Med musicalen Hair i 1968 slog rockmusikken igennem i teatret. Det ændrede i løbet af få år fuldstændigt det populære musikteater. Den popkultur, der havde udviklet sig i 1960'erne, blev toneangivende for såvel æstetik som idé i forestillingerne. Der opstod en teaterform, hvor popmusikkens direkte appel til sanserne blev kombineret med fortællinger om ensomhed, afmagt og undergang, langt fra operetten og den klassiske musicals lykkeberusede utopi og happy end. Der er blevet lånt fra film, rockkoncerter og billedkunst til at skabe et teater, som direkte reflekterer samtiden.
