to become a priest. Because he had left school early to work on his father's farm, it proved a difficult path to follow because of his lack of education, but he persevered and was eventually ordained as a member of the Society of the Divine Word (SVD). In 1981 he travelled to Papua New Guinea, where he began work as a priest in remote rural parishes and later as a teacher and spiritual director. Called From The Fields, based on letters he wrote over forty years, gives a fascinating insight into the life of a missionary and its many challenges and rewards.

Security Force Assistance is analyzed, and some specific recommendations designed to improve U.S. performance are provided. While SFA may be a new term, the activities themselves are familiar ones related to how the Department of Defense works to train, advise, and assist foreign partners' security establishments to accomplish common objectives. The United States has demonstrated serious SFA deficiencies in recent years. As Secretary of Defense Robert Gates has noted, the United States is likely to remain actively and broadly engaged in SFA for many years to come. The need for comprehensive improvement encompasses DoD military and civilian efforts and requires thoughtful integration with broader whole of government approaches.

This book is a major reassessment of Michael Weinstein’s political philosophy. It situates his singular contribution, designated as "critical vitalism," in the context of both canonical American and contemporary continental theory. Weinstein is presented as a philosopher of life and as an American Nietzsche. Yet the contributors also persuasively argue for this form of thinking as a prescient prophecy addressing contemporary society’s concern over the management of life as well as the technological changes that both threaten and sustain intimacy. This is the first full scale study of Weinstein’s work which reveals surprising aspects of a philosophic journey that has encompassed most of the major American (pragmatic or vitalist) or Continental (phenomenological or existential) traditions. Weinstein is read as a comparative political theorist, a precursor to post-structuralism, and as a post-colonial border theorist. A different aspect of his oeuvre is highlighted in each of the book’s three sections. That was how I began the Eulogy for my beloved brother Michael Leon Gossett, for the audience seated at Christian Life Assembly church in Langley, British Columbia, Canada; on Thursday, August 15, 2019 - ten days after Michael suddenly experienced "the happiest day of a Christian's Life" (as our father always told us) by means of a unexpected massive heart attack at his home.
