When Tessa Blackstone moved in to 2 Gower Street, London, she was delighted to discover that a previous tenant had been Millicent Garrett Fawcett, the suffragist leader who dedicated her life to securing women’s right to vote. But Tessa could not find a recent biography of this impressive woman, as the historical narrative favoured the militant suffragettes over the suffragists, who campaigned within the law and disapproved of violence. Some years later, Tessa resolved to fix the omission herself and began to uncover Millicent’s life story. Growing up in a large family in Suffolk, Millicent and her sisters challenged Victorian views about the role of women in their pursuit of education, employment and enfranchisement. Getting married at twenty did not deter Millicent from becoming a writer and feminist campaigner. Her husband Henry Fawcett, a blind academic and Liberal politician, shared her views and encouraged her. She was devastated by his early death, but her grit and determination kept her going. Over many decades, she battled against indifference and prejudice and was successful in not only winning women the vote but also fighting for improvements in their educational opportunities and employment prospects. Brimming with charming anecdotes about Millicent’s life from cradle to grave, this is the definitive biography of an extraordinary activist and campaigner who changed Britain’s political landscape for ever.

Millicent Garrett Fawcett (1847–1929) was an influential writer on political and social matters, especially on topics such as female suffrage and women's education. She was one of the supporters of Newnham College, Cambridge, and was later offered the post of Mistress of Girton, but refused because of her commitment to women's suffrage. She was active as a Suffragist, and opposed the violence of the Suffragette movement. In 1918, women over thirty were given the vote, but this did not end Fawcett's struggle for equal rights, and full suffrage was not achieved until 1928. This work, published in 1920, looks back at the long campaign for women's suffrage, and concludes with an examination of what had actually been achieved in 1918. It supplements her 1911 work Women's Suffrage, a Short History of the Great MovementFor more information on this author, see http://orlando.cambridge.org/public/svPeople?person_id=fawcmi

"However benevolent men may be in their intentions, they cannot know what women want and what suits the necessities of women's lives as well as women know these things themselves."Fawcett was only 19 years old when she launched a petition for women's suffrage and 22 when she began her political career. An English politician, writer and feminist, Fawcett fought tirelessly to give women a right to vote and the chance to gain higher education.Although Fawcett made outstanding contributions to women's suffrage and was one founder of Newnham's College, Cambridge, one of the first English Universities for women, she is not as famous as one would expect. "What I Remember," corrects this. It is the story of an extraordinary feminist trailblazer whom history almost forgot, but whose impact is still felt today.Stories of extraordinary women are often ignored, but Fawcett's is one that can't be. Hers is a story of strength, resilience and the fervent pursuit of all that benefits women. And, there is no better time than now to read the amazing story of the woman who won citizenship for women.

First published in 1883, "Women and Representative Government" is an essay by Millicent Garrett Fawcett on the subject of women's social participation and representation in politics. The struggle for women's rights has been a long and hard-fought one, requiring the efforts of innumerable men and women throughout history. One of the most important battlefields in this fight has been that of law, which has acted as both oppressor and liberator of women. In this essay, Fawcett sets out the case for women's suffrage clearly and concisely forty years before women were finally given the vote in the U.K. Dame Millicent Garrett Fawcett GBE (1847-1929) was an English writer, political leader, and feminist icon most famous for her contributions to the women's suffrage movement. Concentrating on legislative change, she was the leader of the National Union of Women's Suffrage Societies between 1897 and 1919. As well as law, Fawcett also helped improve women's rights in Education, co-founding Newnham College, Cambridge, in 1871 and also governing Bedford College, London for a period. Her statue in London's Parliament Square represents the first of its kind dedicated to a women in that location. A powerful piece of history that will appeal to those with an interest in the history of women's rights. Notable works include: "Political Economy for Beginners" (1870), "Essays and Lectures on Social and Political Subjects" (1872), and "Electoral Disabilities of Women: A Lecture" (1872). Read & Co.
