Introduction to Biblical Hebrew Syntax

Introduction to Biblical Hebrew Syntax

Bruce K. Waltke; Michael Patrick O'Connor

Eisenbrauns

sidottu
Meeting the need for a textbook for classroom use after first year Hebrew grammar, Waltke and O’Connor integrate the results of modern linguistic study of Hebrew and years of experience teaching the subject in this book. In addition to functioning as a teaching grammar, this work will also be widely used for reference and self-guided instruction in Hebrew beyond the first formal year. Extensive discussion and explanation of grammatical points help to sort out points blurred in introductory books. More than 3,500 Biblical Hebrew examples illustrate the points of grammar under discussion. Four indexes (Scripture, Authorities cited, Hebrew words, and Topics) provide ready access to the vast array of information found in the 40 chapters. Destined to become a classic work, this long-awaited book fills a major gap among modern publications on Biblical Hebrew.

It is the present day, the American military, in an extraordinary effort equivalent to the Manhattan Project and the Moon Landing, developed the ultimate military weapon, time travel. It is a weapon so dangerous and potent that it could change the course of nations. The work was based on the theories of one of Hitler's top scientists, Dr. Josef Hans Scheel. Hitler demanded that Scheel find a way to send a message back in time to avoid the mistakes of the war. Where they failed, America succeeded, and using modern technology improved Scheel's work to the point where now sending humans back in time was possible. Air Force Captain Jake Kelly and Navy Seal Rick Wilson are diverted from their current duties with orders to report to the Pentagon. Unknown to them, they have been selected to be the first test subjects of this new capability. Their mission, travel back to the closing days of World War II and confiscate details about the project that fell into the hands of the Russians after the war. Time is of the essence as it is believed the Russians used that documentation and are close to completing their time travel device. Much to their surprise, they learn that the mission is one-way. Traveling to the past is a reality, but returning to the future is impossible. The two are faced with the harsh reality that everyone and everything must be left behind. The trip across time is a story of triumph and tragedy, and of love and betrayal, as the two Americans land in World War II Germany, only to find that they are not the first to travel to the past. In a daring attempt to secure the secrets of Projekt T ten Zeit they battle the unforeseen consequences of tampering with history in an all-out effort to protect America's future and its past. As a bonus, this volume concludes with short story prequel to "Killing Time" titled "The Assassination of Franklin Delano Roosevelt."

A love letter to a community of Trappist monks who provided family when it was needed the most. This warmhearted memoir describes how a small, insecure boy with a vibrant imagination found an unlikely family in the company of monks at Holy Trinity Abbey, in the mountains of rural Latter-day Saint Utah. Struggling with his parents' recent divorce, Michael O'Brien discovered a community filled with warmth, humor, idiosyncrasies, and most of all, listening ears. Filled with anecdotes and delightful "behind the scenes" descriptions of his experiences living alongside the monks as they farmed, prayed, buried their dead, ate, and shared the joys of life, Monastery Mornings speaks to the value of spiritual fatherhood, the lasting impact of positive mentoring, and the stability that the spiritual life can offer to people of all ages and walks of life.

Patrick O'Brian's Bodies at Sea

Patrick O'Brian's Bodies at Sea

pokkari
An exploration of the complex roles that bodies--both literally and figuratively--play in the 21 volume Aubrey-Maturin series reveals much about the novels' many meditations on mind and body. Beginning with a consideration of genre norms and the bodies of the novels' main characters, the book's focus shifts to the ways the series offers interconnections between the human body and history. More literal considerations of the body examine O'Brian's depictions of drug use, particularly the opium addiction that afflicts Stephen Maturin, and human sexuality in its many guises. The work then focuses on Desolation Island, the fifth novel in the series, in light of the discussions above but also in terms of political and psychological tropes that draw upon the relationship of mind and body. Questions are examined about the relationship of reader to author, and what sustains such a long narrative and what continues to bring a reader back again and again.
Freight Flows and Spatial Aspects of the British Economy

Freight Flows and Spatial Aspects of the British Economy

Chisholm Michael; Patrick O'Sullivan

Cambridge University Press
2009
pokkari
Originally published in 1973, this book reports experiments in the modelling of freight flows in Great Britain, on the basis of 78 origin-destination zones covering the entire country. Its central purpose is to establish whether gravity model or linear programming approaches provide the most appropriate way of describing the existing spatial distribution of freight volumes and hence of predicting future flows, given possible allocations of population. Linear programming appears to be the msot useful way to approach freight modelling on this scale. The model outputs allow the authors to probe the problem of regional comparative advantage in terms of the volume of transport inputs. Although there is some association with the accessibility of regions, it is not true that the peripheral areas are at a serious disadvantage. Furthermore, evidence on the structure of transport costs indicates that movement costs are a surprisingly low proportion of total transport costs - thus further reducing the effects of location. The study concludes with a review of the lines along which work might proceed.

St Patrick's Park Place Liverpool. A Parish History 1821-2021
St Patrick's is the oldest of Liverpool's early post-Reformation Catholic churches to remain in use. Erected in the third decade of the nineteenth century, close to the city's expanding docks, and designed to seat 1,800 people, it has a fortress-like construction, which took six years to complete, the foundations and burial pits being cut into the solid sandstone bedrock. In 1816 a group of far-sighted laymen took out an unusual 5,000 year lease on the site. From the time of its opening in 1827, St. Patrick's has always been a hub of local community activity in the Toxteth area of Liverpool. The burial place of three of the ten 'martyr priests' who died during the 1847 typhus epidemic, the church in which Adolf Hitler's nephew was baptised, the parish of Jack Traynor, miraculously cured at Lourdes in 1923, the survivor of street riots, massive bombing between 1940 and 1942 and the earthquake of 1974, with close links to the Australian Archdiocese of Adelaide, proud to have had footballers such as Robbie Fowler and Ian Callaghan attend its school, and currently the subject of detailed investigations by the University of Liverpool Department of Archaeology, St Patrick's has a remarkable and unfolding story to tell as it approaches the start of its third century.

This book revisits the trajectory of one section of Patrick Leigh Fermor's famous excursion on foot from the Hook of Holland to Constantinople in the 1930s. The highly regarded British travel writer and heroic wartime Special Operations Executive officer walked into Hungary as a youth of 19 at Easter and left Transylvania in August 1934. This intrepid traveler, "a cross between Indiana Jones, James Bond and Graham Greene" as the New York Times obituary put it in 2011, published his experiences half a century later. Between the Woods and the Water, that covers the part of the epic foot journey from the middle Danube to the Iron Gates, has been a bestseller since it was first published in 1986. In the present volume Michael O'Sullivan reveals the identity of the interesting characters in the travelogue, interviewing several of them eyetoeye. The many counts and barons among his 1934 contacts are a proof of Leigh Fermor's lifelong attraction to the aristocracy. Rich with photos and other documents on places and persons both from the thirties and today, the book offers a compelling social and political history of the period and the area. It provides a particular portrait of Hungary and Transylvania when they were on the brink of momentous change.
