Systrarna Signe (190799) och Lisbeth Klemming (f 1908) gifte sig i Holland respektive England. Under andra världs-kriget var Signe internerad på Java medan Lisbeth arbetade i brevcensuren i Indien. Efter kriget kunde de återförenas i föräldrahemmet i Stockholm till julen 1945. Det var första gången jag träffade mina livliga och högljudda mostrar.I den här boken berättar Signe själv om sitt liv fram till hemkomsten 1945. Sa min äldsta dotter Liselott när hon hade läst min berättelse om min barndom och ungdom.Jag hade då skrivit mig från 1940 till 1964 när jag mötte mina barns mor. Flykten från Tyskland till morföräldrarna i Sverige och min pappa lyckliga återkomst till familjen efter 21 månader i sovjetisk krigsfångenskap var betydligt lättare att få på pränt än nybyggarminnen från Åkersberga med en ständigt växande familj eller månskensbondelivet i Dalarna.Nu har jag skrivit om er också, mina kära döttrar och också något litet om era barn.Det är nära 12 år sedan jag började skriva den här boken. Under tiden har det blivit tre andra böcker som har kommit emellan, den om Morfar Gösta, den om Mamma och Pappa och den om mina härliga mostrar Signe och Lisbeth.

Det är den 8 maj 1945, stilleståndsdagen. Andra världskriget är slut. Tre tyska soldater lyckas ta sig till hamnen i Ventspils i Lettland på flykt undan sovjetiska styrkor. Den lilla hamnfärjan Agnes är redan proppfull med flyende tyskar. Den ska gå mot Gotland så snart det blir tillräckligt mörkt. – Följer ni med? frågar Willy. Han har ett skadat knä och orkar inte gå längre. – Nej, jag låter hellre ryssarna ta mig än jag drunknar, svarar Herbert. Herbert hamnar i fångenskap men räddas mirakulöst ur en snödriva där han har svimmat av utmattning. För att inte lägerläkaren ska behöva få ännu en död fånge släpps han efter 21 månader. I augusti 1947 kan han äntligen återförenas med sin familj. Hans svenska hustru Ann-Margret och hans båda söner undkom britternas terrorbombningar av Hamburg. Men huset där de hade bott blev en ruin. De lyckades fly till hennes föräldrar i Stockholm på sommaren 1944. Men så länge kriget pågick fick hon utstå många påtryckningar och hot från Gestapo som till varje pris ville få henne att återvända till Tyskland med de blivande soldaterna. – Känner ni Herbert? frågade en främmande kvinna på tyska i telefon. Det var i mars år 2002. Hon hade en massa brev från honom till sin mamma Marianne från 1934 ända till 1948. Det visade sig vara min dittills okända halvsyster som ringde. Jag kände att jag måste försöka berätta den här historien.
