Michael Arlen (1895-1956) was a literary shooting star among the smart set of the 1920s. The self-styled chronicler of Mayfair society, he became an international celebrity after the publication of his scandalous novel The Green Hat in 1924. Born into an immigrant Armenian community in Lancashire, following early breakthrough in London he led a millionaire’s life on the Riviera and dabbled in the Hollywood film industry before living out his final years, all but forgotten, in retirement in New York. For all his success as a purveyor of popular fiction, he remained forever an ‘outsider’, arousing both fascination and suspicion in the English-speaking world. Encounters with Michael Arlen is a set of overlapping essays that reflect how the novelist was seen by himself and by his contemporaries. Unlike a conventional biography, the emphasis is on his connections with other leading figures of the day, especially fellow writers such as D.H. Lawrence, Ernest Hemingway and Rebecca West. The book is also a rumination by the author on the sheer difficulty of writing literary biography. With its comprehensive timeline and listing of archive materials relating to Arlen, it should serve as a stimulus to future research on this neglected and enigmatic personality.

The Green Hat perfectly reflects the atmosphere of the 1920s-the post-war fashion for verbal smartness, youthful cynicism, and the spirit of rebellion of the "bright young things" of Mayfair. Iris Storm, femme fatale, races around London and Europe in her yellow Hispano-Suiza surrounded by romantic intrigue, but beneath the glamour she is destined to be a tragic heroine. A perfect synecdoche, in fact: as the hat is to the woman, so the words of the title are to an entire literary style. The success of the novel when it was first published in 1924 let to its adaptation for the screen, with Greta Garbo starring as Iris Storm.

PiracyA Romantic Chronicle Of These Days (Edition1)
Piracy: A romantic chronicle of these days follows a solitary figure attempting to reconcile inner turmoil with the external glitter of post-war London. The narrative traces a deep emotional journey shaped by trauma, alienation, and the desire for intimacy in a rapidly shifting social landscape. At the story s outset, a young man sits alone in a quiet restaurant, weighed down by a recent expulsion and the loss of a limb in war. Despite wealth and physical comfort, he remains estranged from the world around him, questioning the meaning of success and personal identity. His interactions with those around him only highlight a profound sense of disconnection, and his introspective mood reflects a broader cultural uncertainty. The setting of London, with its blend of opulence and emptiness, mirrors his internal conflict. The novel explores how the ideals of romance and social belonging are complicated by personal loss and societal upheaval. Through this character s internal dialogue and encounters, the work offers a nuanced meditation on identity, disillusionment, and the aching need for genuine connection in a world marked by performance and post-war adjustment.
