This is an account of the promise and failure of the Peace Corps. With a critical eye toward making improvements, Michael Wald takes the reader on a journey through the highs and lows of working in the developing world. Here, he recounts how he worked around flaws in Peace Corps' system to achieve a project that helped thousands of people better their lives in Panama. For those considering volunteering abroad, this book offers true-to-life portrayals of development work rather than the overly flattering portrayal used to recruit volunteers. If future development professionals and volunteers take Wald's eye-opening observations to heart, they can start with an accurate view of what they are doing and tweak their efforts to better portray the United States in the eyes of the world. About the AuthorMotivated to improve the lives of others, Michael Wald became a lawyer and worked most of his career as a "people's lawyer," representing the ordinary person, not large corporate interests. He has also served on the board and as an officer of many civic organizations. Wald's time in Peace Corps was but one of his efforts to make the world a better placeWald loves travel and has lived in four different foreign destinations, in addition to his years in Panama. He has two fantastic children, three grandchildren, and a wonderful wife and life. He retired to Albuquerque to be near the mountains where he can find solitude, exercise, and admire the famous red-sky sunsets of New Mexico.

Budget deficits, gas prices, health care costs, social security, job security.... Anxiety over the economy pervades our daily lives—from reports on the early morning newscasts to gossip around the water cooler to dinner table debate. Yet most citizens are woefully ignorant when it comes to understanding how the economy works and how to interpret the impact of policies and business decisions. It's easy to slip into generalities: government spending is wasteful, taxes are too high, good-paying jobs are being shipped overseas, Americans don't save enough. Other issues become hijacked by political partisans to advance their agendas: trade must be fair!, tax cuts will pay for themselves!, there will be no money left in the social security till after the baby boomers loot it! In Smart Economics, Michael Walden provides an antidote: take 50 of today's top economic issues and explain their meaning, implications, and potential solutions in a logical, straightforward, commonsense, and non-partisan way. Has Government Spending Been Out of Control? Is Profit Bad? Walden applies basic economic concepts and logical argumentation to help readers get their bearings—to separate fact from fiction and ultimately make better economic decisions themselves. The result is an entertaining and highly informative introduction to economic principles and their influence on our behavior. In Smart Economics, Michael Walden provides an antidote: take 50 of today's top economic issues and explain their meaning, implications, and potential solutions in a logical, straightforward, commonsense, and non-partisan way. From Has Government Spending Been out of Control? to Is Profit Bad? to Why Are Pro Sports Stars Paid So Much? Walden demystifies the dismal science, using basic concepts and logical argumentation to help readers get their bearings—to separate fact from fiction and ultimately make better decisions, when it comes to spending, investing, saving, and voting. The result is an entertaining and informative introduction to economic principles and their influence on our behavior.

The recent startling discovery that a single gene prevents the cells in the body from becoming tumours marked a dramatic turning point in cancer research. Taking readers into the labs where researchers have determined that cancers are caused either genetically or environmentally by destroying the new found gene, CURING CANCER brings to life the race to unlock cancer's genetic code. As well as documenting the search for a cure for cancer, Waldholz profiles many of the personalities that are shaping its course, scientists such as Bert Vogelstein, who first uncovered the tumour-suppressing gene; Mary-Claire King, whose research into breast cancer is fuelled by personal passion; and Mark Skolnick, whose team found two genes that may account for 10% of all breast cancers.

The Second Amendment: A Biography

The Second Amendment: A Biography

Michael Waldman

The life story of the most controversial, volatile, and misunderstood provision of the Bill of Rights and "a welcome re-injection of historical context into the present debate over the rightful role of guns in American culture" (Chicago Tribune). At a time of increasing gun violence in America, Waldman's book provoked a wide range of discussion. This book looks at history to provide some surprising, illuminating answers. The Amendment was written to calm public fear that the new national government would crush the state militias made up of all (white) adult men--who were required to own a gun to serve. Waldman recounts the raucous public debate that has surrounded the amendment from its inception to the present. As the country spread to the Western frontier, violence spread too. But through it all, gun control was abundant. In the twentieth century, with Prohibition and gangsterism, the first federal control laws were passed. In all four separate times the Supreme Court ruled against a constitutional right to own a gun. The present debate picked up in the 1970s--part of a backlash to the liberal 1960s and a resurgence of libertarianism. A newly radicalized NRA entered the campaign to oppose gun control and elevate the status of an obscure constitutional provision. In 2008, in a case that reached the Court after a focused drive by conservative lawyers, the US Supreme Court ruled for the first time that the Constitution protects an individual right to gun ownership. Famous for his theory of "originalism," Justice Antonin Scalia twisted it in this instance to base his argument on contemporary conditions. In The Second Amendment: A Biography, Michael Waldman shows that our view of the amendment is set, at each stage, not by a pristine constitutional text, but by the push and pull, the rough and tumble of political advocacy and public agitation.
Glory of Groveling: Apology - A Simple Path to More Freedom and Happiness
"Apology gives us the authority to determine our own future, free of the fear, resentment, and guilt we feel from broken relationships. It makes us people of our word, people who can be trusted, people who are ready for real love." In Glory of Groveling, authors Michael Waldman and Jason Feddy deliver a refreshingly honest, surprisingly practical, and often humorous guide to personal liberation through the art of apology and forgiveness. With their signature blend of insight and irreverence, they offer a six-and-a-half step program designed to help readers drop their pride, own their mistakes, and find emotional freedom. This is not your average self-help book. Waldman and Feddy take aim at the ego's favorite defense mechanisms--deflection, denial, blame--and replace them with simple, actionable tools to repair relationships and release resentment. Whether you're navigating a rocky marriage, tense work dynamic, or the silent guilt of past missteps, Glory of Groveling invites you to rethink strength, rediscover humility, and learn the surprising joy of making things right. With real-life stories, accessible exercises, and just the right amount of sass, this book is a must-read for anyone ready to trade defensiveness for connection and bitterness for peace.
The Supermajority: How the Supreme Court Divided America
A "terrific, if chilling, account" (The Guardian) of how the Supreme Court's new conservative supermajority is overturning decades of law and leading the country in a dangerous political direction. In The Supermajority, Michael Waldman explores the tumultuous 2021---2022 Supreme Court term. He draws deeply on history to examine other times the Court veered from the popular will, provoking controversy, and backlash. And he analyzes the most important new rulings and their implications for the law and for American society. Waldman asks: What can we do when the Supreme Court challenges the country? Over three days in June 2022, the conservative supermajority overturned the constitutional right to abortion, possibly opening the door to reconsider other major privacy rights, as Justice Clarence Thomas urged. The Court sharply limited the authority of the EPA, reducing the prospects for combatting climate change. It radically loosened curbs on guns amid an epidemic of mass shootings. It fully embraced legal theories such as "originalism" that will affect thousands of cases throughout the country. These major decisions--and the next wave to come--will have enormous ramifications for every American. It was the most turbulent term in memory--with the leak of the opinion overturning Roe v. Wade, the first Black woman justice sworn in, and the justices turning on each other in public, Waldman previews the 2022--2023 term and how the brewing fights over the Supreme Court and its role that already have begun to reshape politics. The Supermajority is "a call to action as much as it is a history of the Supreme Court " (Financial Times) at a time when the Court's dysfunction--and the demand for reform--are at the center of public debate.

A massive lake is home to several villages along the coastline. The villages benefit from fishing the waters and by logging the rare Molderian Tree from the islands that dot the lake. The wood from the Molderian Trees creates fabulous pieces of furniture and decor that the regional nobility desire. But logging the wood has its own challenges. The islands are inhabited by native primates that are very protective of their homes. They do not like interlopers and push them out. The primates have other secrets though, gold. Will the adventurers brave the waters and island to acquire the gold they seek? This double feature module consists of two stories that develop from the same beginning. Through skill checks during an interactive introduction, the story will flow into one of the two stories. Or the judge can choose which story to tell. Rough Waters begins on the lake as the adventurers are traveling to one of the islands on a logging expedition. With loggers, guards, and some gold seeking adventurers along, a storm picks up. Can the adventurers survive the storm, or will they find the secrets held below the surface? The Cave in the Tree begins on the lake as well. Once they make it to the island, the adventurers begin exploring the island in a "sandbox light" adventure. Eventually the adventurers find themselves entering a cave built into a tree. Within a dungeon of aggressive native primates; what else is hidden in this interesting cave? Rough Waters and The Cave in the Tree are two zero level funnels originating from the same village. These adventures are compatible with the Dungeon Crawl Classics Role Playing Game.

War and skirmishes happen all over the world. There are organizations that do not trust one another. There are groups that directly hate and are unable to tolerate each other. Those groups play the war. Behind those wars; behind the veil of society, another set of skirmishes happens. Those skirmishes are between groups that also do not trust one another, but they hide that from the world. Those groups are playing the game of spies. Operation Espionage: A Game of Spies is a tabletop role-playing game where the players take on the persona of a spy, a member of one of those groups behind the veil of society. The team of players can traverse the world as covertly or overtly as they wish to accomplish missions--how they create their story is up to them. The game is played using a Roll versus Roll mechanic system that keeps the luck of the game in the roll of the dice--there are no difficulty checks. Even the Spymaster will be surprised at what happens when playing the game of spies.
