Origins of Phobias and Anxiety Disorders

Origins of Phobias and Anxiety Disorders

The first title to be published in the "BRAT Series on Clinical Psychology", this book presents a critical analysis of the theories and empirical evidence to date regarding the origins of phobias and anxiety disorders, and the reasons why more women than men suffer from them. The book moves from a discussion of non-specific temperament to specific risk factors for each anxiety disorder, assuming a hierarchical aetiological model throughout. At each level of analysis, the issue of gender differences is addressed. For example, broad temperamental factors such as traits of negative affectivity and poor emotional regulation are reviewed in terms of their relevance to the group of disorders with which anxiety disorders tend to cluster, such as depression and substance abuse. Biological contributions are covered, along with early life experiences including parenting styles and expectations, and early stressors. The components of anxiety - hypervigilance, threat-laden belief systems and avoidant style - are presented as being common across the anxiety disorders and self-perpetuating. Types of ongoing life experiences that influence the development of one type of anxiety disorder over another are reviewed. Each anxiety disorder is then addressed in detail after considering general principles of fear acquisition and persistence.

Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy

In this revised edition of Cognitive amp ndash Behavioral Therapy, Michelle G. Craske provides vital updated coverage of the literature that explores the theory, history, therapy process, primary change mechanisms, and empirical basis of the approach, as well as likely future developments. This essential primer to cognitive behavioral therapy, amply illustrated with case examples featuring diverse clients, is perfect for graduate students studying theories of therapy and counseling as well as for seasoned practitioners interested in better understanding this approach. Cognitive amp ndash behavioral therapy (CBT) originated in the science and theory of classical and instrumental conditioning when cognitive principles were adopted following dissatisfaction with a strictly behavioral approach. CBT combines behavioral and cognitive interventions so that, on the behavioral level, practitioners can aim to decrease clients' maladaptive behaviors and increase adaptive ones, and, on the cognitive level, they can aim to modify clients' maladaptive thoughts, self-statements, or beliefs. A large number of variations on the original theory have developed over the decades, but all types of CBT are unified by their empirical foundation, reliance on the theory and science of behavior and cognition, and the centrality of problem-focused goals. In this edition, the author provides vital updated coverage of the literature that explores the therapy process, primary change mechanisms, and empirical basis of the approach, as well as likely future developments.

Specific phobia is the most commonly occurring anxiety disorder with approximately 12.5% of the general population reporting at least one specific phobia during their lives. People may fear heights, flying, spiders, blood, water, and any other number of circumscribed objects or situations. Research has shown the most effective treatment for these fears and phobias is an exposure-based, cognitive-behavioural program. Written by renowned researchers, this Therapist Guide provides you with all the information you need to help your clients ease their anxiety and conquer their fears. Whether they are afraid of dentists, dogs, or driving, you can teach your clients the necessary skills to overcome their phobia in as little as a few weeks. The strategies outlined in this book include exposure exercises and cognitive restructuring techniques. The corresponding Workbook includes blank forms and records for tracking progress and allows the client to extend the therapeutic experience outside of the office. Together, both books form a comprehensive package that has proven to be the most effective and successful treatment available for specific phobia.

Anhedonia is a risk factor for poor prognosis and suicidality, and yet treatments to date have been relatively ineffective for anhedonia. Based on advances in behavioral and neural science, Positive Affect Treatment was developed to specifically target areas of reward sensitivity that are believed to contribute to anhedonia. These include the anticipation and motivation for reward, the response to attainment of reward, and the learning of associations between actions and reward outcomes. Positive Affect Treatment for Depression and Anxiety: Therapist Guide is intended to be used by clinicians who are familiar with cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) generally and with clinical presentation of depression, anxiety and anhedonia. Results show that Positive Affect Treatment not only improves positive mood state but also decreases depression and anxiety. This guide will be an indispensable resource for all practitioners who wish to effectively and efficiently help individuals regain interest and enjoyment in their usual activities while improving their quality of life.
