Drawing on the authors’ more than six years of R&D in location-based information systems (LBIS) as well as their participation in defining the Java ME Location API 2.0, Location-Based Information Systems: Developing Real-Time Tracking Applications provides information and examples for creating real-time LBIS based on GPS-enabled cellular phones. Each chapter presents a general real-time tracking system example that can be easily adapted to target any application domain and that can incorporate other sensor data to make the system "participatory sensing" or "human-centric sensing."The book covers all of the components needed to develop an LBIS. It discusses cellular phone programming using the Java ME platform, positioning technologies, databases and spatial databases, communications, client- and server-side data processing, and real-time data visualization via Google Maps and Google Earth. Using freely available software, the authors include many code examples and detailed instructions for building your own system and setting up your entire development environment. Web ResourceA companion website at www.csee.usf.edu/~labrador/LBIS provides additional information and supporting material. It contains all of the software packages and applications used in the text as well as PowerPoint slides and laboratory examples.Although LBIS applications are still in the beginning stages, they have the potential to transform our daily lives, from warning us about possible health problems to monitoring pollution levels around us. Exploring this novel technology, Location-Based Information Systems describes the technical components needed to create location-based services with an emphasis on nonproprietary, freely available solutions that work across different technologies and platforms.

The eld of wireless sensor networks continues to evolve and grow in both practical and research domains. More and more wireless sensor networks are being used to gather information in real life applications. It is common to see how this technology is being applied in irrigation systems, intelligent buildings, bridges, security mec- nisms,militaryoperations,transportation-relatedapplications,etc.Atthesametime, new developments in hardware, software, and communication technologies are - panding these possibilities. As in any other technology, research brings new dev- opments and re nements and continuous improvements of current approaches that push the technology even further. Looking toward the future, the technology seems even more promising in two directions. First, a few years from now more powerful wireless sensor devices will be available, and wireless sensor networks will have applicability in an endless number of scenarios, as they will be able to handle traf c loads not possible today, make more computations, store more data, and live longer because of better energy sources. Second,a few years from now, the opposite scenario might also be possible. The availability of very constrained, nanotechnology-made wireless sensor devices will bring a whole new world of applications, as they will be able to operate in - vironments and places unimaginable today. These two scenarios, at the same time, will both bring new research challenges that are always welcome to researchers.

Learn How to Design and Implement HAR Systems The pervasiveness and range of capabilities of today’s mobile devices have enabled a wide spectrum of mobile applications that are transforming our daily lives, from smartphones equipped with GPS to integrated mobile sensors that acquire physiological data. Human Activity Recognition: Using Wearable Sensors and Smartphones focuses on the automatic identification of human activities from pervasive wearable sensors—a crucial component for health monitoring and also applicable to other areas, such as entertainment and tactical operations. Developed from the authors’ nearly four years of rigorous research in the field, the book covers the theory, fundamentals, and applications of human activity recognition (HAR). The authors examine how machine learning and pattern recognition tools help determine a user’s activity during a certain period of time. They propose two systems for performing HAR: Centinela, an offline server-oriented HAR system, and Vigilante, a completely mobile real-time activity recognition system. The book also provides a practical guide to the development of activity recognition applications in the Android framework.

Padre Miguel: A Memoir of My Catholic Missionary Experience in Bolivia Amidst Postcolonial Transformation of Church and State
In this wonderful book, Father Michael J. Gillgannon ("Padre Miguel") has shared wonderful stories about his work alongside the people of Bolivia and about his encounters with teachers, artists, theologians, and others. He has also recounted his experience both with the anti-democratic military dictatorship of General Banzer and with the democratic presidency of Evo Morales. (President Morales was elected as the first Native-American president ever of Bolivia, a country whose overwhelming majority is Native American and who in turn suffered for approximately 500 years under European and European-American domination.) In particular, Father Gillgannon's Parish of San Antonio de Padua in the Andes mountains comes alive with his description of colorful annual indigenous fiestas of life, community, and faith. The parish school grows, and its youth encourage him and his close colleague Maryknoll Sister Joan Mury to initiate an extraordinary campus ministry at the State university of La Paz. At age 79, Father Gillgannon returned to Kansas City. There, through engagement with Hispanic Ministry in the United States, he continued to raise ethical questions and to work for social change.

He wanted to be treated like a man, not a child.Every summer the men of the Chavez family go on a long and difficult sheep drive to the mountains. All the men, that is, except for Miguel. All year long, twelve-year-old Miguel tries to prove that he, too, is up to the challenge'that he, too, is up to the challenge'that he, too is ready to take the sheep into his beloved Sangre de Cristo Mountains. When his deeds go unnoticed, he prays to San Ysidro, the saint for farmers everywhere. And his prayer is answered . . . but with devastating consequences. When you act like and adult but get treated like a child, what else can you do but keep your wishes secret and pray that they'll come true. This is the story of a twelve-year-old Miguel Chavez, who yearns in his heart to go with the men of his family on a long and hard sheep drive to the Sangre de Cristo Mountains--until his prayer is finally answered, with a disturbing and dangerous exchange. A new way for Christians to think about sexuality Author Miguel De La Torre, a well-respected ethicist and professor known for his innovative readings of Christian doctrine, rejects both the liberal and conservative prejudices about sex. He instead develops an ethic that is liberative yet grounded soundly in the Bible; a sexuality that celebrates God’s gift of great sex by fostering intimacy, vulnerability and openness between loving partners. In A Lily Among the Thorns, De La Torre examines the Bible, current events, history and our culture-at-large to show how and why racism, sexism, and classism have distorted Christianity’s central teachings about sexuality. The author shows how the church’s traditionally negative attitudes toward sex in general—and toward women, people of color, and gays in particular—have made it difficult, if not impossible, to create a biblically based and just sexual ethic. But when the Bible is read from the viewpoint of those who have been marginalized in our society, preconceived notions about Christianity and sex get turned on their heads. Taking on hot-button topics such as pornography, homosexuality, prostitution, and celibacy, the author examines how “reading from the margins” provides a liberating approach to dealing with issues of sexuality.

All heroes who aspire to be a Solar Warrior can only accomplish such mission by challenging adversities, chaos and tyranny. In this third book of "The Solar Warrior" trilogy called "A New Hope", Miguel A. Fernandez provides the reader with the necessary keys to understand in detail and consequences the invisible tyrannical forces integrated within the planetary Techno-System, describing the subversive and destructive character of these forces with regard to the very development of this power structure and all those institutions, nations and individuals who are directed by its laws and internal determinisms. Miguel A. Fernandez exposes in "A New Hope" the irreversibility of the planetary collapse of the Techno-System, and that just as in the case of the collapse of all previous civilizations, new potentials and synthesis can become possible once again. These syntheses go hand in hand with the creation of new values adapted to new conditions, and the forging of a new Nobility enlightened by classical Warrior virtues. This is the New Hope. The aim of this Warrior Nobility shall be that of stoking the heroic fire of their hearts, in order to trigger the emergence of a new Solar Aristocracy, capable of serving as a destiny and symbol for humanity. Miguel A. Fernandez draws in this book upon the cultural heritage of the West as upon the work of "cultural heavyweights", such as Theodore Roszak, Joseph Needham, Lewis Mumford, Friedrich Nietzsche, Jacques Ellul, Max Weber, Marshall McLuhan, Julius Evola, and hundreds of other referenced authors. "The Solar Warrior" trilogy is composed of two other books: "Origins, Rise and Decline", and "The Eclipse". In addition to this book trilogy, Miguel A. Fernandez is also author of the free novel: "The Solar Doctrine".

This book is dedicated to analyzing and comparing the most important philosophical ethical traditions in order to see what values and principles they share in common, as well as the possibilities of reaching a agreement on universal ethical principles. We will also seek to harmonize ethical traditions based on the good and happiness with ethical traditions based on duty and moral norms, as well as show the current need to reach a global consensus on a broad core values through an interdisciplinary, intercultural and interreligious dialogue that will serve as a basis for an ethical education that promotes the achievement of the desired goal of world peace.

This book provides a detailed reconstruction of the process of formation of the modern concept of society as an objective entity from the 1820s onwards, thus helping to better understand the shaping of the modern world and the nature of the current crisis of modernity. The concept has exerted considerable influence over the last two centuries, during which time many people have conceived themselves and behave as members of a society, and social scientists have explained human subjectivities and conducts as social effects. For both groups, society exists as a very real phenomenon. Historical inquiry shows, however, that the modern concept of society is no more than a historically contingent way of imagining and making sense of the human world.
