Farley was born in Charleston, SC, and has had the benefit of a twin brother. Their young family was constantly changing domiciles throughout their childhood. They were cycled and uprooted from South Carolina to Florida and eventually back to South Carolina. The most enjoyable period of their young childhood was the time that they lived in the Miami area. The twins had a wonderful subtropical world to explore and evolve in. Left to their own devices, the spirited boys were able to develop a world of vivid imagination and acquire lifelong survival skills. After moving back to South Carolina, they eventually became military cadets at Carlisle Military School in Bamberg and graduated from this high school with honors. The self-discipline acquired here and martial atmosphere instilled a sense of toughness and patriotism. Therefore, after graduation the brothers attempted to enlist into the U.S. Army. However, because the Vietnam War was raging and because they were just seventeen years old, the custodial-mother-parent would not give written approval. They consequently enlisted in the USAF and promptly volunteered for combat duty in Vietnam. A year later and after signing a waiver, due to more than one member of a family being in a combat zone, they were sent to Vietnam. They would go on to serve three tours of combat duty there. The profound experiences of this war left an indelible impression on both, as the atypical maturation process was expedited. With the military obligation over, both brothers went to college on the GI Bill and obtained degrees in engineering technology. Both continued in the military via the USAF Reserves and served during Operation Desert Storm, in the first Gulf War. Michael became a senior research analyst for a paper and chemical company. He retired from the military and his civilian job, moving to suburban Atlanta, Georgia, where he now resides. Having eventually lived on three different continents, he became interested in other world cultures and events. He now consumes voluminous daily information, travels, and enjoys the pleasures of therapeutic writing.

Michael R. Gottfredson and Travish Hirschi’s 1990 A General Theory of Crime is a classic text that helped reshape the discipline of criminology. It is also a testament to the powers of clear reasoning and interpretation. In critical thinking terms, reasoning is all about presenting a solid and persuasive case – and as many people instinctively understand, the most persuasive reasoning is that which bases itself on a single, simple hook. In Gottfredson and Hirschi’s case, this hook was what has come to be known as the “self-control theory of crime” – the idea that the tendency to commit crime is directly related to an individual’s level of self-control. While the dominant schools of thought of the time tended to focus on crime as the product of complex environmental factors, with little attempt to unify different theories, Gottfredson and Hirschi sought to interpret things so as to provide a single overarching concept that explained why crimes of all sorts were committed. Moreover, while other theories of crime concentrated on understanding and explaining specific types of law-breaking, the self-control model could, in Gottfredson and Hirschi’s view, be seen as the basis for understanding the root cause for all crime in all contexts. While such simplicity inevitably attracted as much criticism as agreement, subsequent studies have provided real-world corroboration for the General Theory’s persuasive reasoning.

Advances in Alzheimer’s disease (AD) research have been challenging and without major breakthroughs in understanding its pathological basis. The reigning hypothesis suggests AD is the result of extracellular amyloid deposition that seed to form amyloid plaques, which then grow and kill neighboring neurons. However, there are several inconsistencies with this hypothesis, not to mention the inability to show clinical benefit in several failed clinical trials by pharmaceuticals (i.e., from Pfizer, Eli Lilly, etc.), and it is in the field’s best interest to explore and test multiple hypotheses for pathology rather than drive the majority of research on this single amyloid theory. Reviewing many scientifically peer-reviewed publications, this book describes the "Inside-Out" hypothesis on how amyloid escapes the circulatory system through a dysfunctional blood-brain barrier to bind to the alpha 7 nicotinic acetylcholine receptor on pyramidal neurons. Over time, excessive amounts of amyloid appear to be internalized, resulting in neuron death and lysis. This simple mechanism readily explains plaque composition, size, shape, and location. Based on the current direction of research in the field, this hypothesis appears years from any research and development.
