Shakespeare's Dramatic Transactions

Shakespeare's Dramatic Transactions

Shakespeare’s Dramatic Transactions uses conventions of performance criticism-staging and theatrical presentation-to analyze seven major Shakespearean tragedies: Hamlet, Othello, King Lear, Macbeth, Antony and Cleopatra, Richard II, and Richard III. As scholars and readers increasingly question the theoretical models used to describe the concepts of “mimesis” and “representation,” this book describes how the actor’s stage presentation affects the actor’s representational role and the ways in which viewers experience Shakespearean tragedy.Michael Mooney draws on the work of East German critic Robert Weimann and his concept of figurenposition-the correlation between an actor’s stage location and the speech, action, and stylization associated with that position-to understand the actor/stage location relationship in Shakespeare’s plays. In his examination of the original staging of Shakespeare’s tragedies, Mooney looks at the traditional interplay between a downstage “place” and upstage “location” to describe the difference between non-illusionistic action (often staged near the audience) and the illusionistic, localized action that characterizes mimetic art.The innovative and insightful approach of Shakespeare’s Dramatic Transactions brings together the techniques of performance criticism and the traditional literary study of Shakespearean tragedy. In showing how the distinctions of stage location illuminate the interaction among language, representation, Mooney’s compelling argument enhances our understanding of Shakespeare and the theater.
Vico in the Tradition of Rhetoric

Vico in the Tradition of Rhetoric

If among the many truths of Giambattista Vico's New Science there is one that is deepest, it is the truth that language, mind, and society are but three modes of a common reality. In Vico's term, that reality is the monde civile, the world of man. It is a world of many guises and faces. If reflected in a mirror, those faces would reveal an image of the full array of contemporary arts and sciences, all the disciplines of learning and technique by which, so Vico judged, humanity attains its perfection. Humanity in its perfection, however, is so rare a moment, so delicate and subtle a state, that it is never to be found among the nations of the world -- or is found in so fragile a form that it threatens always to crack and fall to the ground. In the West, a persistent line of thinking that has flourished from time to time holds that language is primary in culture, metaphor a necessity, and jurisprudence our highest achievement. This was the position of Vico, who not only received and cherished the tradition, but looked deeply into it, saw what its principles implied, and so made ready for the great social theorists of the nineteenth century. That is the thesis of this work. After an introductory chapter on Vico himself -- in which his intellectual world and his movements within it are sketched -- the work unfolds in three parts. These parts successively treat rhetoric, pedagogy, and culture, each proceeding from a major Vichian text.

There has never been a time when America needs a move of God more than now. When a nation is attacked from without, the people unite and rally to preserve what is theirs together. But when the nation is fractured from within, family and friends find themselves forced to choose sides. Unfortunately, both sides lose. America appears to be headed to a cultural civil war like none other, and it will be a war that She cannot win. As in years past, the only hope for this country is a divine intervention from God. It is not the minds of Americans that need to be changed. It is the heart and soul of the Nation that needs to be rescued. Then She can be saved from self-destruction. Her only future is in Her redemption and salvation.Make America Saved Again, explores the condition of the Church in America and the spiritual condition of the nation during the challenges of 2020 and the years to come. So far, the responses of both the Church and the Nation to these social battle lines, have demonstrated the need for the American Christian community to rediscover Her mission. May She find the grace to stand and face Her future.

The American architectural firm of Sparano + Mooney in Salt Lake City, Utah and Los Angeles, CA, stands for sustainable and innovative buildings that are harmoniously embedded in spectacular mountain landscapes. In this volume, architectural critic Michael Webb presents ten projects with the aid of photographs, drawings, sketches and texts, visualizing the process by which architectural ideas are conceived and realized. The architects respond in their plans to the overwhelming natural surroundings with restrained forms and the innovative detailing of materials. The firm's models, sketches, conceptual drafts and fully executed buildings offer thoughtful perspective on developing architecture that thrives on the relationship between concept and place. Accompanying essays relate the buildings to their regional contexts and also highlight analogies to Land Art.

`I would encourage undergraduates students to read it, for it does summarise well a classical Marxist analysis of social policy and welfare' - Social Policy The anti-capitalist movement is increasingly challenging the global hegemony of neo-liberalism. The arguments against the neo-liberal agenda are clearly articulated in Rethinking Welfare. The authors highlight the growing inequalities and decimation of state welfare, and use Marxist approaches to contemporary social policy to provide a defence of the welfare state. Divided into three main sections, the first part of this volume looks at the growth of inequality, and social and environmental degradation. Part Two centres on the authors' argument for the relevance of core Marxists concepts in aiding our understanding of social policy. This section includes Marxist approaches to a range of welfare issues, and their implications for studying welfare regimes and practices. Issues covered include: · Class and class struggle · Opression · Alienation and the family The last part of the book explores the question of globalization and the consequences of international neo-liberalism on indebted countries as well as the neo-liberal agenda of the Conservative and New Labour governments in Britain. The authors conclude with the prospect of an alternative welfare future which may form part of the challenge against global neo-liberalism.

"It tackles - head-on - an important and pressing subject. It's about how we safeguard young people, how we grow up, how we interact with others, how we see ourselves." KARL FRENCH, Literary ReviewerWhy Punish Me? is a meticulous exploration, initially from a child's-eye viewpoint, of the shadow cast by St Augustine's fourth century teaching. The author served as altar boy and chorister while attending church boarding schools in Ireland and England, where he faced abuse. Here he recalls his daily drilling in self-censure and remorse, the penitential prayers still practised in many British schools.Having a sensitive nature is a positive attribute; it is what makes us human. But imaginative and impressionable children are susceptible to corrosive feelings of guilt and shame. These feelings are sharpened by the ritual avowals of self-blame decreed by Augustine, the bedrock of Christian belief in the Western Church.Following Augustine's doctrine on penance, the Church of England service admits sin and begs forgiveness or mercy twenty-four times. Grace and love are said twice. In faith schools today, infants are told to recite similarly mortifying prayers, often by a cleric. Schools do not set out to sexualise pupils, but an authority figure causing a child to feel guilt and shame is a known child sexual grooming technique. In 2020 the UK Independent Inquiry into Child Sexual Abuse reported that clerical abuse is far from a historical problem. Over 100 new cases are recorded every year. Yet nothing in literature explains this deviance credibly. The possible influence of Augustinian drill and doctrine on the sexual abuse of children and the callous neglect found in Ireland's mother and baby homes, is explored in depth here.Britain is a mainly secular society, yet most adults born in here were taught Augustine's ideas, by law. His ancient hair-shirt texts shape our lives-our schools, our politics, and darkly, how we relate to ourselves and each other. In school we learn values at odds with modern notions of decency and fair play. We are taught to say sorry and cravenly beg mercy and forgiveness for wrongful actions, without regard or reference to the wronged victim. According to polls, most of us reject religion later in life, but billions of neural connections made in our infant brains are not then freed. Augustine's shameful ideas about sex and sin pervade or culture, normalising negative thought patterns. The author reviews research papers endorsing religiosity and highlights a lack of rigour. Academics tend to shun religion as a field of study and in these pages we discover why. This thought-provoking book fills a gap in the shelf, opening a compelling new front in the current wave of popular religious critiques and revitalising the so-called;God Debate'. The lucid descriptions of faith school drill and doctrine will stir readers who suppose Christianity is a benign influence, to think again. The book has been favourably reviewed by prominent authors and critics.
