Chapter 1--The Catfight: Do you remember how to get off this island? Festerman asked his associate, David Nacow. Not exactly, Nacow replied as their rented Suburban wound its way along a gravel road. This doesn t look familiar ... probably should have paid more attention on our way in. ... But, hell, it s such a small island. ... We re probably okay. See what you can do with the GPS, Festerman suggested. If we were in my car, I d have no problem. ... I ll take a look ... No need, Festerman interrupted as he slowed down. I recognize this road ... if I turn left here, it ll take us straight to the ferry road. Nacow was pleased by those words. He was having a difficult time figuring out how to use the rental s Garmin. Neither man spoke again until after the ferry attendant had directed them into the front position of lane two. Lights off, Nacow chuckled, reading the posted instructions. They want you to turn your lights off. ... Like it s gonna make a difference. Festerman fiddled around with the switch until he got the headlights turned off. He did leave the engine running. A black Jeep that had been behind them pulled into lane three directly even with Nacow s door. He glanced over as it came to a stop. She then ran around in front of her vehicle to get at the passenger. Both Festerman and Nacow watched intently. By the time the blonde reached the other side of her car, the redhead had already jumped out, slamming her door with equal animation. The blonde clutched the younger girl by the hair and slapped her not once but several times. You re nothin but a cheap whore The blonde screamed. I knew you couldn t be trusted. The young redhead tried pushing the blond woman off, kicking her fiercely on the shins several times with her cowboy boots. You re the slut The redhead shouted back through her tears. The two women were at Whitefish Point in order to watch the migrating birds. But what they saw scared one of them to death. The author tells this story like Stephen King would. This book is not to be read if you want to sleep. It is also recommended that the reader not be alone when reading it. This is what readers are saying about the whole Jack Handler saga: Move over, Patterson, I now have a new favorite author, Jack and his daughter make a great tag team, great intrigue, and diversions. I have a cabin on Sugar Island and enjoyed the references to the locations. I met the author at Joey's (the real live Joey) coffee shop up on the hill, great writer, good stuff. I don't usually finish a book in the course of a week, but read this one in two sittings so it definitely had my attention. I am looking forward to the next installment. This book is the source for Jack Handler's notorious "Inscrutable Puzzle." It is introduced in the latter chapters and has never been solved, even after publication of the sixth book in the series. It is a puzzle that would make Alan Turing proud. But when Jack's cell phone vibrates at 5:30 a.m. on Christmas morning, little could he have predicted the challenges that lurked. Kate, Jack's daughter (herself a NY homicide detective), enlists his help on a murder case she is working. The intrigue compounds when he learns her case is intricately entwined with a plot to assassinate a sitting President, and that a former first lady is one of the conspirators. But the situation only gets worse with Jack's involvement, as it leads to a group of foreign agents kidnapping Kate in order to coerce Jack's bidding. He must then balance his focus between rescuing his daughter, and preventing the assassination. If that were not complicated enough, the conspirators attempt to contract Jack for the hit. The story unfolds on the streets of New York City, with visits to Upstate New York, DC, and Chicago. This is what one reader had to say: "Jack and the New York Death Mask" is Scary Good This book reminds me of what "House of Cards" would look like if Tom Clancy had written it. The story is told that some of Clancy's books drew the ire of military and government officials because they assumed that the writer had managed to get his hands on inside or classified information, an accusation that Clancy vehemently denied at the time. Recent blog posts and articles (conspiracy theorists?) however suggest that the claims about Clancy's inside sources might have had some merit. In "Jack and the New York Death Mask" Allison's assassination plot against a sitting president is downright frightening on a couple levels. It is scary to think that people in power, or who would like to be in power, might stoop to the levels depicted by Carrier. God help us if that ever became the case. It is also frightening to consider the details of the plan that Carrier describes. I loved this book because it made me think. It scared my socks off, but it did make me think. If this ever becomes a movie I hope that every so often Jack will glance over at the camera the way Kevin Spacey does in "House of Cards," and make me feel better about the whole thing. One of the Amazon reviewers calls Michael Carrier "the next Grissom." Initially I thought he was referring to John Gresham. I didn't understand that comparison. I'm sure he was referring to James Grissom, the "Law and Order" and "Trial by Jury" writer. That makes better sense. But in my thinking, Carrier's writing reminds me more of a not-so-polished Tom Clancy. Actually, I think it is unfair to compare one writer to another--no matter how complimentary the comparison. Writers and their books must be evaluated on their own merits, not how they stack up against arbitrary standards. What might seem to be a flaw to a Michael Connelly fan, might be thought charming by a Baldacci reader. If a book moves me, then to me that is a good book. I think "Jack and the New York Death Mask" is a good book. It made me think. ---Michaele Michaels

European monetary unification seems to be one of the most important events in international monetary affairs since the breakdown of Bretton Woods. This book explores the new economics of monetary UnIon. It carefully discusses the effects of shocks and policies on output and prices. Shocks and policies are country-specific or common. They occur on the demand or supply side. Countries can differ in behavioural functions. Wages can be fixed, flexible, or slow. In addition, fixed wages and flexible wages can coexist. Take for instance fixed wages in Germany and flexible wages in France. Or take fixed wages in Europe and flexible wages in America. A special feature of this book is the numerical estimation of shock and policy multipliers. Further topics are inflation and disinflation. Take for instance inflation in Germany and price stability in France. Then what policy is needed for disinflation in the union? And what will be the dynamic effects on Germany and France? The present book is part of a larger research project on monetary union, see Carlberg (1999, 2000).
